What’s your main language?

[–] markstos@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago (3 children)

I used Tandem to find patient and compatible language partners. They are adults working on learning my language while I learn theirs. So we take turns failing and being patient and kind with each other.

We use texting and translation apps as needed.

That’s what I have enjoyed. For example, I wanted a learn a little Catalan, so I made cards to learn enough to have a 5 minute conversation about topics we were both interested in.

Because the cards were personalized, it helped me to stay motivated.

I was scared to move the cloud for this reason. I was used to running to the server room and the KVM if things went south. If that was frozen, usually unplugging the server physically from the switch would get it calm down.

Now Amazon supports a direct console interface like KVM and you can virtually unplug virtual servers from their virtual servers too.

I started to DBAN (wipe) my internal drive once instead of an attached drive. That was the last time I ran DBAN on a machine with any drives of value plugged in.

I was once paid in bitcoin. It was like 1 bitcoin worth about $20. There was nothing to spend it on. I lost track of it. Now that coin would be worth about $100,000. Crazy.

Yes. I used to use Knoppix. It was cutting edge for the time. Similar in concept to immutable distros today that allow you have some mutable data storage.

This program may save the city money from dealing with fewer fires caused by shoddy batteries and wiring.

I had a friend who was an old country doctor who lost his everyday-carry tracheotomy knife that way.

For that matter, Xorg didn’t handle this either, DEs or WMs did.

What’s an example of a place with conflicting names in different countries that handled differently?

  4. Password manager prompts for master password and redirects back to social login

Keyboards with custom firmware supports keycodes like XF86Copy and XF86Paste. These are great for having truly global copy/paste shortcuts that also work in apps like terminals where "Control-V" and "Control-C" aren't supported by default.

I advocated that these keycodes be supported in a web browser, Qutebrowser. The author of that project, Florian Bruhin liked the idea and submitted a patch upstream to the QT framework, which is used by many apps associated with the KDE Linux desktop. And about 5 years later, apps will be packaged with QT 6.10 that include the fix.

Here’s the change description.

This adds support for the Help, Open, Close, Save, New, Cut, Copy, Paste, Undo, Redo, Back, Forward, Refresh, ZoomIn, ZoomOut, Find, Settings, Exit, and Cancel keys to the default keyboard shortcuts.

The bug report:

It is reportedly plug-n-play for basic features, but for more advanced features, something like this project would need to be patched to add support for the camera.

If you have been using an ergonomic mechanical keyboard for more than year, let us know which keyboard it is, and whether you plan to keep to keep using it for at least another year or if there's another keyboard you are considering trying instead.

I have a Logitech C920 and am looking to upgrade. Something suitable for streaming.

Some annoyances with the Logitech: sometimes autofocus fails and poor reproduction of blacks. Ex: Lack of detail when a black cat is on screen.

I already have a nice mic-- the webcam doesn't need one.
