Fediverse vs Disinformation

1548 readers
61 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

Blame everything on the guy who isn’t even in charge. What a joke 🤦‍♀️

Remember how the Trump campaign ran ads showing what was happening in America under Trump 1, saying this was what Americans could have to fear if BIDEN got elected?

Yep. It's like all of his supporters remembered the first term as some mass fucking hallucination. I had entire groups of my family bitching his entire term only to blame everything they were bitching about on Biden within the first year of his term, refusing to acknowledge the things his administration did fix, and then blaming implementations that Trump 1.0 did on Biden saying Trump 2.0 would fix them. I thought the 2017 tax law passage couldn't be more obvious that it would cause issues due to dump, but all the gpo had to do was apply a time delay to it and suddenly all the "against" votes and dissent democrats did cast fell away to "Damn Biden raising my damn taxes. Feels like I can't afford anything due to inflation!" And it's like bro... We had a global pandemic that was so so much worse than it needed to be on our home front because Dump specifically cut the departments responsible for mitigating it before it occurred... Like how fucking stupid are people on average? Are we all just living with memory of only the past few months or what?

Well yes. Hes communist. Hage you ever tried not shooting in the general direction of a communist? It's really hard!

It wasn't too hard a few years ago, but the longer I spend on Lemmy the harder it gets.

That's a really gross answer, especially since i was joking about the state murdering people on the left.

Maybe think before saying shit like that. I guess i shouldn't expect better if someone from .world, but I still feel disappointment for some reason

Classic right wing logic: "If only there had been a cop on every street corner to prevent this from happening!".
In one of the security camera photos one can clearly see him carrying an assault rifle from the street and into the building and in the background nobody is freaking out. Even with more cops nobody would've noticed him enter that building. And once inside he killed someone from security.
The only things that could've prevented this is if that guy had gotten help for his mental health and if it wasn't so fucking easy to get a hold of firearms.

Or if we, like, stopped the massive media engine of stochastic terrorism and went after the various terrorism cults and fixed our culture. Yeah.

Really any of the three options; that, providing mental healthcare and having a society, not drowning everyone in guns.

He’s not even an elected official yet but they expect him to respond like he’s the current mayor and they think that he also somehow reduced funding for the manhattan police department as an activist? This fucking world.

This article is nice with linking all the sources and quotes:

despite New York’s stringent gun laws and the office building’s tight security…the shooting…may have been all but unstoppable.

The link they snuck into the New York Times quote is very fitting.

Mamdani does not currently support "defund the police", although he did once supported it in 2020.

Besides, no "defund the police" movement even came to fruition, so you literally can't blame that at all.

Literally everyone that ran on that and got elected had their police budget grow after they got elected.
