Previously: Submission Statement Edition

Haven't done these in a while, so let's get started.

  1. Since we haven't really heard any feedback one way or the other, rule 8 is now official. To be fair, we've had a lot less microblog posts than I expected (only one Twitter/X post in the last month even after I waited longer than the initial 1-2 weeks expected, and that was a crosspost.)
  • Again, the rules are always a work in progress, feel free to give your two cents here whenever you like.
  1. As you guys know, PipedLinkBot went completely insane 2 days ago and looks like it's temporarily shut down. So, I'd like to use this opportunity to explain why I banned the bot pretty much immediately after our community reopened. (And gloat a bit, of course)
  • Even though I do agree with the principle of using open source, privacy focused frontend instead of using Youtube directly, I have a real problem with using a bot to respond every time somebody posts a Youtube link. It feels like spam, and it doesn't feel like it serves any utility besides pushing an agenda (even though many people here would agree with it). Most people have seen it around here enough to use pipedvideo if they wanted it to use it already.

  • I think it's always been a rage inducing part of the reddit experience that you see you received a response to your comment, but only have it been a bot smugly correcting your grammar or tell you all your letters are in order or something useless like that. So, for this place, I would like to make sure that everyone you talk to here is a real person as much as possible, because people inspire people to be greater, but bots don't.

What ways are there to automate installation of a list of apps?

"adb install" can be used to install apks without rooting the phone.

fdroidcl can automate downloading apks from F-Droid.

Is there anything similar that can install a list of Play store apps / package names?

Is there any options for better bluetooth management than stock android (I'm on 14 currently, on a Motorola)? Android does a reasonable attempt at autoconnecting, showing me the last couple of devices and so on - but there's not a lot customisation or control.

I would like to be able to toggle easily whether devices autoconnect, I'd like to me able to have a list of 5 or 6 devices that I regularly connect to, rather than just the last three I've used. I'd like to be able to set priority for which device gets the audio out. Stuff like that!

Many androids ago there were apps that improved bluetooth management, but now they don't seem to exist. Or, at least all the ones I found in the app store seemed scammy af.

Any suggestions? Do I need to root? Or finally learn Tasker?

One of the biggest complaints leveled at Android Automotive has been a distinct lack of apps for the in-car OS....

I'm a web developer, mostly with Python and have close to zero Java or Kotlin experience, but I want to build a bunch of tools for my phone where I can Share a URL (for example) to an app that simply takes that URL string and sends an HTTP POST request to a pre-arranged URL with some pre-arranged headers or POST data.

So basically I'm looking for an app that:

  • Lets you define a series of endpoints
  • Accepts share intents from other apps to then bring up a selector asking "Which endpoint do you want to send this to?", sends it, and exits.

It seems a little nuts that I should have to develop a separate app for each endpoint, when the app experience isn't really something I'm interested in. Can someone here point me to an app that already does something like this? I'd prefer a FOSS option if possible, but at this point I don't even know what to search for.

Example use-cases:

  • Send a YouTube URL to a service that downloads said video and stores it on a share on my VPN
  • Send a text snippet to a service that stores that snippet as a Markdown file for use as ideas for future blog posts
  • Send an article URL to a service that strips the ads and images out and saves a Markdown file for future reading.

It seems kind of insane how hard it's been to find a good TTS app. I have TTS Util and that's worked sporadically but if I get it to start it will stop in the middle of reading. I can't even seem to find a basic app to let me paste in text and have it read.

Any recommendations? I'm mostly trying to have web articles read aloud and I don't care about robotic voices that much.
