It's Thanksgiving in the US. I was expecting it to be like any other year where the treaty to not talk politics would hold. But those who voted for He Who Shall Not Be Named have been consuming social media about how their families are turning on them and disinviting them from holidays. They have already indicated they will be stirring up drama despite being seated at the family dinner they were invited to. I have enlisted the help of three others to bluntly interject with an unrelated, apolitical icebreaker question when things start veering. We have about a dozen written down on cards so far, would welcome ideas on others.
Casual Conversation
Share a story, ask a question, or start a conversation about (almost) anything you desire. Maybe you'll make some friends in the process.
RULES (updated 01/22/25)
- Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
- Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
- Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
- Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
- No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
- Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.

Ask for opinions on the Game of Thrones series finale
How did it go?
The worst was conversation on Musk and Ramaswamy's DOGE thing. Jesus, it's cringe. The acronym is DOGE, get it? Like the cryptocurrency? Oof.
There was no full on confrontation, but if they have any sense they walked away knowing the whole family thinks they are childish and cowardly.
Oh I get the DOGE thing. So stupid and childish.
Sucks. My partner and I had a nasty fight Saturday night and haven’t talked or made up. And I’m not sure he wants to. Been together three years. I haven’t told my kid. She will be devastated.
Ah I'm so sorry!
I've been awake for 30 minutes and am already on social media so not great
Yeah but is Lemmy “bad” social media? Please say no. 🙏
Yes of course it is. it works in the same biological mechanisms as other social media. it can have a negative impact on your mind whether or not the people using it are communist catgirls or tiktok dancers.
I just had a similar conversation with an aspiring game dev who wanted to learn more about tech/gaming addiction. the benevolence of the creator can help, but ultimately the problem comes from the behavior itself (and the underlying desires).
Very positively. Just my spouse and I, no guests, no plans for the holiday. Those are the best plans in my opinion.
Got called a piece of shit by my mother and step mother because I didn't want to bring my newborn to "my" birthday party at a bar 1.5 hours away where people drink and smoke during sick season. They said the most hurtful things they could even think of to me but I guess I'm just supposed to forget about it. I was still going to attend but just leave my baby at home with my wife. The party is actually for a little girl that they kind of adopted but they lumped me in since our birthdays are close. My mom likes to go to that bar because it's 30 seconds away from their house and she likes to get blackout drunk and gamble on the slot machines. She also usually tries to hit me in the face when she's drunk. It's great.
I'm still going. I feel really bad for the little girl they have and I'm trying to be the better person. I'm just so sick of it.
Sorry to trauma dump. I don't really have friends
Oh that’s awful. How did it go?
Doing great! I hit 50 followers on one of the sites I'm on and couldn't resist doodling up my slobbering biblically accurate angel character Goodie to celebrate! 😃
