I hope this is not off topic. I love using 4k screensavers for my tv, like long forest walks, birds, or fish. Unfortunately almost all of the fish ones are creatures from the oceans. I like those too, but does anyone know of some nice, hours long, videos from freshwater fish or shrimp?

I miss my fishtanks, so i would really enjoy watching them on tv, whether in the wild or in big tanks.

They would pick me out

They can probably understand way more words than you think

Last book: Children of ruin. I didnt really like this one, while i was in awe of the brilliance of Children of time.

Currently reading a non-fiction book called The genius of birds. I already knew from direct experience how smart birds are, including ones that people perceive as dumb, like pigeons. But this book really gives a different perspective in how birds are complex creatures that adapt to their environments in intelligent ways, and how other birds will instantly copy these novel ways.

My, aren't you a big kitty!...

Actually, i should instead know what the most effective way for industries is to lower their carbon footprint. Btw, that footprint concept was invented by one of the big oil companies to shift blame to the consumer, afaik

As a european, it takes me 8 minutes to walk to a supermarket, though i use a bicycle

I know that dogs are, but i don't know the percentages. You can see it by observing the front paws when they start to walk; which one do they usually start with

Afaik there is a specific spot between the shoulders with brown fat that acts as a temperature regulator. As a caveat, i read this in a (scientific) article decades ago.

Even a kind smile or sincerely wishing someone a good day can be enough. You can perhaps do more, but even this can be a support for people, something to look forward to on difficult days

Not only jealousy towards other pets. My dogs and cats have been known to squeeze in between me and my phone, sit on papers i'm reading, or standing in front of the tv

First off, i live in Europe, so i honestly don't know too much about politics in other parts of the world, other than what i sometimes see in the news. I hope my innocent question doesn't trigger any nastiness.

My question is; in discussions i see only talk about democrats vs republicans, for instance discussions only about Biden and/or Trump. But my understanding is that there are other political parties one can vote for. However, i never see any mention of them. So, is it that most people are not interested in those? Or maybe they don't get enough media time? Or are they seen as too extreme? Are the US basically a two-party system? And does it change over time? There are a lot of worries in the world - i don't need to name all of them - but this seems to trigger more extreme views. Does this mean that those other parties attract more voters nowadays?

So, a few weeks after my very first covid attack, i still have some fogginess. So, i discovered a few tiny mistakes in my little bookmark cross stitch. And i stopped working on it, because i had already fixed some other small mistakes and i was feeling disheartened. I contemplated whether i could stitch over them (but i'm a bit of a neat freak, so this tells you how i felt about it), or rip them out, or just ignore them and keep going. And for a week i was looking at that thing on my desk, waiting for me to make a decision. So, today i picked it up again and checked my pattern. I did not make a mistake. I colored them wrong on my chart...

(For anyone interested, it's the Vevaco PN 0184423 kit.)

I hope this question is allowed here (since it is one of the search engines that i now use instead of google). I'm trying out Kagi. For the trial, you get to have 100 free searches, i belief. Is there a way to see how many searches i used up? I can only find stats for Kagi, not for my personal stats. How do you all like Kagi? And if so, do you pay for it? I'm considering paying, but i would like to have some insight into how many searches i actually perform on average in a month time. I honestly have no idea. What i also do lately is ask a question to a LLM (i found Petal), so that i have a start on where to search for more precisely. Sometimes, i get incorrect answers, but often it helps me get more of a handle on what i should be looking for when using a search engine. For example, i switched to Linux and Petal helps me understand some things better, which i can then use to do a more precise search.

I never go there anymore, but i made an exception to read Protons plans for the (near) future. I found it very interesting, so wanted to share here.

Update: i went to reddit because there was an AMA from proton . There, they said: *The only reason why our Linux clients are lagging from a development is simply that it is extremely difficult to hire Linux Desktop developers.

So for anyone reading this, if you are based anywhere in the European timezone and willing to take up on the challenge, apply here: https://boards.eu.greenhouse.io/proton/jobs/4140067101*

Still reading all the replies, very greatful for the tips and responses, thank you all!

Thought i would share this with you all:

I contacted Proton for a technical issue and decided to also ask about their plans for Drive for Linux. Their response:

Proton Drive on Linux: Regarding the availability of a Proton Drive client for Linux, this is a common feature request that many users have expressed interest in. Our team is aware of the growing demand for a Linux client. While we currently do not have an ETA for when a Linux client might be available, we have not ruled out the possibility of working on it in the future.

I'm very disappointed, since i'm probably going to switch to Linux over the weekend.

Update; Proton got back to me and apparently it was my local drive, not a cap on Proton.

== Hi all,

I'm preparing to move to Linux and am backing up a number of files on My Files (so, not the synced files). I have used about 90 GB on my proton account, but in total i have 550 GB available. While i was moving files, i suddenly got a popup that i only have 2 GB left on My Files. So, there is a cap on that? I have never read anything about this. Does anyone here know more?

I'm pretty disappointed, because now it will take a lot more work to decide which files i really need to keep. When i install linux, i will only have the web version of Proton Drive available, not the app. In other words, once i move to linux (not dual boot), i take it that all the sync files will be gone and i will only have My Files left. Or will it still keep the latest synced version of all the files on my Drive?

Anyone have experience with this?

EDIT: I am thrilled with so many awesome responses! I'm taking notes and looking into all the recommendations. Again, thank you so much for taking the time to help me out (and many others, i'm sure), i'm glad i asked!

Hi,

I'm getting ready to switch to Linux. I'm looking for a kind of checklist of what to do beforehand. When i search online, there is a lot of advice on which distribution to choose and how to set it up, which i already know, but my question is the step before. I made a list of which programs i currently use (almost all have a linux variant or i can use them in the browser) and i am making screenshots of their settings. I have basically everything important backupped, both on my ProtonDrive and on a private server in the house. Is there anything else i need to prepare before switching? I wouldn't want to overlook something.

(I already have the distribution and am trying it out, but my plan is to actually install debian and without dual boot. Also, many, many years ago i already used debian but then i had the luxury of someone who basically arranged everything for me)

Currently, i run windows 10 with Nvidia GeForce. I already am in the process of degoogling and de-microsofting so to speak, so i don't use google drive or onedrive, or MS Office anymore (nor a lot of other things).

Apologies if this is not appropriate for this community. Have a great day :-)

I received a mail and also confirmed on this forum that the status is updated to Planned.

No idea when it will be ready, but i'm very happy with this.

When i create an alias, let's say for a shop, sometimes i need to communicate with them; is it possible to use it to actively send them a mail through the alias i created for them? It's not like i can copy/paste it and use it in the webapp or something. Am i overlooking something, or is that just not possible?

Edit: thank you all for your answers, much appreciated to make an informed choice about the switch to linux.

As per title. I want to get rid of windows and switch to linux. I use all the proton products, both on android and windows. Is there anything i need to take into account, concerning proton? I know there is a linux version for vpn. But i seem to recall there isn't yet for the drive app but it was in the works? I have no idea how long that would take though, this year, next year?

I find it quite hard to find open source software for windows. In time i might switch to linux, but for now i am stuck with windows 10.

Is there some reliable place where you can search for open source software?

Or is it that devs usually just don't bother with windows?

EDIT: everyone, thank you so much for your input! I will check it all out. Yes, of course windows is evil, and i hope/expect to switch to linux before windows 11 comes around, but i still need it for a few programs, unfortunately. Once these come with a linux version - which is in the works - i can make the switch. Degoogling/demicrosofting is a process and i'm working on it.

Have a great weekend and thank you for the time to answer my question.
