We kind of expected that he would at least put up a tiny bit of resistance before betraying his own coutry and decades old allies, if nothing else then just for show. I mean, we didn't even have to bring the kompromat up.

Well, it's definitely more correct to say that the US were perceived to be the good guys. Like cowboys that shoot native Americans in movies. Or cops.
