I don't think you can even buy a new car without a screen for the driver. Android Auto and Apple carplay do not run visually on your phone screen, they are a connection to a compatible built in screen or a stand alone for older cars that don't have them. Android Auto only allows certified apps to run on the second screen, like Maps or music subs.
I give it a day before someone gets YouTube videos playing in a widget.
Still pissed that doesn't work. Restrict it to parking mode if You want, but I should be able to use that screen when I'm on a ferry or just waiting for something
The only thing I use android auto for is Waze and they butchered that not that long ago with a redesign that makes all the icons you need much smaller and on the opposite corner of the screen

As long as humans have to be the ones to drive their vehicles, down with this distractive nonsense.
