Explanation: The term 'Banana Republic' comes, in part, from the CIA-backed overthrow of the democratically elected left-leaning (but anti-Communist) government of Jacobo Arbenz of Guatemala, wherein the United Fruit Company (later changing its name to Chiquita, as it's known in the modern day) lobbied the US government to overthrow the 'dangerous socialists' whose insistence on labor rights undermined their profitable exploitation of the country. This, combined with the concern of US allies in the region - mainly military dictators who feared that a nearby successful democratic state would undermine their own hold on power - resulted in the green light from two US presidents - Truman and Eisenhower - and the CIA's successful involvement in orchestrating a military coup and rolling back all those pesky workers' rights.
