I think Le Guins "The Dispossessed" belongs here. Its a dystopian/ utopian comparative about an anarchist planet and a capitalist planet. Highly recommend. I've got a signed copy somewhere.

My NAS just arrived today. I'll have ~42 TB of self hosted storage for 1k.

Honestly, with my raised beds, between compost, seeds and fertilizer I probably lose money compared to buying tomatoes from the store. Home grown garden tomatoes are 10x better quality than grocery store tomatoes.

Yeah I guess that might work. it's just the effort part and the self selection issue.

I've got some scripts I put together for doing network analysis of yiutube. I'll have to look into some of these programs and see if I could extend them into a personalized content recommendation system. Someday when I finish all my other projects (😂)

What I mean by discovery is the finding of new and interesting content. For example, via YouTube it does track my viewing and it gives me some novelty via playlists. There are also channels that find new music and aggregate it.

I'm always in the hunt for novelty in media and a concern ive had and have experienced with mine own Lemmy instance is that of discovery, or finding new content.

Basically a big part I like about digital music is that I find stuff I never would have known about. If I'm going self hosted, it seems like this would get very much more limited.

Hey,

I'm trying to set up my own lemmy instance but I think I'm doing something wrong or don't understand federation. I'm using the elest.io automated lemmy build, and I think the site is up and working. I have admin and all that.

But I'm not federated? Or I cant tell if I am?

I expected to be able to connect to other sites in the fediverse and to be able to allow them to connect to me. I'm not sure thats working and I'm not sure if I need to change something in the setup of the lemmy instance or if this is something I would do from the admin console.

Would any experienced lemmings be willing to help me through this

Hi.

I'm using the elest.io automated lemmy thing to start my a WSB specific node. I can't find a specific guide to the federation aspect. Is there an instruction set for how to federate/ get federated?

Is this something I can do from the admin console?

This seems like something really obvious that I'm just missing.

I like lemmings but it might be a bit derogatory. Even with that I still think it's better than 'redditors', which always sounded/looked goofy to me.

It would be an interesting shot across the bow to corporate controlled social media to show opensource, open access social medias growth. I'm sure its in an exponential phase. It also would seem important to the community to know. Is there a way to query across the fediverse to look at user numbers?

Volcanic Activity Summary:

Kīlauea volcano is erupting. At approximately 4:44 a.m. HST on June 7, 2023, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory detected glow in Kīlauea summit webcam images indicating that an eruption has commenced within Halemaʻumaʻu crater in Kīlauea’s summit caldera, within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is elevating Kīlauea’s volcano alert level from WATCH to WARNING and its aviation color code from ORANGE to RED as this eruption and associated hazards are evaluated.  

The opening phases of eruptions are dynamic. Webcam imagery shows fissures at the base of Halemaʻumaʻu crater generating lava flows on the surface of the crater floor. The activity is confined to Halemaʻumaʻu and the hazards will be reassessed as the eruption progresses.

HVO will continue to monitor this activity closely and report any significant changes in future notices.

HVO is in constant communication with Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park as this situation evolves. The activity is confined entirely within the park.
