Rules

  1. Be nice to each other. Being aggressive or inflammatory towards other users will get you banned. Name calling or obvious trolling falls under that. Hate cars, hate the system, but not people. While some drivers definitely deserve some hate, most of them didn't choose car-centric life out of free will.

  2. No bigotry or hate. Racism, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, homophobia, chauvinism, fat-shaming, body-shaming, stigmatization of people experiencing homeless or substance users, etc. are not tolerated. Don't use slurs. You can laugh at someone's fragile masculinity without associating it with their body. The correlation between car-culture and body weight is not an excuse for fat-shaming.

  3. Stay on-topic. Submissions should be on-topic to the externalities of car culture in urban development and communities globally. Posting about alternatives to cars and car culture is fine. Don't post literal car fucking.

  4. No traffic violence. Do not post depictions of traffic violence. NSFW or NSFL posts are not allowed. Gawking at crashes is not allowed. Be respectful to people who are a victim of traffic violence or otherwise traumatized by it. News articles about crashes and statistics about traffic violence are allowed. Glorifying traffic violence will get you banned.

  5. No reposts. Before sharing, check if your post isn't a repost. Reposts that add something new are fine. Reposts that are sharing content from somewhere else are fine too.

  6. No misinformation. Masks and vaccines save lives during a pandemic, climate change is real and anthropogenic - and denial of these and other established facts will get you banned. False or highly speculative titles will get your post deleted.

  7. No harassment. Posts that (may) cause harassment, dogpiling or brigading, intentionally or not, will be removed. Please do not post screenshots containing uncensored usernames. Actual harassment, dogpiling or brigading is a bannable offence.

Please report posts and comments that violate our rules.

We really should put a limit on car sizes.

[–] BruceTwarzen@kbin.social 53 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Make them have a commercial license and pay for commercial transporting or something.

In the US at least, you need a CDL if you drive a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight greater than 10,000 lbs (4536 kg). The 2022 GMC Hummer EV weighs a whopping 9,063 lbs (4111 kg) so that's probably the largest vehicle a regular person would be able to buy.

That only matters if you're "for hire". I'm not aware of a single state or province where you can't drive a 45 foot long tour bus RV towing a double car trailer on a regular license. You can legally b-train trailers in lots of places. Giant truck + huge trailer + cargo trailer full of quads and side by sides is totally kosher.

Edit: I can go buy a Ford F750 and drive it like a pickup truck if I want. The Hummer is not nearly the biggest vehicle a normal person can buy and drive

I drove a gigantic uhaul once that I was amazed I could with a normal licence.

[–] taladar@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 years ago

It is 3500kg in Germany for your regular driver's license (unless you got yours in the distant past) so that is probably one market that limits it a bit more here in the EU.

[–] ratman150@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'm 99% sure it's 26,000lbs at least for a straight truck non combination.

Those tires must be expensive.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 8 points 2 years ago

Tax by weight, easy peasy

[–] AeonFelis@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

Or - hear me out - have pollution regulations that become more and more lax the bigger the vehicle is.

There is one, but it's outrageous. RVs like to push that limit.

Didn't the people of Paris vote in favour for charging triple car parking chargers for SUV's? I'd like to see this more.

SUV sales have been crazy the last few years in the UK (I assume the rest of the EU too given every manufacturer starting making many different models of SUV's). They stopped making people carriers in favour for SUV's :(

[–] ECB@feddit.de 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They did, but sadly only for non-residents.

[–] Swarfega@lemm.ee 4 points 2 years ago

That's a shame. Still, it's a start.

Does anyone else find it crazy how absolutely lazy people got? When i go shopping in a lidl, it has pretty good parking, the furthest spot is maybe 50m away. But there are always a few lazy asses who park right next to the entrance where there is no parking, the handicapped spot or the ev charging spot (without being disabled or owning a ev. Even worse in an underground parking where i sometimes go. These fuckers rather wait and block the lane to park as close as possible, while half the parking on the other side is empty, and the spot is quite literally 3 car lengths away, you don't have to wait to get in and you are closer to the exit where you also don't have to wait. Biggest pea brains park there i swear.

[–] MxM111@kbin.social 15 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I think people always were this lazy, but they were more considered to others.

[–] starchylemming@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

the extreme laziness deteriorates their bodies over time. legs so fat it hurts to walk. ofc they park close.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

The funniest are the multi layer parking structures. I was parking on downtown under a large mall and people were blocking the way to wait for a "close parking spot" on B1. Head down to B3 and it's completely empty with spots right next to an elevator.

Like, that's not even lazy at that point, it's just dumb.

12 yards long, 2 lanes wide, 65 tons of American pride! Canyonero! Canyonero!

I long so badly for a time where I can walk or train anywhere I need to go, and be rid of these monstrosities.

[–] bloopernova@programming.dev 7 points 2 years ago

Don't give them ideas!

That squirrel's nicked someone's help sign!

[–] lemmyreader@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 years ago

SUVs are a new plague :(

[–] vuldovahkiin@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

That's a huge squirrel. Of course I'll support degrowth wtf.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 6 points 2 years ago

Makes me think of those old cartoons where the filthy rich always had looooooooooooooong limousines

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 5 points 2 years ago

The 6000 SUX. Because bigger is better.

[–] TheDarkestShark@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I heard the next gen EV Wagoneer is gonna be over 10,000 lbs, the battery alone is almost 3,000.

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Idk, it'll be close, but the ice version is only 6000lbs.

[–] pingveno@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

Oh good, for a second I thought I was going to hear more about degrowing the economy to save the environment or whatnot. Yes, this degrowth I can get behind.

[–] PineRune@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The only huge vehicles I'm really seeing now are all trucks, not SUVs.

[–] BruceTwarzen@kbin.social 6 points 2 years ago

Where i live suv's absolutely exploded. We only have really small parking spots or tight underground parking, seeing all these vig ass cars down there is pretty funny.
