Lots of discussion points here, but let me address two or three in particular:

blatant Nazism hurts their legitimacy in the eyes of the public

Nope. No, it really doesn't. Trump was never a legitimate contender from his opponents' perspective (due to dirty foreign money) and his true believers would stand buy him as he ate a live baby on TV.

Take a look at some approval polls that show he still has significant support from Americans. (Likewise with Musk, likewise with DOGE.)

Second point: It doesn't matter. He doesn't NEED legitimacy or approval any more. He's in power, Musk is at his right hand, and the two of them are acting with complete impunity. Seriously, they should both be hauled off in chains and tried for treason, not to mention hate crimes and hundreds of less-sexy crimes. But they're not, and so it just doesn't fucking matter.

Thirdly, where did it come from? We're discovering now that the Christian hard-right has been carefully staging this for HALF A CENTURY! Since not long after Roe v. Wade, they have been laying the groundwork for what Project 2025 is carrying out right now: A ruthless coup backed by religious extremists and foreign opponents. The Heritage Foundation was founded in 1973. PNAC was founded in 1997. And there are more.

Fundamentally, Trump's first term was to see how much they could get away with. When they lost the 2020 election, the Nazis spent four years purging the party of unfaithful (i.e. people with either thoughts or morals, or maybe even both), then won last year, and were finally able to remove their veil: The government no longer needs the will of the people to execute their extremist plans.

Yeah. Apparently they forgot to add "it's us we're the darkness" to their masthead.

A whole lot to protest, actually.

He ALLEGEDLY killed a man. Not been proven in court yet, and he is claiming that he's being framed.

Also even if it's true, terrorism charges are wildly inappropriate, and are being used here as a threat.

Then there's the matter of him being paraded around with a dozen armed guards, a clear violation of international law which guarantees the dignity of prisoners.

Finally, even if he deliberately murdered the CEO of a large healthcare provider, and deserves jail time, etc., there is still the fact that said CEO was complicit in the deaths of hundreds of patients that had claims denied, for the sake of endless profiteering.

So, yeah. Protest.

Piss off, spammer.

Hope some of you in the US will be protesting at the courtroom.

Nobody knows how they died, because they're dead.

Many people know how they're going to die, at least approximately. When you're 93 and have cancer, you know.

Wrong group.

I work with a number of developers who don't know how to find and edit a file on their computer.

Literally.

[–] swordgeek@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago

Yeah, good luck with that.

We don't want your "authority and influence" any more. The US has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they cannot be trusted with the power they've got.

Yes.

The amount of harm already done to your country by Trump and Musk is immeasurable, and will take a generation or more to recover from.

The amount of harm done to your standing in the world is equally bad. The world was skeptical after Trump's first term fucked over the rest of the world, but we were hopeful that maybe the US had learned their lesson?

Nope. They elected a fascist. They RE-elected a known fascist, felon, rapist, idiot-child, psychopath. Worse, they bolstered Musk to get into a seat of unauthorized and unimaginable power.

When Trump announced his idiotic tarrifs, Canada collectively said "that's it - we're divorcing." When he pulled back on the idea for 30 days, Canada said "don't care, still divorcing."

Trump is following the exact model of Hitler, and it's only a matter of time until he actually invades either Greenland or Canada if he's not stopped. The USA has to collapse into ruin and rebuild from scratch before anyone is going to trust them again.

Two others are Lone Star Texas Grill, and Baton Rouge Grillhouse & Bar.

Many people think of A&W as an American chain, but they have been separate companies for many decades. More to the point, they have been an actual Canadian company since 1995.

So I currently have an Asus RT-AC86U that is working fine, but bogging down under load, and also is EOL.

We've got three people and about 15 devices, give or take. Our internet service is currently 300Mb cable.

The AX88U Pro is currently on a very good sale - $220CDN. I figure my options are that, the BE86U at $370, or the BE88U at $500.

Five hundred bucks is out of my justifiable price range. Spending less (a lot!) on the AX router would be nice, but the longevity (and support lifespan) of the BE86 has some appeal too.

I'm also not married to Asus, although they've been consistently excellent for me.

What do y'all think? Any educated guesses on when Asus is going to EOL the AX lineup?

Anyone an expert in Synology here?

Synology's Hybrid Raid (SHR) is a funky little system, especially since it's built on standard Linux tools.

What I'm wondering though, is how data is distributed when you change the disks in the system.

Imagine I have 2x1TB drives and 2x4TB drives in a system.

  • First it creates a 4x1TB "chunk" which is essentially RAID5. (3TB available)
  • Next it creates a 2x3TB chunk which acts like RAID1 (although internally may be calculated like a RAID5 parity.) (3TB available from this)

Now let's say I replace those two 1TB drives with 4TBs (safely, preserving data, etc.), and tell SHR to expand to use the new drives. I can see a number of scenarios from this point:

  • It mirrors the two new blocks into another 3TB chunk, giving me 9TB total. (3 from RAID5, 3 from first mirror pair, 3 from second mirror pair)
  • It expands the 3TB mirror into a second RAID5 group, giving 12TB total. (3 initial plus 9 in the second group)
  • It does the same thing and also rewrites the data on the (former) 3TB mirror pair to be striped across all four disks
  • It expands the 3TB mirror to RAID5, *and merges it with the original 3TB RAID group, giving a single 12TB RAID5.
  • Again it does the same thing but with rewriting of the data that was formerly just mirrored.

This isn't likely to be a huge deal, but I'd like to know how it works under the covers.

OK, I had a hard time coming up with a single sentence title, so please bear with me.

Let's assume I have a computer with a perfect random number generator. I want to draw from a (electronic) deck of cards that have been shuffled. I can see two distinct algorithms to accomplish this:

  1. Fill a list with the 52 cards in random order, and then pull cards from the list in sequence. That is, defining the (random) sequence of cards before getting them. This is analogous to flipping over cards from a the top of a well-shuffled deck.

  2. Generate a random card from the set that hasn't been selected yet. In other words, you don't keep track of what card is going to come up next, you do a random select each time.

Programattically I can see advantages to both systems, but I'm wondering if there's any mathematical or statistical difference between them.

This game...

I love it. I love how true it is to the (Bethesda, et al) spirit of the Fallout series. I love the humour, the clever touches, the obvious love with which it was crafted.

But holy fuck, the bugs. The bugs, the bugs, the fucking quest-breaking BUGS!!!

Also, the "FO4 too easy? We're going to make this incomprehensible" attitude.

Let's consider companions. First companion was Churchill, followed shortly by Archie then Arthur. I was travelling with Arthur when I finished Archie's questline, and then shortly after, I finished Arthur's as well. Then Arthur swapped his massive gun for melee, so I dumped him.

Unfortunately, I couldn't re-join with Archie. After every interaction, he goes into an unclickable merchant menu, and you can't get him to join you no matter what.

Back to Arthur then. I sent him to Biggs Airport, and...he's not there! FUCK!

Kiera? As soon as I didn't sign on, she went to a location I can't yet reach!

Fine, I'll solo it. Except that the Roundels are stuck in the basement of the bar, which breaks THREE SEPARATE QUESTS!

We'll see if 1.02 fixes any of this shit, but I honestly can't play anymore. Everything - EVERYTHING - in the game is broken for me now.

So after a hard winter of riding, the preload adjuster snapped off on my old Dart 3 fork.

The plug itself is still usable to hold the spring in place, but there is now a clear opening for water, dirt, and whatnot to get into the spring side of my shocks.

They do well enough for the riding I do, so I'd just as soon not get new forks. If I could find a replacement adjuster I'd be a happy camper, but alas - Rockshox/SRAM doesn't have decade-old parts available that I can see.

Any other leads you good folks could offer?

This is killing me.

We have a snippet of code on a web page. Users copy the code to a text editor, make a small change, then copy the modified version and paste it into a terminal window.

And it fails to run.

I've confirmed this happens with both Textedit and Notes, and also that copying from the web page and pasting directly into a terminal works fine (although without the necessary code changes).

It's something in the text editor copy; and there's no way to either "copy as plaintext" or "paste without formatting" into a terminal.

Does anyone know how I can work around this?

EDIT Apparently some (but not all) spaces (octal 040) are being converted to octal "302 240". I can't figure out how to stop it!

So I recently picked up an arch-back ebony concert ukulele from Leho. It is a sweet little instrument for the price!

What I'm wondering is what sort of strings come on it from the factory. Odds are decent that they're "Aquila new nylgut" from all I've heard, but I'd like to know for sure so I can help choose where to go when I wear these out.

I've asked on their facebook page, but no answer so far.

I created this post on my local server, calling for what I thought was reasonable action against a self-proclaimed threat to Canada.

Someone in the community disagreed (fine), and reported the post on their hosting instance (lemmy.world), which led to an immediate deletion of the post (on that single instance only).

Think is, I really don't feel that it was warranted - and neither do most of the community members over on lemmy.ca.

I realize that instances are autonomous, but is there an appeal process to potentially have this reinstated?

Yesterday I created a post on a regional community on lemmy.ca.

Fairly quickly thereafter, I got a DM saying that the post had been removed because someone who disagreed with me complained. Oddly though, the DM came from a @Automod@lemmy.world - not the server hosting the community.

Furthermore, I still see the post when I go looking - and there has been a bit of discussion about it.

So my questions:

(a) Can a post be removed from a specific federated instance without being removed from the original instance? (b) Is there an appeal process for removed posts? I'm sorry that the guy got all butthurt, but my post was sincere, measured, and (I think) reasonable. If it offended someone, they should discuss it.

So when my mom moved, I inherited her 1960s MCM coffee table. The end pieces are veneered particle board.

Now the veneer is in good shape - no chunks missing, no big lifts or anything - but it’s rough and covered in tiny not-quite-bubbles.

I’d like to find some way of just smoothing it all down, and I expect it to look natural again, but I’m being cautious. Anyone dealt with this before?
