A long video with an annoying AI voice lamenting the loss of "democratic transport" in the form of private car ownership.

There, I saved you a click.

Same happened in Canada. The Mitsubishi Mirage was the last small car. This is the final year of it.

[–] TimeNaan@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

And it sucks unfortunately

"Wiped Out!"

"9 Shocking Reasons!"

No thank you. How about an article with actual information instead of clickbait bullshit.

Let's first try getting more and better public transport

Sorry to gatekeep, but this video has nothing to do with fuckcars. Importing a gazillion cheap Chinese small cars would just make the situation worse.

It's mainly about how sensible options among new models disappeared. Young people are priced out of new models; cities started to accommodate SUVs with more and bigger parking spots. Enshittifying cities via lobbying while chasing higher margins.

I worked in automotive and now I'm in the market for a small economical car. I don't even want it but I need it.

The only sensibe option is used, if I don't want a four wheeled Titanic. This is awful and it contributes to the current division and radicalization of car v no-car views.

Yes I noticed that. Parkings used to be mostly parallel, so those beasts were a nightmare to park and a 3 meter vehicle was desiderable and the norm. New parkings instead are angular, so the length of the vehicle doesn't matter. Problem is that in this way it takes the space of the cycling lane

Huh, in which city are you seeing this? The two examples given in the video are completely wrong. Paris tripled the parking cost for SUV's and has removed tons of curb parking. Similar thing going on in Belgium.

Italian cities

The neighborhood near us in Berlin changed to angled parking, narrowed the road, replaced lots of parking with trees over bike racks between every few parking spots, and lowered the speed limits. It's making the area into a biking & walking comfort zone where it used to be a dangerous car hellscape.

Giant SUVs, and heaven forbid US sized pickups, would stick out into the road and get hit/tickets for blocking the way. Removing cars makes a city a better place for people.

Oh come on, small cars are quite available in the EU. The issue is cars in general are too expensive, which is how it should be.

[–] kopasz7@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Now which is your stance, quite affordable or too expensive?

I'd prefer to not end up on the extreme opposite of car-dependence, where you don't have a choice; either have a public line or cycling is the best you got.

Public transport should be the first but not the only choice.

Public transit should be the first option and biking the second. Cars should not be an option except for rural areas, where they should be exclusively electric

Ford Fiesta still going stroooooong. But I get you.

[–] 31ank@ani.social 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ford cancelled the Fiesta in 2023(?). So getting a new one will be difficult but you can still get used ones in good conditions

[–] Paper_Phrog@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Yes, unfortunately. It's now the Puma, slightly uplifted. But really, a modern used fiesta would be good. Just check which years are reliable since not all generations were.

Also most of the manufacturers that have discontinued cars listed in that video still have other similar or smaller sized cars e.g honda still have the jazz, Citroën still have the ami ...

They show an image of the Fiat 500e, but it's not discontinued, production was just paused due to lower-than-expected sales.

I'm sure there's lots of models in other segments that have been discontinued too, they're just trying to cherry pick ones to build a narrative.

Remember, this is a policy at all levels. The governments love big car exports because it's a lot of money, but the auto worker unions also love this.

It's a similar dynamic to housing like flats/apartments all being oriented towards luxury standards that are unaffordable and drive up the prices. Society is allowing these corporations to try to get the maximum profits at the cost of society and the environment.

This can be easily reversed by taxing them heavily. Make them unprofitable.

edit: I disagree with the video's implications that everyone should own a car. Fuck cars. If they become a (obvious) luxury, they should definitely be removed from urban areas and not be subsidized in any way. Let them play with their luxury cars on private race tracks.
