The current hostile corporate takeover in the USA and the clear loss of political power of the common people, I started wondering what happened if people used consumption as their leverage. Since the system is designed for continuous growth, what would happen if a mass movement of people stopping buying new non-essential consumer goods?

It would send a much stronger message than angry public protests. Thoughts?

I was on another thread and got deep into learning about the history of certain words and thought I'd post here. What word history origins / facts do you know?

I'll start with two that I recently came across:

• "‘Wer’ (meaning ‘man’) came from Old High German with the Anglo Saxons 1,500 years ago, and was part of Old English. It then became ‘were’ in Middle English and remains as part of werewolf (‘man wolf’) in modern English." (Source: BillTongg@lemmy.world)

Why do they think it will suddenly work this time? I feel like exhibiting a little more creativity might make it more effective, but I'd like to hear what others have to say.

My understanding of federation is that it's like email. If one server is misbehaving, then they get defederated.

So how come email spam still exists - why don't spammer domains get defederated? It seems like we've got the worst of both worlds, where it's hard to get your emails relayed when you run a small email server, and easy to get them relayed if you're a spammer.

Is there anything about Lemmy's architecture that will prevent this problem?

I don't want to single anyone out, but whenever I browse Lemmy for new communities I feel like it's not uncommon to find ones that only have 0-2 posts in them from months (or even as much as 2 years) ago.

I get why it happens: every time Reddit or some other platform does some crazy anti-user shit there's a big flood of interest in Lemmy and the Fediverse again, and with it a rush of people making communities (often trying to quickly clone popular subreddits).

But it seems that after some time they either get bored or disappointed that they weren't able to grow things as fast as they wanted, and then they just take off, leaving nothing but a ghost community behind--nobody posting anything and effectively unmoderated from what I can tell. That's my experience at least.

Of course, people can always create entirely new servers with an entirely new set of communities. But it feels like a shame that there are so many effectively dead communities on otherwise popular servers due to the fact that the people who created them never put any work in and just up 'n' left.

Seems to me that it's mostly revenge; dismantling any government agency that has ever thwarted him, or that the right wing does not like. But, I certainly don't trust his motives...

Anyone know if it is possible to browse Facebook Marketplace without a login account to Facebook? Are there sites that mirror Marketplace? I don't need to buy or sell, just want to browse what is out there.

I know for many people the main condition is that their work wouldn't be cool with it so would lose income or threaten job. in union strikes, a huge part of our dues goes towards a strike fund to make sure people get income when striking so i think i would like to see some crowd funding general strike fund or some sort of union type thing but anyone in working class can join & point of it is to organize and fund assistance, legal help, anti-retaliation.

I'd be down to general strike though, some massive positive changes in history have been via general striking since wealthy class freaks out.

As a home-cook and foodie I love taking inspiration from as many cultures as I can when I cook. One of my personal goals is to make at least 1 dish from every country and every major city around the world, and I've been compiling a list of my favorite dishes from each country to research and create versions of my own. I have tried and created many dishes from well-known countries, but I would love to know more about the culture and cuisine of places that are less talked about or less well represented.

So what are your favorite dishes and cuisines from your local city or country? Or local dishes you know of from other places? Or maybe you have your own list of your favorites?

My addition: Garbage Plates from Rochester NY. They sound strange at first but have become one of my comfort foods. When they are done well, they hit the spot like no other. As for a lesser known dish I absolutely love Roti Canai which is a type of curry and bread from Malaysia.

I'll go. I'm still proud of every American who has held in there through these 8 years and not given up on turning things around. We know what it is to live free and despite all the obstacles ahead there is still places that you can experience it.

So I felt clerks was like the movie that captured the Xer feel and I was seeing a discussion of superbad and I sorta wonder if that might be the millenial one and american graffiti seems to be talked about in terms of boomers and maybe rebel without a cause for silent and maybe grapes of wrath for the greatest generation. Im grasping here. with the lost generation you have the dawn of movies but I was thinking the jazz singer. Im really not sure with Z and my guess for millenials seems a bit early but they have started making generational ranges under the 20 year standard in span I think under the auspices that things just change faster now. Theoretically Z would be coming out about now or in the last few years. What are folks opinions. Yes and I realize generations are artificial buckets so I would appreciate comments being kept to what you think the movies might be if your game to go through the hypethetical.

I've been using YouTube since forever, and it's the only corporate social media platform (beside Discord) that I still use. However, I would like to explore PeerTube, does anyone have some recommendations for good PeerTube channels and other tips and tricks for PeerTube itself?

An example for me - the story of Luz Long and Jesse Owens' friendship forged during the 1936 Berlin Games attended by Hitler.

Jesse Owens did not fit the Nazi ideology of the superiority of the Aryan “master race” because of his color. Hitler refused to personally congratulate Jesse after his wins, and neither did US President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Jesse had fouled twice while attempting to qualify for the long jump event. He had only one attempt left. Luz shared a technique with Jesse that helped him to qualify on his last jump. In the finals of the long jump competition Jesse jumped 8.06 meters to win; Luz finished second with a jump of 7.87 meters. Luz was the first to congratulate him. After the award ceremony (see photo at the top of this story), Jesse and Luz walked arm in arm through the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

Jesse and Luz became friends at the Olympics and corresponded for years after that. Jesse would say of his Olympic friendship with Luz, “It took a lot of courage for him to befriend me in front of Hitler… You can melt down all the medals and cups I have and they wouldn’t be a plating for the twenty-four karat friendship that I felt for Luz Long at that moment.”

Care to share your own?

Title is question, but to clarify my assumptions:

• Vaccination is a numbers game, and the odds are in your favor that the vaccination will protect you over you get a side effect or an allergic reaction/shock
• An infection like covid/flue can damage your body long term, not even speaking of long covid etc.
• To the best of my knowledge it has been shown that flue shoots lower the risk of dementia later in life, wouldn't it be a good enough guess that a covid shoot decreases risks for this too
• Even if we only assume a covid vaccination is highly to reduce your sick days for only this year, isn't it a rationale tradeoff to get vaccinated, just to avoid 1-2 weeks sick?
• Given the security of covid vaccinations, I feel like they have been scrutinized and tested extremely well and to the best of my knowledge it was checked that nothing of the vaccination remains in the body after a few weeks (for the argument that nobody knows the long term effects of RNA vaccination)

Again my question: Why doesn't the WHO or don't most countries recommend covid vaccinations for everyone? Are there any health/medical reasons? Are there financial reasons? Are there any countries/governments which recommend the covid vaccination for everyone and not only the 'vulnerable groups'?

Edit: Just to add, I am living in Germany and right now we have a big wave of children flue, where children even die in the hospitals and the children hospitals are near their limits. It seems common sense to just put flue/covid vaccination into every child/adult, to avoid situations like this.

For those of us who live in the US things are and have been scary and depressing for a while, this seems to also be true about quite a few more countries in the world.
