I was driving and found myself craving some caffeinated soda. Since coca and Dr pepper are now off limits I just downed an espresso and got a (European) ice tea, but I'm wondering if there are actual alternatives

I've recently been enjoying Fritz-Kola, which is a german brand of cola. I was also super happy to learn that Red Bull is european!

We have quite some in the database already: https://buy-european.net/category/soft-drinks Feel free to suggest more - I will also keep an eye on this thread to make notes.

Any thing by Carls Berg, Squash, Faxe Kondi, Booster energy drink, jolly Cola ....that if you are in Denmark or Scandinavia in general

[–] lud@lemm.ee 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I wish Faxe Kondi was available in Sweden. It's really good.

[–] Shamber@lemm.ee 1 points 5 hours ago

I did not know that, maybe the boarder shops would be the place to get it from.

Thy Sport, Fatdane cola, Craft Soda by Tuxen Brewing, Hancock Sport cola, Frem Sport.

All of them Danish, I've tried some of them and can wholeheartedly recommend them.

Paulaner Spezi clears.

I am a hydro homie, but as someone who has a tendency to not eat enough, sometimes that sugar rush hits different

Irn-Bru, made by AG Barr. Scotland voted for Remain if memory serves.

[–] ThomasCrappersGhost@feddit.uk 2 points 22 hours ago

Yeah, it was a big part of their leaving the UK campaign.

I'm ok with UK stuff, they did some dumb stuff but nothing on the level of "elect Donald Trump twice" yet. Also Scotts get a free pass anyway because of our shared history of pissing off the ~~Brits~~ English (I'm french). That being said I have sadly never seen a can of irn bru in France

[–] Patch@feddit.uk 8 points 1 day ago

Scots are Brits, my Gaulish friend. It's the English whom you have a shared affinity for pissing off.

AG Barr also make Tizer, DnB, and a range of standard sodas (cola, lemonade, cream soda, etc.).

All your soft drink needs well catered for.

Rubicon too!

Almost every country has tons of domestic soda brands, though most of them are only available locally/regionally and some of them are probably USA-owned.

In Germany there's Fritz Cola, Afri-Cola, Sinalco, Mio-Mio, Club Mate, Bionade, Paulaner Spezi and many more.

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah in France we have tons of "regional" colas but outside of Brittany (Breizh cola) and Corsica (Corsica cola) you're not finding them in a gas station

[–] BastingChemina@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

Kofola is really popular in Czech republic and surrounding countries.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Gas stations are definitely difficult, many of them just don't have the shelf space for 5 different cola brands, and if you can only pick one it's hard to justify anything but coca cola from the perspective of the gas station owner ...

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I guess I'll just settle on gas station coffee with a lot of sugar. Probably better on my stomach than cola too, but that's a low bar to clear

Most european supermarket chains will have their own brand and they will most probably come from a local company. Lidl, auchan, carrefour...

Then we also have local brands. In italy there is sanpellegrino, san benedetto, ferrarelle, lemonsoda...

[–] boonhet@lemm.ee 7 points 1 day ago

San Pellegrino does taste good, but I don't feel particularly great buying it. Literally coca cola feels morally better than Nestlé.

Fentimans is good, too.

[–] florge@feddit.uk 1 points 1 day ago

Fevertree used to good, until they started using sweeteners.

[–] smeg@infosec.pub 7 points 1 day ago

Kofola in Czechia is good

To copy my comment from here https://lemm.ee/comment/18279577:

Austria has a quite big drinks economy for being a small-ish country. Now I havent tried each of these yet, but here are a few brands:

  • Keli is one of the most well-known lemonade/soda brands and has a Cola flavour drink
  • Frucade is a good german-austrian lemonade brand, but has no Cola drink
  • "Tirola Kola" from Tyrol
  • Pedacola from Upper Austria (weirdly enough not a black colour)
  • "Murelli Dracola" from Styria (yes, a Dracula pun since this region allegedly inspired the story)
  • "Strizzi Cola" from Salzburg
