One thing that has been an eye-opener about all of this is how much cowardice there is in the U.S.. It's easy to talk a big game about free speech and freedom of the press, but when push comes to shove, most buckle.

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

And this is why you never give these people what they want.

Imagine the shitshow if the FCC pulled ABC’s broadcasting license for hurting the administrations feelings. They should have played hard ball.

[–] RFKJrsBrainworm@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 weeks ago

The government can't stop ABC from broadcasting.. Especially if laws have no meaning....why would they care?

[–] tangeli@piefed.social 56 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Actually, that makes a lot of sense...

Given that Trump is the best president ever (I'm sure I have heard people say so), then anyone who opposes him is, ipso facto, an enemy of the state and should be treated as such.

The more I think about it, the more obvious it is. I mean, why even have another election?

[–] Widdershins@lemmy.world 32 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I'd like to go back to living in a country that isn't run by a moron who shits their britches.

I bet you if more of our corporate leaders demure to his craven demands that he'll just go away and be reasonable.

[–] lb_o@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago

Exactly, spineless fuckers can't stand their ground at all in the situation where it is known that if you ignore him - he can't do anything about it.

Fucking do it. When the only news feed people have access to is state sponsored Fox News and AI generated MAGA memes on Facebook maybe we'll get enough people waking up to make a difference.

[–] oneser@lemmy.zip 52 points 2 weeks ago

My brother in christ. They are pulling people from the streets. They are re-writing what schools have to teach. They are removing references to an inconvenient history (slavery). They are calling for civil uprising. They are denominating opposing political groups as terrorists.

If people haven't snapped out of it now, they definitely won't when only state sponsored news is on the air.

[–] Azal@pawb.social 36 points 2 weeks ago

Live in a right wing state....

They'll still call it the "Liberal media" any time it says ANYTHING against their world view. Fox is "liberal media" around here.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I am not 100% sure about that. I could see some growing quite bored with their options and maybe waking up. I can see some falling into The Algorithm and getting way, way radicalized into more Nazi stuff.

But yeah, if Taco even takes away the soma, it might be that some people get well and truly pissed. At him. And the Republicans and the conservatives that are destroying this country.

[–] laranis@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, admittedly it is probably wishful thinking on my part.

What a dumbfuck; doesn't realize everybody is against him.

[–] Nalivai@lemmy.world 37 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Just watch how 51% of voters will vote for him again, because the opposing party's candidate isn't a saint actually and might have some flaws.
Hahaha, who am I kidding, there will be no next free election, nobody will need to vote anymore.

Not everybody, apparently a lot of americans are ok with all this.
I mean, if they weren't ok with it there'd be a visibly decent amount of push back about it all. Yet all they've done is post memes, and went out and had a walkabout with some signs a few months ago.

[–] DarkAri@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

There are massive protests they just don't cover them on TV and YouTube.

[–] Soulg@ani.social 7 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

The people saying that shit want us to just shoot everyone while they don't have to face any of the potential consequences and are safe.

So, he basically read some ragebait on Facebook

The challenge is that workers in the States aren't sufficiently organized to weather a general strike (much less coordinate to start one). So how do we get sufficient mutual aid in place so that workers have the support they need to strike?

Thought people were being hyperbolic about trump packing the supreme court. This guy has wasted no time completely destroying any shred of legitimacy the supreme court has ever had. I kind of see this as a positive. Now people see that trusting the supreme court with interpreting the constitution is extremely dumb. If one president can pack the court with fascists what's the point in even having this system? Obviously our constitution was never meant to be beneath the supreme court. This is an extremely clear violation of the right to free speech and of a free press. Our 1st amendment, not even our 2nd one.

We can't pull licenses for death threats to homeless people, that provoked the murder of them, but we can for this? I don't know what the disconnect here is for people to not be terrified of this administration and the direction it is going, that they aren't becoming active in opposition. Oppose the politics, the businesses, the media, the communities and the people who support this. There will be no safe spaces from the violence of the state and it's allies. They must be disempowered before it gets to that point.

That's means voting in every election you are eligible to across all levels of government and for politicians who are clearly and absolutely opposed to this and are actively opposing it. That means taking actions that confirm the integrity of the democratic system and taking actions to make it known and work to make sure it is.

That means spending money only at businesses who are clearly and absolutely opposed to this are actively opposing it.

That means disengaging from media sources that provide content that supports this fascism, gives voice to those that do and that does not openly and actively impose it. They have crossed so many lines already that it should not even need to be said that it is already too far.

That means only engaging in communities that are clearly and absolutely opposed to this and are actively opposing it.

That means only maintaining relationships with people who are clearly and absolutely opposed to this and are actively opposing it.

Doing this looks different for everyone and only individuals can figure out the details of moving their life towards resisting the fascist takeover of the American civilization, it is not just the government, it is the entire civilization.

If I asked what you are doing in your daily life to better oppose this shit, and you have no answer, then you failing yourself, your country and the future generations that will have to suffer under the boot of dictatorship. You are not alone in this, there are allies all around you, but we all need to start walking the direction we know we need to go to find each other on the path.

The best time to start was yesterday, the second best time is today.

Classic government censorship. Just the threat qualifies. Kimmel and Colbert should be suing their networks and the Trump Administration for censorship and violating their 1st Amendment Rights.

Yep, that's a fascism.

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

Frankly, hardly any of them deserve broadcast rights anymore. They sold out decades ago and it will never be enough. We need ferocious, independent, professional journalists, not billionaire minions.
