Fuck Slovakia for these threats. They've had almost 3 years to prepare, without their infrastructure being constantly bombed.
Bunch of entitled assholes. With friends like that...
It would also be a clear possibility that Russia would block the gas anyway, as they did even before the war to put pressure on EU.
Russia is not a reliable or trustworthy partner, Slovakia should have realized that, and taken steps to not depend on Russia.
If Slovakia has shortages now, it's 100% their own fault.

While Fico said that Slovak households would not face energy shortages, he said Slovakia stands to lose €500 million ($513 million) annually in transit revenue.

Oh for fucks sake!!!

oh no not 0.4% of Slovakia's GDP the country is ruined

[–] bananymous@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 month ago

Fucking right. Perfectly stated. Fico is a shit, and clearly so were his predecessors that they thought they could luxuriate in cheap Russian gas forever. What garbage policy-making is this?

Can always make your own EU with Hungary. With blackjack, and hookers.

Well, Ukraine's going to need its population and their economic output back, and while the war is not over, the fronts have considerably stabilized -- most of the country is not at risk of attacks aside from the occasional drone or ballistic missile, and there aren't deep penetrations into Ukrainian-held territory any more. I think that winter 2024 may be the last electricity crunch; population being outside of Ukraine helped reduce demand at a time of scarcity.

Ukraine seeks return of up to 10 million refugees and migrants fleeing Russia’s war

The government has created a Ministry of National Unity that hopes to attract residents abroad and ease the demographic crisis to address the reconstruction of the country

Kyiv is considering all sorts of solutions. It is in favor of EU member states cutting aid to refugees as a means of exerting pressure

While I don't at all think that this is the most-diplomatic way for Slovakia to do this, I suppose that it might be something that Kyiv could live with insofar as it aligns with Kyiv's concerns.

Not going to happen in Germany, welfare is (perpetually) at the constitutional minimum. Kicking people out OTOH is an option, especially for people without job or kids. Kicking kids out won't happen before the end of the war and without job, depends on the employment market. Depending on how quickly Ukraine joins the EU, possibly never.

What's going to be an issue is the draft: Ukraine is likely to have to guarantee that noone is going to be forced to serve at arms they'll have to offer positions in the rear, civil defence, etc... which is then going to cause a discussion within Ukraine whether that shouldn't apply to everyone, not just people who were in Germany.

Europe should take its inspiration from a green plumber.

They had years to get their shit together and switch suppliers. This is a problem of their own making, not Ukraine's.
