Israel's High Court of Justice unanimously ruled on Thursday that same-sex couples are eligible to adopt children.

The verdict was reached by three presiding justices following a petition, which argued that Section 3 of the Adoption Law must be interpreted so LGBT couples would be eligible to adopt within the scope of the existing law.

Look at that. Even a genocidal ethnostate is more progressive on LGBT+ issues than Republicans.

Can you please include the country in the post title.

[–] Stamau123@lemmy.world 33 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I wanted to but posts have been removed before without having the correct title

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 34 points 1 year ago

Put it in [brackets] so it doesn't change the headline.

“You can be gay, just don’t be a fucking Palestinian!” —Israel

[–] stevehobbes@lemy.lol 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Israel has special LGBT work permits and asylum processes for Palestinians who are gay. There are more Palestinians out in Israel than in Palestine.

[–] carl_dungeon@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well yeah, all the ones in Palestine were blown up over the last few months.

Come on, I know the Middle East isn’t safe for our gay friends- but that doesn’t mean we should give a free pass to one group mass-killing the other sides children just because they have better gay optics.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 5 points 1 year ago

No one was giving them a free pass come on.

Fantastic!

Next, end apartheid and occupation!! 😍🌈

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Same sex couples who are members of ruling party only, child must raised Jewish and attend state school where they pledge allegiance every day.

As an avid Palestine supporter, I gotta say the news is not about that, and bringing it up out of context is just the means to hijack attention to the position we're all already aware of.

This piece of news is good, regardless of the conflict. Might be a little weird for them to focus on that right now, might be a political game, but it is good regardless.

My congratulations to Israeli LGBTQ+ community.

[–] Urist@lemmy.ml -1 points 1 year ago

Discussion of apartheid is definitely out of context in response to news about ending former discrimination. /s

[–] burchalka@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

With Israeli obsession with children and family, it is extremely hard for LGBT, or any other couples to adopt - they have to prove they have the means to raise up these kids - both material and psychological.

[–] FriendOfElphaba@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

What is the alternative? Do they stay with foster families?

I’m just curious. I know nothing about adoption in the US much less Israel. I have to think there’d be some kind of principle of least harm and some evidence-based policies.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

You don't even have to allow Jewish couples to adopt in the U.S. if you're a state-sponsored Christian adoption agency.

Meanwhile Israel remains the biggest killer of LGBTQ+ Palestinians.

[–] protist@mander.xyz 31 points 1 year ago

This is the same Israeli court that has ruled against Netanyahu multiple times, and which he has been desperately trying to delegitimize for fear of eventually going to prison. What Israel is doing is terrible, and we also shouldn't automatically dismiss progressive voices in Israel just because they are Israeli. There is a large percentage of Israel that does not support Netanyahu or the genocide he has undertaken

Sadly, even with the most recent conflict, that’s almost certainly not true.

Israel has special visa/work permit/asylum process for LGBT Palestinians. I would bet there’s more gay and out Palestinians in Israel than there are in Palestine.

Gaza/Hamas are especially awful relative to the West Bank.

Im not sure straight Palestinians are getting a pass.

[–] Altofaltception@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

When they murder 1700 LGBTQ+ people, then we can talk.

8% of the world's population identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Israel has killed 21,000 Palestinians in Gaza. Assuming the same percentage, that is 1680 people who identified themselves as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

In the 20 years of Hamas rule, they have not killed 1680 people in Gaza for being gay.

[–] Apollo@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Cool so source is "I am guessing"

[–] Altofaltception@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Are you denying that Israel killed 21000 people?

[–] Apollo@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

Are you asserting that 8% of the population of Gaza is LGBT?

How convenient! There's now thousands of orphans looking for homes!

[–] Doorbook@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Would be wild if hamas anounce the same..

[–] DoomBot5@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They could start by not stoning anyone discovered to be gay.

[–] Adanisi@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

You're being downvoted, but you're right.

Just because the people Hamas govern are having atrocities committed against them does not exempt Hamas, or Palestinians, from criticism. Especially not in matters unrelated to conflict.

[–] gregorum@lemm.ee -1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I’m not gonna congratulate Israel for doing the right thing while they’re also committing genocide
