thought you guys would find this blog post from Brian Leiter today funny. he's a pretty good guy and a respected scholar so no shade on him, clearly just misinformed. i wonder if this is in some way downstream of the recent political drama around proton.

My email is firstname.lastname@protonmail.com so it's not exactly anonymous.

Edit: My real email obviously has my actual name on it.

That's just an example. My real email has my actual name on it.

Yeah mine too, but am not going to put my full name here. The joke was mine is almost the same, but we have different names (I guess) so they are completely different. But now I want firstnamelastname@protonmail.com. By the way, did you know your email works without the dot too? Or when you add multiple dots? You can also add +sitename before the @ so you can see who sold your data. So, first.name.last.n.a.m.e+lemmy@protonmail.com works just as well as firstname.lastname@protonmail.com and firstnamelastname+lemmy@proton.me

Edit: firstnamelastname@proton is already in use :'(

So it's your fault they had to add a period between firstname and lastname!

Now it's a race to get a good number like firstnamelastname69 or 112358.

The period is optional. Not using it or placing a period somewhere else and it still works. Also a +whatever before the @ works too. Easy to see who sold your data. Firstnamelastname+facebook@proton.me and every spam you get with the +facebook in the address is from data Facebook sold.

Edit: yeah, whatever happens, it is always my fault. Remember that.

That seems about as anonymous as they come.

Naturally I don't include my real name in the example.

You aren’t filling me Mr. last name

You're gonna make him pull out? Lame.

I think its funny that he considers GMail "anonymous".

Dude probably uses AOL.

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 months ago

I think you may be missing his real point: he’s asking people to stop sending anonymous non-attributed emails, as he deletes those.

I do the same; it’s not a proton/gmail/etc. thing, it’s a “did you say who you are in the mail” thing. He then points out that most of these anonymous messages are coming from protonmail/gmail accounts.

He’s essentially saying he doesn’t want anonymous tips/feedback. Nothing to do with the delivery service.

What's this recent political drama?

[–] TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

One of the board members has been posting very pro-Trump nonsense.

[–] femtech@midwest.social 1 points 5 months ago

Damn, well maybe I won't get a subscription now. I was migrating everything off Microsoft.

emails

If you can't spell it, you're not an expert. And probably shouldn't be in Education as a provider.
