If there's one thing Japan loves, it is economical competition. There are like 40 different ways to pay at a shop, it's absurd.

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 15 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Wow, all of that and no crypto. That's impressive.

Japan is permanently in the '90s (and I love it).

[–] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 14 points 1 hour ago

I've seen the phrase "Japan has been stuck in the year 2000 since 1980"

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 30 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

That's not absurd, that's awesome

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 4 points 3 hours ago

It can be both!

[–] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 37 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

And yet everyone will pay with cash.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

This used to be the case 15 years ago, but unless you go to some tiny independently owned place, you can usually pay with credit card or suica. If not, then with one of those QR code payment options. I rarely carry cash anymore.

[–] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 1 points 1 hour ago

Idk, I wasn't there myself. My friend went there multiple times though (last time before corona) and he said cash was often/usually needed.

I can’t pay with interpretive dance?! I shall not be frequenting this establishment. Good day to you.

[–] SnortsGarlicPowder@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

There is a DDR cabinet in the arcade that will turn your Dance into Tickets which are accepted.

This is one of the most Japanese things I have ever heard.

Dōmo arigatōgozaimasu

That's hardly a bad thing unless you can't use the most common way (e.g. paying by credit/debit card) in shops.

[–] Toes@ani.social 1 points 5 hours ago

With that many options, it's your bad if the card doesn't work. Wow haha

[–] Sat@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 7 hours ago

If only that worked on dlsite

Does that mean I can get a 3rd party eShop on my Nintendo Switch? 😆

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 37 points 8 hours ago

Ha, that would be excellent. Don't forget Sony and PlayStation.

[–] Scrollone@feddit.it 12 points 7 hours ago

Haha yeah sure. That will never happen.

[–] mrbubblesort@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I wish, but this seems specifically aimed at smartphones only. However, this could open the door for Nintendo to make their own eshop for Android or Apple, and I suspect that's what the gov is going for because it would directly benefit Japanese companies at the expense of foreign ones.

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Why would Nintendo want a shop on Android and Apple? They don't own those platforms...

[–] theangryseal@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

They do make games for phones though. I haven’t heard of any in a while but I remember some dust being kicked up about Mario coming to smartphones about a decade ago.

I’m on my phone now actually. Let me look.

Yep.

Huh, I never knew. That's interesting!

[–] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 8 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Yes you can! And Nintendo will then sue your ass off :-D

Me: but I'm completely following the law!

Nintendo: Your point?
