Maybe it comes from a position of privilege, but theaters suck.

Noise cancelling from neighbouring movies tends to be crap so I can hear two movies at once. The chairs are generally uncomfortable. The audio balancing is either ass unless its IMAX, but then IMAX is too damn loud. The visual quality is not normally better than what my 5 year old phone can do. Subtitle solutions are either nonexistant or have horrid delay. Despite paying more to see movies now, you have to sit through a bunch of ads that have cringe humor and awful audio balancing. Snacks cost way to fucking much, a hot dog is not $17 jesus fuck. Theaters are also too scared to kick out disruptive customers now because the big wigs see that as lost revenue, but that just makes more people not want to go to the movies. Movies have mostly become so formulaic that its almost never worth the hype and fomo to see it in theaters and put up with the poor experience. Theyve alao become exhausringly long with no intermission and nothing of actual value to say for that added run time.

The alternative is to wait a few months and watch it on a streaming service, or rent it for a fraction of the theater ticket. Then you can watch it on your preferred screen with cheap snacks, audio that you can tune, the ability to pause and take a break, turn on subtitles, and sit on furniture that you'll probably enjoy. No hassle over seating for your friends and family, and no dealing with disruptive randos.

Theaters need to figure out how to justify themselves soon or they aren't surviving the upcoming recession/depression. The only theaters I've seen make a mark have all been indie theaters that play older and imported films while providing trivia before and sometimes aftef the film, while also providing seating that is basically couches and recliners that were probably thrifted and restored. My favorite was inside a bakery, so you could get some freshly made baked goods from a local business before you head on in to watch Goofy Movie or The Goonies. However, these theaters are affordable because they dont bow to hollywood accounting and deals with major studios, so it seems unlikely that theaters that show the latest movies will ever be able to afford being a quality experience again.

In other words Olson is setting a boundary to kill her career, cause that industry is closer to the titan submersible than it is the titanic

Well said and that is not from a position of privilege. Going to the theater just hasn’t been worth if for well over a decade, unless you are going to a Luxury theater such as Cinebistro or Alamo Drafthouse.

What a great comment. Thanks.

There's nothing like a film projected on a huge screen, with good sound, seen with an audience. And being part of a discussion with real people that spills out into the lobby and beyond. I'd hate to live a life where I only watched movies in my living room no matter how good the setup is. To those with issues with audience etiquette and prices, I empathize but if you have seen one blockbuster at a huge multiplex 5 years ago that is not the be all end all of theatre experience.

I stopped going after the last film I watched in the cinema had people on their phones or others chatting to each other. The cinema etiquette is dead and I prefer to watch it at home these days.

That being said, most films that see a theatrical release are generally better so I don't want that to die. I don't mind waiting to see it on my sofa where I can take a toilet break without ruining it.

Boo hoo hoo.

Guess you’ll not be in a lot of new movies you big baby.

The majority of people don’t give a shit about the crapy theatre experience anymore. People have big enough TVs and prefer to ability to pause and eat whatever they want without paying exuberant prices just to get your chair kicked by some kid while others film brain rot TikToks.

Go find a different way to self aggrandize yourself and play rich and famous with the other disconnected shithead celebrities elsewhere.

Yup. With the way theater pricing has gotten lately, it’s no wonder. My rural theater’s prices went up by 50% for tickets while simultaneously kneecapping their rewards. We were a family that would see a movie every 1-2 months as long as there was something good. This year we’ve seen three. It’s just not worth it anymore, and with every passing day, upgrading/modernizing my home theater seems a much better investment.

Which stinks because I genuinely do like my theater and have been going there for 10+ years, and I love going, but the pricing, especially for tickets, has become ludicrous.

Bros crashing out

exorbitant*

But yes, I agree, on all accounts. Don't forget about when all the good seats are taken and now you have to sit in the front row and crane your neck up, left or right to see the damn screen. I haven't been to a traditional theater since COVID. Much rather watch it from the comfort of my home and lounging recliners, while eating and drinking whatever I want, purchased from the grocery store for $5-10. It's a much better experience for much less money.

*exorbitant

IDK... Movie theatre prices are pretty exciting. I mean, they make my heart race every time I see them!

Makes sense if part of your paycheck is based on the box office take and they decide to only show it on their streaming service. I'm looking at you Disney.

Everyone here is just commenting on the headline and not what she actually said and meant…

[–] TheImpressiveX@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

Thanks for clarifying, I should have posted the actual quote in the body.

“If a movie is made independently and only sells to a streamer, then fine. But I don’t want to make something where [streaming is] the end-all,” Olsen said.

[–] AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works -3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

“I think it’s important for people to gather as a community, to see other humans, be together in a space. That’s why I like sports. I think it’s really powerful for people to come together for something that they’re excited about. We don’t even audition in person anymore.”

When's the last time she had to suffer through a movie with a screaming toddler, a bunch of teens with their phones on, and somebody loudly having a conversation behind them?

What exactly is the headline misrepresenting about what she said and meant?

[–] Ankkuli@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

How did you find the actual core of what she is saying and still not understand what she means?

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Oh shit does that mean we're finally gonna not make Scarlet Witch the main antagonist in anything Marvel now?

[–] Maestro@fedia.io 3 points 2 days ago

Good thing that streamers usually have some sort of theatrical release then. Even if it's in the boondocks, at night, for and empty theater. Otherwise they wouldn't be eligible for prizes like the Oscars.

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago

Wait, there's 3 Olsen twins?

[–] Nanook@lemmy.zip -1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

She might be a bit disconnected. She’s not getting any offers for theatrically released movies, but doesn’t relate it to her own popularity.
