Been using this for years, it’s good, but probably not for everyone. I like being able to manually sort the order of my folders, and it forces a maximum folder depth of like 3 or 4 depending on how you interpret one part. This makes it very quick to navigate, particularly from the command line. Add something like Zoxide on top and I can fly through all my notes and projects.

Within the silly metaphor I made with languages, the “colonizer” approach would be to make the people use a non-native language for potentially complex cultural concepts best described with their words.

If not knowing how to communicate with people makes someone feel left out or something, they shouldn’t blame the people speaking their native language for that divide, they should put in the effort to find common communication tools and willingly accept knowledge from the native speakers without pushing back on how to use language that is unknown to them.

To tie this back to pronouns and queer theory and what have you. When people say “I don’t understand neopronouns” then they are just saying they don’t know a language. That language is a subset of a language they might consider themselves a speaker of, but it is a portion of that language they do not yet know. It is also language they can choose to adopt so as to communicate with the people that use it, or choose to not learn, and reasonably expect to not be communicated with.

If someone decides they are willing to start learning that language they need to be prepared to self teach. It’s not every queer person’s responsibility to educate people. Some folks have the emotional capacity to help teach, but there’s also tons of resources on queer theory and inclusive language that can be easily found with a google search without ever having to expose a queer person to inaccurate or harmful language.

Let’s be real—the vast majority of us were raised in a very cisnormative culture. And there was a lot of conscious and unconscious bigotry that most of us absorbed from that

Hi, another trans person here.

I was also one of those vast majority of people raised in cisnormative culture. Just like you. After a lot of thought and introspection I realized the person I am in my mind, did not match the corporeal form I was given. So I am taking steps to make that vision of my self a reality. That often means using language that is not used in “cisnormative culture”. As with any language you don’t speak, you have two options. Learn to speak it yourself and come back to converse with those people OR choose not to learn it and move on with your life, leaving them be. Some people think there is this funny little third option called “colonization”, but it’s generally frowned upon. /lh

Yeah fair. A big part of my interest in it is that it split from Opera Software through a staff buyout, which to me says the people working there and maintaining it care a touch more than some companies. From the literature I consumed when signing up they seemed very privacy forward, and as a Proton VPN user I didn’t want all my eggs in one basket should Proton turn out to be a honeypot. That all being said, I agree with your point that they are subject to a legal system that doesn’t put users first compared to other countries, though for anything really sensitive I’m not really sure I would be using email to begin with, particularly not one I use for general clear net personal communication like banking and such.

Considering sex a binary is in fact a social construct. Intersex people exist, “male” seahorses get pregnant. Some frog species can changes sexes to help balance population. A universal biological sex binary is not what nature shows. Claiming such a binary exists is necessarily a social construct, or at least social simplification of reality. Much in the way saying one magnetic pole is positive and the other negative, or “spin” on electrons. They are all social constructs.

The queerness of nature does not care about the mental gymnastics we humans have to jump through to try and make sense of things.

Fastmail has been treating me well. Unlimited aliases and masked emails are really the only features I use, but it’s got sort of the classic suite of productivity tools you’d expect. I self host equivalents of these, but for a drop in replacement for most of the g-suite it’s good without trying to be more than it needs to be.

Maybe it’s just the nostalgia, but I have always been a fan of Phantom Menace. Not sure I’d call any of them S tier, but at least relative to each other’s placement I think I mostly agree with this.

Absolutely! Growth is important and not every possible community is mirrored on the fediverse. But if anything this is all the more reason for interpersonal connections to drive new user growth. That will naturally help filter users to instances they align with. I’m considering going so far as to host an instance specifically for my geographical area to really lean into the idea of a “local” internet.

[–] Arkhive@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I’m going to be holding a teach-in about the fediverse. AFK I mean. Like the people I live with, and am in community with in meat space. They all want to ditch corpo social media, but aren’t sure how. I’ll hold a digital one too for my more extended community, but I want to start with the people I truly live with. I think word of mouth is a great way to onboard people as it allows for a dynamic level of handholding. This is essentially “grassroots” social media after all.

I don’t really want Reddit to join Lemmy en masse. I want the people that see the value of pre-2010 social media, and the “local” internet, to understand and have access to these tools and spaces. I think that will be best done through education, not advertising. Advertising the platform is exactly what all the platforms we want to ditch do, and we are actively trying to not be those platforms.

The sense of “needing” more users, to me at least, is a hold out of the “infinite growth”, capitalist, mindset. I don’t want infinite growth for my instance, I want the people it’s made for to find it, and enjoy communicating with the people they share it with.

Yeah, my ideal setup would be a script that uses the Spotify API to fetch my discover weekly, and then if I like a song it goes and downloads the whole album it’s from, with the option of the artists whole discography. I’m slowly working through all my playlists finding the album each song is on, but I should really automate that process.

4get.ca has been doing well for me. You have to answer easy (and cute!) captchas periodically for bot prevention, buts it’s been stable, and results are at least as good as other options so far as I’m concerned.

Hello!

I'm Arkhive (they/she), one of your new mods and I've just got a sort of update from the mod team.

We, the mods of Onehundredninetysix (hereby referred to as OneNineSix for my own sanity), would like to introduce ourselves. The members of the mod team that are interested will post a comment below this post and hopefully mingle a bit. Something that has come up in our discussions is a general interest in owning our actions, even in online spaces. That means putting people behind the names you see in the sidebar.

As the OneNineSix community coalesces, things have been quite good from our end. While we could be quicker at processing reports, a lot of that stems from us discussing choices as a group before making final decisions...and probably a bit more fear to use our power than is good for us, but time I'm sure will fix that proceeds to power trip. We are absolutely not infallible, and we also strive to admit wrong when necessary and work to rectify it. There is a degree of patience that necessarily extends both directions between mods and users, and in the end we are all users of the same space. We will work to be good stewards of this space for all those being good stewards with us.

And so! This thread. If this idea goes over poorly, please take it out in the replies to my comment, and we will assess and hopefully the other mods will dive in on the discussion too. We have also floated the idea of an irregularly occurring, semi-regular, mod chat thread. My pitch is for "Modly Mondays" but its still an idea in its infancy and feedback is welcome;)

Thank you for your time, thank you for the memes (the cat included), and I'll ~~remove~~ see you ~~from~~ in the comments.

TL;DR I'm Arkhive (they/she), I'm a mod, there's more of us (surprise!), and we'd like to introduce ourselves in the comments.

Side note: I realize this is being posted on a day there are protests happening across the US and presumably throughout the world. While this is not an explicitly US comm, I want to remind people to stay safe. Know your rights, know the ACLU phone number, have an exit plan, go as a group, and don't talk to cops. We keep us safe.

I’m interested in a phone with a physical keyboard. There is a mod for the FairPhone I spotted, but that’s not fully supported in the US yet. So I’m looking at buying the inspiration for the mod the BlackBerry Key2. I’ve heard it can be hard to get other firmwares on it. I’m particularly eyeing CalyxOS. Has anyone had any luck with this.

Degoogling Android TV? (lemmy.blahaj.zone)
submitted 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) by Arkhive@lemmy.blahaj.zone to c/privacy@lemmy.ml

Basically the title but I have a few requirements I’d love to meet.

I have a “Smart Soundbar” that I actually quite like the audio of, as well as serving as an HDMI hub and switch, with a decent remote ect. Basically I like the hardware quite a bit and it is generally high quality, particularly the audio quality, it’s from a reputable home audio company, blah blah blah.

I got it as part of some promo with my ISP so it has their slightly customized version of Android TV on it. I’ve already gotten side loading apps working, I have my YouTube client and VPN running, Jellyfin, all that. Now I just want to get rid of all the google apps and ISP tweaks. I would also love to maintain some sort of casting option akin to chromecast or AirPlay. Is there an Android app that turns a device into an AirPlay receiver? I have one for Linux.

I realize the “best” option is to not connect the thing to the Internet, but that defeats the purpose of having access to say the Netflix app with my VPN running. Or giving relatives a “Netflix” like experience with my Jellyfin server running offsite.

Just looking for any advice on maintaining functionality of the high quality speaker and generally good Android TV interface while clawing back some privacy. I’d be willing to flash it with something totally different though if anyone know how to do that.

For some reason I can only find stock images of this pill case. I have it on good authority it makes a satisfying clicking noise and my gay, neurodivergent ass wants one.

Ideally not an Amazon link, I deleted my account a bit ago and I do not plan to make a new one.

UPDATE: It would seems this is a prepackaged way E is sometimes distributed. Thanks to folks that pointed this out.

Somehow this was a fitting first screen out of the terminal…

I could have sworn I wasn’t wearing thigh highs a moment ago…huh continues typing

picture is of a Hatsune Miku edited to be sitting at a table from a Calvin and Hobs comic, with a sign on the front of the table reading "Hatsune Miku (creator of Minecraft) is very deserving of this meme format"

I realize that the lines of text in a normal file have gaps between then, which almost instantly renders this impossible, but I’ll ask anyway. I’m looking for a way to get diagrams like ASCIIFlow in my notes. I’d even settle for a dedicated tab/filetype similar to canvas. My use case here is input with a stylus on a tablet and the original site struggles. Just doing weird things with highlighting random text, because the whole page is text. Canvas kind of does what I want, but there is a speed and elegance to ACSII flow, with the added ability to copy the result as text. I often use Obsidian to write documentation, and various system diagrams often come up. Being able to use characters rather than an image would be great.

In case the “” in the title aren’t clear, I cannot actually offer any financial compensation for this, should a plugin actually be made.
