Me and my SO live on 2 incomes that would be considered solid maybe 4-5 years ago. We literally cannot afford a child.

Well what you described isn't too different here.. except there is more hardcore tankies here

 

It is not nearly as complete now as it used to be.

Each pair of them cost me 4€ in basically completely new condition. I spent one summer in warehouse which handled Vans along others. At the end they made a finders-keepers kind of race, with unworn returned stock (wrong size, unwanted gift, etc..). My friend walked out with same sized collection. Missed the bus back so we had to walk I think 5+km in heat, each with 10-11 pairs of shoes in a huge plastic bag on our backs.
