Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

Since people for guns in the USA keep saying it's to fight facism and corruption, and facism and corruption is now running wild out of control with no "good guys with guns", I think it won't matter if we ban all guns across the board permanently, including for cops.

Yeah this is a bad opinion.

Arms don’t stop fascism per se (and have nothing to do with corruption), but they give the people targeted by fascism a chance. The people in the Warsaw uprising all died but they took some Nazis with them and probably saved some of the comrades.

The Black folk in the south during Jim Crow who armed themselves made it risky to target them so it kept some racists away.

Without the threat of violence from the oppressed classes, the oppressor would have even more success with the genocides.

I'm going to preemptively put a /s up here since most of you don't seem to understand sarcasm.

Don't you understand you silly little man? Only the government should have a monopoly on violence that way when I take over the government I could use it to persecute all the people that I don't like just the way it was used to persecute me. I have this intent because I myself am a good and just person. It's just everyone else that's evil and rotten and bad /s

If you're wondering why conservatives are actively targeting trans individuals and non-us migrants, it's because those groups have much harder times holding firearms legally and are much easier to bully without fear of reprisal. (Mental health and legal barriers to firearm ownership).

The US has more privately owned guns than people. Ban or no ban, the US is not getting rid of all those guns any time soon.

Rather, perhaps the left should re-learn that the 2nd Amendment is for them, too.

No no no no no. You got it backwards. If you ban guns, then only criminals will have guns.

Instead, I think we go the other route. Everybody gets shot on their 18th birthday.

Ah, the Logan system taken to the extreme

I've often said that I will gladly participate in destroying every single gun in existence.

But it has to be all of them. No military exception, no cop exception.

However, this whole "where are the guns vs tyranny people now" thing is empty headed dreck. Because those of us on the left are right here, and those that are on the right are in support of the fascism.

We're outnumbered, and nobody actually wants a civil war. Well, that's not true. Only idiots want a civil war.

I mean, my gun is to defend my house. I'm not going to take the gun and run around shooting the abstractum of fascism. There would need to be some kind of strategy, organization, plan, etc for you to expect an armed uprising. Nobody wants to be a martyr, they just want to protect what they have and who they love.

There's a long road littered with the corpses of less bloody solutions that needs to be walked before the second amendment is leveraged, and at that point we would likely need an entire Constitutional Convention of States and rewrite of the constitution to fix our systemic issues.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

Exactly. It really seems people crowing about it don't stop to think that a bunch of random assholes packing heat isn't a revolution. It isn't even an uprising. It's just a waste of manpower and ammo.

You don't overthrow a government without some coordination and planning.

You need armaments to make it happen, but the guns don't do the job by themselves

Are you aware that Luigi Mangione constructed a makeshift firearm from things he bought at a hardware store?

Before even going through the comments, I know that I'm going to be further embarrassed by my fellow citizens.

Since people for guns in the USA keep saying it's to fight facism and corruption

Yea, all you Us americans didn't get it for such a long time that it was the corrupt and the fascists who said that.

And now they got you.

The idea is nice, but it would require a major change, and this change won't happen now.
