If doing an overlay network (network on top of the Internet), you probably won't be able to do much better than Tor or i2p.

We confirm the trilemma that an AC [anonymous communication] protocol can only achieve two out of the following three properties: strong anonymity (i.e., anonymity up to a negligible chance), low bandwidth overhead, and low latency overhead.

https://freedom.cs.purdue.edu/projects/trilemma.html

This applies to all types of anonymous networks as well (BT, Wifi, etc).

I think it's close to 1/3 of the US states now.

I think the far-right "manosphere" influencers are a good indication at what it does to mental health. Fascism, and extremist groups in general, seem to thrive on men not getting laid. IDK what the cause of this is though; I suppose more digital, less IRL social entertainment. They drink and do less drugs, which could be a reason too (especially drinking).

Edit: This is a self-reported statistic too. It may just be men are more comfortable reporting that their virgins instead of lying.

It's a tax that proportionally taxes the poor more than the wealthy, and it's not a coincidence that it's happening the same time taxes on the rich are being lowered.

Tariffs could make sense if we had a big manufacturing unemployment problem, but we currently do not. And targeted tariffs can help keep strategic industries in the country, but the 15% tariffs aren't targeted. Some countries are just better at making certain things, whether it's because of the resources they have, or the particular skills their workforce have, so trade, generally, makes sense.

The stupid "trade imbalance" thing Trump goes on about doesn't even take into account all the services US companies sell them (tech, financial, etc), and nothing is being done to stop US companies from offshoring these service jobs (some of these service jobs do have high unemployment and are being heavily offshored right now). Nevermind that trade imbalances means we're receiving more stuff than we're sending them, which is more beneficial to us.

I dunno why you want to keep resources/goods in their country of origin. Only Central and South America can enjoy coffee I guess?

If your beans aren't native to your area, I guess they're bringing balance to your ecosystem.

Big butts. I mean the ones featured in "Baby Got Back" were ok. But, today, some people are going crazy with it.

A lot of convenience stores around me don't even have any prices shown on many items. Drives me crazy, but I guess many people are used to it? Sales tax is usually around 7% in most places I've been to, so if I know the price of an item, I know, roughly, what to expect.

The Dems will not be able to repeal the tariffs if they only control the House. It currently looks very unlikely they'll control the Senate, and it's just a coin toss right now if they'll even control the house (will probably turn unlikely after Texas redistricts).

I can't stand Wolfe for some reason and I've never seen any type of rigor from him. I read his "Democracy at Work" book, and he came up with the term "worker self-directed enterprises," and kinda presented it as a novel concept when they were pretty much just another name for worker cooperatives. I've always liked Krugman's articles/blog because he does get a little "wonkish" sometimes; I think he's considered "New Keynesian" or something like that. Varoufakis and Reich are cool. Oh, there's a youtuber I recently found, "Garys Economics," which is pretty good (though he's an ex-finance guy, not an economist).

Trump, Bukele, Milei, Orban, Thiel, Musk, etc. It's the "Dark Enlightenment" and "Network State" type of fascists that want to replace democratic government with stuff like corporate-controlled city-states, and crazy shit like that. They see it as a means to starve the government so they can run their own corporation-like governments.

The message in the genesis block alludes to the ideology (as that kind of stuff was a major talking point for right-wingers back then), though I guess it's not definitive proof. The early community was definitely Austrian-school adjacent right-wingers though.

Fiscally irresponsible

I mean, there are people who just don't have the money for a needed "purchase" (like medical care, transportation, or food), and hope they'll be able to get a better job or make more money in the future to pay it off later. Been there.

Lemmy is quite left-leaning, and the impetus behind creating Bitcoin was right-wing Austrian school economics. Now, it's being pushed by literal fascists.
