I'm just dumbfounded why anyone would be openly okay with video games becoming unplayable. He flat out said he was fine with it. And like... Why though?

[–] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 64 points 4 days ago (1 children)

He's creating his own game. It's like a corporation saying "workers unions are bad".

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 13 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I had read something about how he's faking work on the game, but admit I did not look into it.

[–] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 20 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Oh didn't know that. After looking into this guy I determined I better ignore him alltogether.

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 12 points 4 days ago

Exactly why I didn't look into it, lol.

Its not that complicated.

He's been saying he's been working on his game for uh... 7 years now.

When what he has actually, very obviously been doing, is twitch streaming 10 hours a day.

Its the 'Elon is magical multi tasking super genius' bit, no, no obviously not, he's lying, he just likes to be able to claim the identity of game dev because it allows him to act superior and authoritative as a commenter on video games.

Dude is a fraud.

[–] ragebutt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 4 days ago

He didn’t open with that statement, he buried it into his video. A bootlicking coward (or possibly an industry plant, given he got the blizzard job thanks to his dad) who bans dissent and won’t actually engage in any dialogues with the people he’s fucking over

Because technically it's a little extra work to make games playable after the end of life. It's so much easier to just dump it and run to the next thing. Like Game of Thrones season 8. But the extra work makes it a quality product. It gives it a legacy. Same reason it's a little extra work to add accessibility and pretty colors to my app. Sure my app would work without it but this shit should be an industry standard.

I think the worst thing about PirateSoftware is that he can have some surprisingly reasonable takes and nuggets of wisdom in his shorts that lure you in, but the moment you start getting into more of his content and actually try to figure out what he's about as a person you discover he's a smug asshole with an overdeveloped sense of self-righteousness. Some people never dig that deeply or simply don't care if he doesn't practice the mindfulness he preaches, these are his fans.

[–] bappity@lemmy.world 19 points 4 days ago (1 children)

if you watch his outer wilds playthrough you'll see him struggle on puzzles for half an hour, look down pretending to think, then suddenly have the exact solution to the puzzle.

dude has a serious case of ego

[–] lime@feddit.nu 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

i really dislike his playthrough because he skips so much. he approaches it like a pure puzzle game instead of a world.

he plays it like joseph anderson except he pretends he's doing things correctly and the game is wrong. joe knows he's wrong and challenges the game to stop him.

[–] RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

So my original assessment of him just being asmongold with enough self awareness to not act like a fool all the time was kind of correct?

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Asmongold without the rat alarm clock.

[–] ScoopMcPoops@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

If Asmongold wasn't puppeted by an army of roaches.

A vote for SKG is a Fuck You for Pirate Software.

Sign on that pettiness alone.

[–] Iron_Lynx@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

More than 564k signatures! That's about 100k in two days, just about! There is still a possibility!

If you can, sign it, please!

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 38 points 4 days ago (3 children)

What are you all expecting PirateSoftware to do? He has no mana. What can he do when he has no mana?

[–] ieatpwns@lemmy.world 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Meditate to regain mana, like you do in Ultima Online. 🤷‍♂️

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

Self-reflection is clearly not his strong suit

[–] Maalus@lemmy.world -1 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 3 days ago

I mean... It sure does now. But that's because EA ruined it.

[–] BlackPenguins@lemmy.world 30 points 4 days ago

He's a shill for the industry. It cuts into his bottom line. That's the only reason you wouldn't defend consumers.

[–] Buske@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Follow the money, He is paid for.

[–] blackjam_alex@lemmy.world 16 points 4 days ago

I hate his username because it makes it seem like it's about piracy versus legally owned games to people unaware of him scrolling through social media.

[–] Zikeji@programming.dev 14 points 4 days ago

If you've seen the controversy around this guy in other circles (I'm thinking of that satire game creator who got harassing by Pirate Software and his fans) this wouldn't really be a surprise and would be on brand.

[–] RandomStickman@fedia.io 12 points 4 days ago

The cheery on top of this shit sundae is truly him framing Ross as some bully sending his toxic fan base against him when Ross has given him more than enough grace and benefit of the doubt

[–] L0rdMathias@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Doesn't like the game he is eventually promising to finish require always online DRM? So ofc he wants to shut down something that would require him to long term support a product he's invested into but hasn't even brought to market. Super transparent conflict of interest.

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 days ago

In theory, if he actually finished and released his game relatively soon, he could do whatever he wants still.

One popular misconception about the SKG initiative is that it will require currently existing games to change to become compliant. That's not actually what they're asking for. They want new laws to come into place that would affect future games made. The SKG initiative fully accepts that there are some existing that are likely beyond saving.

[–] Voyajer@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

I'm not surprised, he's the director of strategy for the publisher offbrand games whose biggest game is live service after all.

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

I’m gonna guess this guy isn’t very effectual in the whole matter. Though I only learned of his existence in the last few days.

Has he met with lawmakers or made counter petitions or anything like that? Should we really fear him? Or are people just venting because the initiative is struggling to succeed?

[–] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

He became really popular in a short amount of time, and he did more damage to the public perception than anything. Wayyyy more people followed pirate software rather than the stop killing games movement, and he pretty much just shit on it to an audience who never heard of it before.

I'm not super knowledgeable about the details of SKG, but from my understanding you need to get a lot of signatures and public backing for the UK government to actually pay attention, and pirate software basically killed any and all momentum the movement had, right when it was getting started too.

[–] ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca 0 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Or are people just venting because the initiative is struggling to succeed

It's this one. He lives rent free in people's minds because he made a video 9 months ago that has 1 million views where he says he doesn't support it because it would cause undue burden on developers. Focusing on YouTuber drama is really taking away from the message of consumer rights.

[–] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

There's more to it than that. It's not because Thor was publicly against SKG, it's because he misrepresented the entire situation to his much larger audience. The reason there's a big focus on this now instead of 9 months ago is because Ross (the creator of SKG) specifically didn't want it to become "youtuber drama". The reason it's happening now is because the SKG movement is almost over and has been struggling, and Ross put out a video explaining how Pirate Software mislead his audience and actively turned public perception against SKG right when it was building momentum.

[–] ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago

And now it's YouTuber drama.
