When was cyberpunk controversial?

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 3 points 26 minutes ago

at launch, it was really buggy. people in Lemmy tend to hold one hell of a grudge for some reason

[–] frenchfryenjoyer@lemmings.world 9 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Good god I hope that tweet's fake cause if not, that person obviously doesn't proofread stuff lol. also Breaking Bad is one of the best shows ever and you should give it a watch

[–] DahGangalang@infosec.pub 6 points 4 hours ago

If I like the Anime version of it enough, I'll actually try Bb. I honestly never gave it a fair shot because of how controversial it was.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

CP77.

Its really not that hard to abbreviate Cyberpunk 2077.

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 hour ago

You're gonna get HOW MUCH CP?!?!

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Not sure that's any better.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

They made a sequel and kept going??

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 hour ago

Enough time progressed and it's just normal porn now.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 16 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Good thing is nowadays it's being referenced to as CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material), due to children are unable to give consent and some weirdos tried to whitewash it by calling the less outrageous stuff "child erotica" or "artistic nudes of children".🤮

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 10 points 9 hours ago

Those names aren't doing a very good job of whitewashing.

Lol I love that it's a harrier jet. Someone should edit this to be that missing Malaysian airliner

[–] secret300@lemmy.sdf.org 51 points 18 hours ago

I was expecting them to reply like "what's cyberpunk?"

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 43 points 18 hours ago

“And that’s how I met my FBI officer.”

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 65 points 20 hours ago (22 children)

Look there are two kinds of people with breaking bad.

Those who loved it, and those who haven't watched much or any of it.

My ex got me into it, and she's kind of.... Well, shes not brilliant. So I didn't take her recommendations too seriously most of the time (I really don't enjoy Teen Mom or 90 day fiance or 600lb life). But this? This show hooked me. It takes quite a few liberties with the sciency bits and lawyer bits, but it's fun even with a bit of knowledge cause it starts with something being "technically correct." It's well written more than anything.

[–] x4740N@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

I started watching breaking bad but got bored of it and dropped it

It's not healthy to force yourself to watch a TV show if you get bored of it even if it's popular

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 17 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

those who haven’t watched much

I mean... I think I know what you're trying to say, but this seems to imply that you think someone who doesn't like a show should just carry on watching it anyway

[–] Robust_Mirror@aussie.zone 4 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Sometimes that's true. Not all times. But many shows have a weak season 1 but then get amazing. And you can't really skip it without losing context.

[–] Crewman@sopuli.xyz 24 points 19 hours ago (5 children)

I finished up to season 4, wondering when it was supposed to get good. I know there's a lot of hype around it, but I guess it just wasn't for me.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 minutes ago

I am baffled by your opinion here, can I ask... what was another show, or season of a show that, in your opinion, did 'get good'?

[–] tatterdemalion@programming.dev 20 points 17 hours ago

You gave it a generous amount of your time. I'd say if you don't like it in the first few episodes it might not be for you. I was hooked almost immediately.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 7 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I made it like 3 episides of season 1 before I threw in the towel lol

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 8 points 14 hours ago

I got to the bathtub scene, said "wow that's amazing television" and stopped watching. I get it, he sucks and he's going to get worse.

Look there are two kinds of people with breaking bad.

Those who loved it, and those who haven't watched much or any of it.

And then there’s my wife, who hated Walter so much midway through she couldn’t watch it anymore.

That was my second watch so not a huge deal to me, but damn she could not stand him.

[–] Contentedness@lemmy.nz 19 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I've never managed to watch the whole series. There's great bits but I get super uncomfortable with Walters bumbling, flagrant dishonesty with his wife and family. I get the same thing with a few different shows and I just don't enjoy it. To the point where I find myself just switching the TV off mid way through a scene and going to do something else without even really thinking about it.

If I had to describe the sensation it would be "extreme toe-curling cringe".

[–] ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I have the same problem with stuff. Can you, um.. anti-suggest?

Like suggest things I should avoid that hit those same tropes that made bb unwatchable for me..?

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 9 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

My personal anti-suggestion is always the office. Too much cringe. I'll watch compilations of Jim pranking Dwight on YouTube, but I can't watch the show as a whole because of Michael.

[–] ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 12 hours ago

For sure, the cringe of the office is unbearable, and I have no idea who you named.. other than knowing they were in the show..? I tried so hard to try to like it that sucks so hard to have people all like “no but give it time!” …bitch.. I did give it time.. I even tried the UK version and it’s the exact same thing with different people.

Same with always sunny (sans UK version, I doubt that exists.. it wouldn’t translate..).. I can’t get past the first impression, the gang gets racist… like ok, this clearly has nothing for me..?

Maybe it does, but I’ll never honestly be able to get past the start to know (other than memes, I know many of those bits)

Is that tweet f a k e ?

I can only imagine the replies & reporting if it’s somehow real

[–] Mirodir@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 9 hours ago

Maybe that specific tweet was fake (or bait), but I do remember it from back then. There was a whole slew of easily misinterpreted posts on all social media around the release of the cyberpunk game and then again around the release of the anime.

[–] Gutek8134@lemmy.world 14 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Breaking Bad had too much family drama and slow pacing for my taste

[–] kameecoding@lemmy.world 20 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Imo, it being slow and very much deep diving into characters is what makes it phenomenal instead of just a shallow action flick.

It's also a rather litmus test for maturity imo.

I first watched it during University years, and I was very much of the camp that was doing the vicariously living through the power fantasy of Walt's rise to power and the bitch wife and crying jessie ruining it for him.

I recently, like a year ago as a 31+ year old rewatched it again, and jesus christ what a top to bottom egoistic selfish asshole Walt is, all I did is feel sorry for Skyler and Jessie.

I think knowing where it's going makes a big difference. Like, first time in going in blind Walt is a sympathetic for the first bit, and for most of the story is dealing with the unintended consequences of raising funds for his treatment. Knowing where it's going it's a lot easier to see him in a lot worse light earlier in the story.

[–] MotoAsh@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Nah man, Walt makes some egregiously selfish and egotistical calls even in season 1. For an obvious one, he turns down his old friend's money, money they say is effectively Walt's, just so he can rub his own ego even more. Then he goes on to use them as an excuse for where the money is coming from.

He robs his own school of supplies, too. There are many, many many selfish piece of shit things Walt does. From the start.

He also starts off being a judgemental piece of shit to Jessie even while he's trying to use him to do the same shit he's judging Jessie for.

Walt is purely a piece of shit that kind of sort of starts to redeem himself after he already created the whole mess to begin with.

[–] kameecoding@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago

Well yeah, that might be a factor, also that on a a second watch you can start picking up on things better, because it's much clearer from the get go that while his very initial intention to not leave his family behind poor, it really quickly becomes about his ego.

[–] Dicska@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

It's the adult Tom&Jerry.

[–] outhouseperilous@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

I found the characters very much basic-bitch white bread, but slow burn is like the entire reason it works at all

And it's very well executed.

[–] HappySkullsplitter@lemmy.world 18 points 20 hours ago (4 children)

Ew it touched Instagram, is it contagious?
