The idea is to disrupt the visual (and possibly thermal) signature to make automated targeting less effective

Another article I saw said that they are there for 'protection'. Not sure how effective they would be.

This stems from the times when Ukraine used Drones to drop shells/grenades on the planes close to the contact line. The tires are for the planes are what the cope cages were for armored vehicles.
