Isn't stochastic terrorism—the idea that vilifying public rhetoric raises the expectation of a shooting—an argument against free speech?

I recall left-leaning media denouncing that argument. In the wake of the Charlie Kirk shooting, MSNBC fired Matthew Dowd over recalling that idea by characterizing Kirk as

one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions.

with the Daily Show joining its condemnation

I don’t know, man. The whole idea of free speech in America is you can say what you want and not expect to be shot. Can you be challenged? Sure. Can you get roasted online? Sometimes.

After Jimmy Kimmel Live! was restored, the Daily Show celebrated a free speech victory & criticized claims in the media that abusive, name-calling rhetoric promotes escalations to violence

We would definitely have a healthier political discourse if we weren't constantly calling each other fascists & communists & Nazis. But we are the only place in the world where this shit happens all the time, but we're not the only place in the world that name calls. So, what is this?

So, I thought the left were back on board with free speech.

But we aren't anti-white tho...

Glances at Kanye "I'm a nazi" West

We hate nazis of all colors.

Also its not radical, even the US Government prevents nazis from naturalizing, they ask this on naturalization, as well as questions like "have you ever persecuted or tried to persecute anyone for their race, religion, beliefs, national origin, etc...", MAGAts would not pass the naturalization process.

I prefer the original:

Imagine what kind of uproar there would be if Raiders of the Lost Ark were made today. It really is very insensitive to the feelings of Nazis

I think I remember a screenshot of some trumpette complaining that they "never noticed how full of woke leftist propaganda" that movie was. Or some other movie; according to them most movies of the past 50 years are radical leftist.

They should watch Blazing Saddles next

I'm pretty sure that one got hated by racists when it came out too? I mean I wasn't born yet, but that's what I heard.

I'm guessing Indiana Jones escaped them because the main character was white and they hadn't started identifying as nazis yet - WWII and the whole killing nazis thing was recent enough in memory. Nazis were still considered evil. Hell I'm pretty sure they were still considered evil 10, 11 years ago. But it started changing 9-10 years ago 🤔

In The Blues Brothers, the heroes drove a bunch of nazis into a river while declaring "I hate Illinois Nazis" and nobody batted an eye. In my youth, I thought that meant their ideology had been permanently placed in the realm of the pathetic joke. I never imagined they could crawl back out from underneath their rocks like they have.

[–] paperazzi@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

I wonder what changed 9-10 years ago 🤔

[–] bampop@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

Sure, they never noticed because back then it was normal to consider Nazis as the epitome of evil. If you're going to do a fun family movie where the hero kills a bunch of people, Nazis were fair game. It's a chilling sign of the times, that the right wing has come to the point where they can no longer frame Nazis as the bad guys.

I forgot who it was talking to Trump that said it. But when talking about "antifa" they mentioned the "organization" had roots going back 100 years to the "Weimar Republic of Germany"

Dude knowingly said the groups in Germany that fought back against the Nazis were the "bad guys".

You can't satirize this administration with memes anymore. Like, when Elon did the Nazi salute they at least tried to pretend it wasn't. Poorly but still. There was at least fake denial.

I'll try to find the clip I'm referring to.

Let's just all remember that the term terrorism is often used to simply label the other side as inherently evil. Or discredit an army that doesn't have a trillion dollar budget. Etc.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago

Ding ding ding.

The only difference between a terrorist and an attacker is the narrative.

[–] molten@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

Whole lot of fascists and racists calling people terrorists lately.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Those evil antifa terrorists!

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Terrorist violently attacking an innocent law abiding citizen that firmly supports the government and rule of law.

This is why law based morality always fails. If you're living in an imperialistic, violent nation, the laws are almost certainly gonna be immoral and anti-humanist in nature. I keep telling people they gotta stop with the moral relativity but they don't seem to listen!
