Well, they’re about to sink the SS United States… I thought it was satire but it’s an actual thing they’re doing. They’re sinking it in Florida which seems fitting.

Oh, if they are sinking it in Florida we definitely dont need to worry about seeing the United States ever again.

They could just drag it inland a bit and give it a few years and it'd be underwater too. But you know would probably be full of crackheads and predators before it goes under.

They're not actually sinking the SS United States as an artificial reef - its just in danger of being scrapped because nobody can afford the $60k/month maintence costs, check out gearscouts.com/power-stations if your intrested in emergency power solutions that are way more affordable than keeping a historic ocean liner afloat.

They either got really lazy around 2012 or the entire team was replaced by AI.

[–] Fenrisulfir@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

2012 was supposed to be the end of the world. Maybe the mayans decided it wasn’t worth watching after that season.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The Mayans didn't have a working understanding of multiverse theory, their predictions didn't account for the existence of The Bad Timeline (also it was an end of an era thing, not an end of the world thing)

The council of destiny is bereft of ideas as this point.

We're playing with other simulations on our own time and leaving the last one rudderless.

Hacky? They're clearly about to OD on Adderall, so much is happening and none of it makes any sense

Nope. River washout will have contaminated it enough to not be low background.

I thought climate change was melting polar ice, so sea levels are rising. Is that not the case?

Thanks. Understand now.

[–] pedz@lemmy.ca 30 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Because you have the wrong information.

Climate change is provoking climate instabilities. Yes, the sea will rise, and it will affect some estuaries, but not enough to go far inland. However, the instabilities also mean less rain in some places, and flooding in others. It makes the climate less stable.

So, climate change will make some places become dry and unable to grow food. Maybe not year round, but if a crop is planted in the spring, and the summers now have a few scorching heat waves every year, it will make them fail.

I knew I was wrong. Hence why I asked the question. Thanks for the answer to my first question.

It can even make some parts of the world colder...

The Danube is a river that runs from the south of Germany to the Black Sea.

As temperatures rise and snowpack in the Alps is depleted, the volume of water flowing into the Danube falls over time.

The Atlantic Ocean is rising with melting polar ice. The rivers of Central Europe don't have access to that glacial run-off.
