Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Many phrases for defecating use the word "take". It makes no sense to me

It's not meant to mean taking a literal piece of shit. "A shit" in this context means the entire act. Take a break, take a shit, take piss, etc., refer to doing the act.

[–] invertedspear@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

Or in other words “shit” is a verb here being used a diminutive of the act which is the noun. Like when you take a run, or take a ride, take a walk, or take a hike.

We don't have to take any shit from you here.

Same here. I just abandon it instead of taking, giving or whatever it is that some people do.

Take ~= have ~= do

Take a break == have a break, but a break isn't a tangible thing, so this is shorthand for "do the actions required to constitute a break"

[–] null@lemmy.nullspace.lol 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I don't want to have a shit, either -- I'm trying to get rid of the dang thing!

Ich scheisse.

[–] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] IhaveCrabs111@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That part is usually already done by that point.

[–] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I dunno. Maybe it’s not called shit when it’s still inside you? Like a magma/lava situation?

[–] RattlerSix@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

One man's "leave a shit" is another man's "take a treasure"

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 3 points 3 days ago

100% original realization, way to think of it.

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 18 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Chinese people say pull a poop, and I think that's beautiful.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

I like ESL wording of "make poop/shit"

Oooo new debate: push vs pull

[–] Devadander@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

Reminds me of the ASL sign for it

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 13 points 4 days ago

"I'm going to take a shit."

"Well don't take any of mine! I'm saving those for later!"

[–] skeezix@lemmy.world 17 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Someone’s been listening to George Carlin.

[–] IhaveCrabs111@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Shit sequence engaged

[–] bampop@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Don't start no shit, won't be no shit

[–] benni@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (2 children)

So what do you think happens to all the shit you leave around? Someone's gotta take it.

[–] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Sure. But it's not you.

Wait... is... is it you?

[–] benni@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's irrelevant. But if someone leaves it, someone else will have to take it, is what I'm saying. Like in general.

[–] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That’s irrelevant.

Oh... Oh, no. Lol!!

[–] benni@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I don't know what kinds of allegations you're trying to insinuate here. This isn't about me anyway.

Not insinuating. I would never insinuate such things. I'm implying, maybe inferring, but certainly not insinuating.

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Shit as a verb, not a noun.

[–] TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 days ago

That's the bizarre thing about English. Maybe native English speakers don't really think about it, but as someone looking at this mess from the outside, I can tell you that it's really nice when verbs and nouns are distinct.

[–] actionjbone@sh.itjust.works 10 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Someone here has never cleaned out a litterbox.

I once told a version of this at a stand up open mic, it did very well.

[–] Caketaco@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago

Psssh. Beat it, chick. I’m taken.

spoilerTaken a shit.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You've never "taken a break" or "taken a time-out" or "taken a nap"?

It's not like "taking a X" is a foreign construct.

[–] lauha@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I take a break, a nap and a time out because Inwant those things for myself. I don't want shit.

I prefer the phrases "imma go shake a tit"

Hey im leaving a shit right now!

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'm going to have a shit. Which doesn't sound quite right either when you look at it that way.

[–] BlueEther@no.lastname.nz 4 points 5 days ago

At least in New Zealand that usage would not be that uncommon

[–] Codpiece@feddit.uk 5 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Sir, I believe you left this behind.

Under the restaurant table.

[–] 58008@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I gift a riverboat to the otter people in exchange for splashy kisses on my cheeks.

[–] bampop@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago
