What does your battlestation look like? PS4/5, XBox, PC or some oddball Chinese retro handheld?

Steamdeck took over most of my gaming. It's by far the best gaming device ever made imo.

[–] 0xc0ba17@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 years ago

I'm playing on my Steam Deck like I was playing on my Switch 6 years ago. I prefer my indie games on handheld devices, so a good half of my playtime is spent on the Deck.

I have a full gaming rig, but mainly play on my Steamdeck - it's so much more convenient to just be able to pick it up and play.

[–] limeaide@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What games have you been playing?

[–] havocpants@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Metroidvanias recently - Dead Cells, Blasphemous, Hollow Knight, that kind of thing

[–] raresbears@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 years ago

Arch Linux (btw)

(on desktop not a laptop or anything)

[–] jvalleroy@midwest.social 6 points 2 years ago

Steam Deck, it's been great for working through my backlog.

[–] flunky@lemmy.flunky.club 6 points 2 years ago

Steam Deck.

I've never owned a decent gaming machine, for various reasons. Cost was a big factor. Another was the fact that I was never a big "gamer". Very little desire to play the big, popular, AAA games in general. The games I did play, I played on a very old PC, and the performance was what you'd expect from low end hardware; but I just never had any desire to build my own gaming rig.

The Steam Deck is perfect for my use case:

  • I have no desire to run Windows
  • I have no desire to build my own gaming machine
  • I have no desire to get locked into a console ecosystem (Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, etc).
  • I can play handled, docked to a monitor with keyboard and mouse, docked to a monitor with a controller, docked to a TV, etc etc
  • I can play games built for Windows
  • I can play games with native Linux builds
  • I can play Steam games, Epic games, DRM-free games, emulated games, etc, etc
  • I can do whatever the hell else I want to do with it. For example, maybe I might want to run Kodi on it, and connect to my Jellyfin server at home to watch a movie if I'm staying at a hotel. Whatever. It's just a computer like any other. I can do whatever I want.

I think I've probably played more new (to me) games since buying my SD than in all the years (decades) previous, and I love it.

PC, Steam Deck.

PC for multiplayer titles that require comms, and Steam Deck for everything else.

[–] GhostMagician@beehaw.org 5 points 2 years ago

Steam Deck has been one of my best purchases to use alongside my PC. I have a Switch too, but I don't use it much when there aren't new exclusives. But, the Deck having the same ga,e progress as my main PC has led to constant use when I want to play on a handheld.

[–] XLRV@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 years ago

Same, I use mostly PC for multiplayer games and for more demanding games. I use my Deck to play older games / indies that runs well, but I have a hard time playing games with low fps.

[–] HER0@beehaw.org 5 points 2 years ago

For all of my gaming needs, I have a desktop PC running Linux as well as a Steam Deck. I recently came back from a trip that had me using my Steam Deck a lot, and it was great.

[–] Swintoodles@beehaw.org 5 points 2 years ago

PC exclusively nowadays. Not a fan of forced obsolescence rampant in consoles. Maybe the odd phone game to pass the time, but those are usually the most basic of games.

[–] ursabursa@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Split between Switch, RG300 and my very outdated pc.

[–] KeavesSharpi@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 years ago

I used to be PS / PC, but with Steam, I just game on PC. I have a livingroom PC with xbox controllers for the couch experience, but don't see the point of having a console anymore.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Primarily my gaming PC, but it's getting pretty old. AMD FX-8350, 16GB RAM, GeForce 1050Ti, lots of storage.

In the living room I have a Switch and Steam Deck, I play the Steam Deck more lately, mostly for co-op games like Stardew and Brawlhalla.

Oh and I still have my fat PS3 hooked up in the living room, played some Rock Band on it this weekend.

[–] joshuar9476@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

I have a PC, Switch, and my Android. I mostly use RetroArch and transfer saves between the PC and Android. I also play Fortnite, but only on the PC. I rarely use the switch.

[–] lnklnx@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

I have a Gentoo Desktop hooked to a TV for Steam games, plus a Gentoo laptop for casual stuff.

[–] ForNoRaisin@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Combination of PC and Steam Deck, depending on the game, as well as Retro Arch on my phone for the occasional Pokemon ROM hack during my lunch break

[–] Null@pawb.social 4 points 2 years ago

I game on Switch, PC and Android. Recently it's been on Switch mostly, but I alternate between it and PC depending on if I get burned out.

[–] DearAll@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

A laptop running Fedora Linux

[–] rodinj@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

PC and Switch, I do have an Xbox One (yes the old one) but it's collecting dust.

Mostly Steam Deck these days, though I keep a GPD Win 2 in my pocket most of the time for gaming on the go.

[–] mananevergone@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Wii/GameCube for me (also PC just for Slippi)

[–] WingedSeven@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 years ago

Mostly my computer, but I've also got my PS3 beside me on the desk. For the whole family to use elsewhere is a PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch, and Wii U together, and yonder elsewhere is a PS2, N64, and a Sega Genesis. Sounds like a lot, and I also think we oughta slim that down. Too much stuff that not enough of us use to justify it.

[–] jmabeebiz@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 years ago

PS5, Xbox Series X occasionally, and Nintendo Switch for Mario and Zelda games. I’ve considered a Steam Deck too. But my primary is PlayStation.

[–] gingerrich@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

PC only when I game. I never really got in to concole gaming apart from a couple of brief stints with a PS1 and an XBox.

Originally it was because I played a lot of flight Sims and then RPGs like Baldurs' Gate which didn't work for concole due to all the buttons needed.

[–] Errant@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

PC and PS5. Bought an Ultrawide monitor at one point last year and that's been a little bit of a game changer for me so I'm pretty entrenched as a PC main.

My PS5 lives in the living room and my wife uses it more than I do, but God of War made that purchase all the way worth it for me with how much I enjoyed that game haha.

[–] Cowabunghole@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 years ago

I built my first ever gaming pc this year so I've been trying to get through an infinite backlog of pc games that I've missed over the years. But as of right now all my focus is going towards TOTK on Switch

[–] Boozilla@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

A custom PC that runs modern games on good settings but is also designed to run quietly. Fan noise bugs me.

I wish I could say that I built it myself (I used to build my own systems, years ago). But instead I paid way too much for it. I'm happy with it, but yeah...build your own if you have the time and energy!

[–] 1993_toyota_camry@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

In order of frequency: Steam Deck, Switch, PC (linux)

Xbox One used to get some use, but not much anymore. Now and then I'll pull out the NES, Genesis or Intellivision for some retro gaming.

[–] scribblemacher@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I general stick with a GBC or GBA with an Everdrive, as well as a DSi with custom firmware. It gives me the benefit of original hardware without paying the absurd retro game prices.

[–] XLRV@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Do you have a backlight mod for your Gameboys? I'm tempted to mod my GBA but I know I won't use it lol

[–] scribblemacher@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

No backlight mods. I actually like the stock screen. Not having a backlight is what gave the GB and GBC it's legendary battery life. In addition, many GB and GBC (not not necessarily all GBA) games were designed with a non-backlit screen in mind.

That said my GBA is a SP AGS100 (front light)

I was always a big Xbox gamer, but after I got an Xbox Series X and found that the games I play have almost no online users. So I got a PS5 and turned off my Xbox, its a whole level above Xbox.

I do some gaming on Linux (Stellaris, Crusader Kings, Endless Space 2) for strategy games.

[–] bulbatea@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 years ago

My gaming desktop PC is my primary gaming rig. I run linux on there and its honestly been great, I've been really happy with my 7900XTX and it plays all games I want at 4K. My steam deck is a close second for portable/sofa gaming.

[–] Kamirose@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Mostly PC, but I recently pulled my Switch out again and have been playing on that lately.

A PC I just built this year, I have probably used it more to steam thing then play honestly. I don't have too much time to play things with kids.

[–] LeifJ@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I mainly play https://geoguessr.com in a bog standard web browser. Ubuntu. No console or advanced gaming pc rig.

PC for modern games. Home made arcade cabinet for roms.

[–] FirstWizardZorander@lemmy.one 3 points 2 years ago

Right now I'm mainly gaming on my Switch for Nintendo first-party games, and Steam Deck for most of the rest. I have a Linux workstation that has an RX6600, so I use that for the more demanding titles, or when I just want keyboard/mouse.

[–] ClaySpears@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 years ago

I have a PC and a Nintendo Switch I swore I was gonna use when TOTK until giving myself a heaping backlog to get through on my pc before I start a new game anywhere- so the switch gathers dust still.

[–] gohomology@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

I play mostly on my Switch, because my PC (laptop running Ubuntu, though I plan to switch to Arch when I find the time) isn't very strong.

Though, I do also play go on my PC, and rarely other games.
