All about dogs - dog breeds, dog training and behavior, news affecting dog owners or handlers, puppy pics, etc.

Rules (Will be refined later on).

  1. Don't be a dick. This should cover most things, just keep in mind that everyone started somewhere and try to be helpful rather than rude or judgmental.

  2. No personal attacks based on training style or tools.
Discussion of balanced training including proper use of aversives is allowed here.

  3. All breeds and mixes are welcome. You can criticize backyard breeding practices but don't pile on people because they own a specific breed or prefer purebreds or mixed breeds.

  4. Do not support backyard breeders or puppy mills. Please do not link to or suggest buying from high volume breeders or those with an obvious lack of standards and testing.

  5. Do not help or support fake service animals. Please do not encourage people to buy fake service dog vest or ESA letters to get around rental or other restrictions & do not give advice on how to misrepresent a dog as a service or support animal.

Also their tail, typically. It's pretty barbaric.

I'm not saying whether I approve of cropping the tail or not, as I have mixed opinions on that.

But have you ever seen a large dog carelessly wag it's huge long tail, smacking, knocking over, and damaging practically everything around?

There are reasons for some things like that.

No reason that I know of for cropping the ears though ☹️

Of course, owning a dog like that is a choice. One could just as well own a small dog that doesn't wreck everything. If you can't handle a big, high energy dog, then you probably shouldn't have one. Chopping its tail off is cruel and unnecessary.

You'll be delighted to know all major veterinary organizations oppose tail docking and ear cropping. No need to ride the fence anymore.

Then why do they crop cat's ears after they get fixed, whether the owner agrees or not?

Ear tripping a cat is typically only done to stray or feral cats to identify them as having been fixed and can be seen from a distance.

I have 4 house cats (2 male, 2 female) from shelters, all are fixed, and none of them have had their ears tipped.

Does ear-tipping hurt a cat?

Cat ear-tipping is extremely safe and is performed while the cat is already anesthetized for spay or neuter surgery. There is little or no bleeding involved, and it is not painful to the cat. The ear heals up quickly, and the tipped ear doesn’t detract one bit from the appearance or beauty of the cat.

My vet said the cats have a tattoo that is supposed to indicate they are spayed.

Never tried to look for it, was optional but no charge.

Ah, so we should also dock german Shepard tails then?

Ear cropping on dogs was originally for fighting, nowadays it's (usually) for the look
