Seriously, though - what has been happening since 2020? I know it can get WAY worse, but so far we’ve had a pandemic, high inflation, crazy rent, crazy house prices, stagnant wages. Is this not already hardship not seen in generations?

It’s a cycle to move the window on acceptable discourse. This is at least the third time Grok has been configured to say something outrageous: holocaust denial, white genocide, now Mechahitler. When people react with outrage, they dial it back a little (but not all the way back). Repeat.

Trump does the same thing: go too far, backtrack partially, go even further, backtrack partially. Each time, the transgression is a little less shocking.

Grok is working as intended.

Yeah. Grok is working as intended.

I work in a bilingual workplace that offers language training to everyone. My colleagues are dedicated professionals and take learning seriously. However, some succeed more than others. There seems to be a lot of variation in language learning ability, even among smart hard-working people. Don’t feel bad if you’re struggling.

My advice is to focus your effort on the hard parts. If producing accurate sounds (phonemes) is difficult, try recording yourself and repeating the tough ones.

For reading, you might have a mismatch between the level of the material and your current ability. When i was beginning to learn my second language, i started with young adult books. Next easiest is a book that has been translated into the language you’re learning, preferably from your native language. Sometimes i would buy the same book in both languages and compare. Reading on your phone is also nice because you can usually click a word to see the definition.

For speaking, the best thing to do is talk, talk, talk. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and don’t always talk to the same person.

Good luck! Don’t get discouraged! I’ve been learning my second language for 42 years and i am still getting better.

I kept my home phone number and went with magic jack for very little money. That way, I only have to carry my phone when I'm out. Even then, I don't always bring it with me or I switch it to focus mode. I'm not a paramedic and I'm never armed so I expect for a real emergency, my friends and family would probably call 911 instead of me.

Agreed. People were angry - many with good cause. Unfortunately, people often make bad decisions when they are angry.

I am sorry, but you are incorrect. The word politics comes from polity, meaning a group of people who share an identity. When you say that politics is "power plays and public relations," you are repeating propaganda that was designed to disenfranchise people. Politics is about working on a shared project: building a good society. Bad actors have infiltrated politics, but they don't get to replace the basic meaning of the word.

I have a dream that one day my writing will not be judged by the frequency of my em dashes, but by the quality of my ideas.

For me, it would take some of the sting out of the break-up.

I would think to myself, "damn, how did I not realize that I was dating a lazy moron?"

I think you mean that it is weird that inclusion is controversial.

To me, inclusion is the foundation of politics. It is the uniting idea that people with no blood relation - strangers - can come together to build something that benefits all.

Trump and his gang want to move on from politics. They despise democracy and disdain a system that benefits anyone who isn't part of their exclusive circle. And for the record, their circle does not include Trump supporters - the maga-hat wearing rubes are just the tools that Trump is using to monopolize wealth and power for his immediate friends and family.

When Trump has achieved what he wants, there will be no more politics in the USA. There will only be the Great Leader and those who exist to serve him.

Well said. I don't remember the exact headline, but I skimmed an article that said recent graduates are having trouble getting jobs because many entry-level tasks are being automated. This will be a huge problem in a few years because entry-level jobs are the training for upper level jobs. LLMs are not cut out for work that takes careful analysis and communication, and they are useless for tasks where accuracy matters. How do managers propose that we fill those jobs if they won't train entry-level employees?

My wife suggested we pay by e-transfer and make the security question too hard for Trump to answer. For example: what is Melania’s birthday? What is Eric’s middle name?
