2025 is the year of the X360. First the decomp tools, now this. Maybe we can even expect a serious attempt at emulating the system on PC? Xenia is still not good, unfortunately.

About xenia not being good... I know my experience is anecdotal and ofc xenia is not perfect but I played through Forza Horizon 1 and Red Dead Redemption with almost no issues. I'd say it's a bit better than "not good"

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

Probably meant in comparison to where ps3 emulation is currently. I agree, xenia has made amazing progress. For the "lol 360 go brrrrr" folks it has a long way to go still.

So it takes up to 15 minutes to apply (if successful) and has to be done every time you start your XBox 360. It's great that there's no hardware changes involved so even I could make changes, but at every boot?

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 17 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Reminds me of early 3DS hacking and CFWs. Don't worry, we'll get there eventually. The fact it can do this at all is a major step.

MVG says not likely since the bootloader would need an exploit as well... Which currently doesn't have a soft mod related exploit

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 2 points 8 hours ago

Now you reminded me of the 3ds homebrew scene. It was so fun. Its amazing how active it was as well. But now its at the point where you can homebrew one by scanning a qr code, no need to buy a specific game or special cartridge.

Doesn't the Xbox 360 have a sleep mode? Basically you'd only need to do it again if the power goes out.

[–] PotatoKat@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago

Nope sleep modes weren't a thing outside of handhelds until the next gen

That's the best news I could ever hear! I can finally mod a 360 :,)

I can't watch the video right now, but my interest is piqued.

Is "hacked" being used in the "uh oh" way or used in the "useful jailbreak to run homebrew software" kind of way?

Hopefully it's the latter since my OG Xbox's usefulness increased 1,000% after running the MechAssault save file hack to softmod it.

[–] deranger@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Jailbreak.

Important to note: this exploit is not persistent, meaning you’ll have to redo it anytime the console is shut down or crashes. The 360 doesn’t suspend, so unless you leave it on you’ll be doing the exploit a lot.

In addition it’s only successful 30% of the time, so you have to try the exploit multiple times each time the console boots.

Great progress though - hopefully it leads to something more permanent.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 8 points 1 day ago

Good to know. Yeah, definitely a great start.

The 360 doesn’t suspend, so unless you leave it on you’ll be doing the exploit a lot.

With its capacative power button and where I have it placed, my dogs are really really bad about hitting it with their noses and powering it on/off 😆

[–] lambda@programming.dev 2 points 1 day ago

I also didn't watch the video. I've watched two about this already though and it's not persistent between reboots. But, other than that, it's pretty useful. You can run homebrew to directly answer your question.

[–] Moose@moose.best 5 points 1 day ago

Hopefully they find a way to apply the fix permanently. I just did 2 RGH3 mods over the weekend which is the easiest hardware mod for the 360 and it was more challenging than I expected.

[–] Pirky@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'm gonna have to buy a 360 now to jailbreak and rip its games.
Been doing that for PS1-4, GC, Wii, Wii U, Switch, and OG Xbox. Now it's time for the 360 to join the ranks.

[–] Buelldozer@lemmy.today 3 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

You can already rip 360 games.

Using a PC you just need to make a .iso of the disk using whatever method or software you prefer.

You can also do it with an umodded 360 console.

The trick isn't ripping the games, it's playing them. That's what the hacks like RGH and now this software are for. There's also emulation like Xenia and XenonRecomp.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

They’re dirt cheap. $20-$40 USD

[–] neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My brothers might be in my parents basement still. I wonder if it even still works.

I have one of the OG white ones but never use it out of fear for the red ring, any shot this will help prevent that?

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 4 points 19 hours ago

Kind of not really

You can overclock the fans but you really would want to do a hardware fix

[–] Aquila@sh.itjust.works -4 points 18 hours ago

Anything can be hacked if you have physical access to it
