Meh, I don't care much about them anyway.

Smell test is the way to go.

Does it smell okay? then it's okay.

I've seen rotten food before their expiration date, and also ate food that was 2 years past it's expiration date and it was fine

What about it you're shopping for food that comes in a sealed container, like milk?

You'll only find out it's off once you open it. Could probably return it at that point.
