However, the Justice Department indicated Thursday that one of the prospective asylum seekers, identified only as N.S. in public court filings, may already be en route back to Ecuador, where she says her husband — a police officer who she says has raped her, beat her and held her at gun point — might kill her.

Lawyers for the asylum seekers say the Trump administration has flagrantly ignored federal laws that require people who have “credible fear” of persecution and violence in their home countries be given a chance to legally seek shelter in the United States.

Martin is probing top elected officials over their hostile rhetoric against conservative figures. Martin recently sent letters to elected Democrats over their criticism of Musk, DOGE, and the Supreme Court. Those letters were sent to Rep. Robert Garcia (D-California) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-New York), the Post reports.

Nearly 100 migrants, recently deported by the United States to Panama where they had been locked in a hotel, were loaded onto buses Tuesday night and moved to a detention camp on the outskirts of the jungle, several of the migrants said.

It is unclear how long the group, which was deported under the Trump administration’s sweeping effort to expel unauthorized migrants, will be detained at the jungle camp.

Conditions at the site are primitive, the detainees said. Diseases, including dengue are endemic to the region, and the government has denied access to journalists and aid organizations.

“It looks like a zoo, there are fenced cages,” said one deportee, Artemis Ghasemzadeh, a 27-year-old migrant from Iran, after arriving at the camp following a four-hour drive from Panama City. “They gave us a stale piece of bread. We are sitting on the floor.”

The group includes eight children, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who was not authorized to speak on the record. Lawyers have said it is illegal to detain people in Panama for more than 24 hours without a court order.

She said she was honored to have the endorsement of well respected leaders like Liz and Dick (archived). If she genuinely recognized they were awful people she did a terrible job of communicating it.

the videos made of people trying to file a complaint againt a policeman at mutiple departments

One of the most famous examples of that was done by an investigative journalist in Florida, which lead to their state's police union putting out a BOLO (be on the lookout) announcement for him (which are usually only used for wanted criminals), where they "accidentally" leaked his personal information

The time Trump would have had to spend on that would have limited the harm he will be able to do, it is up to all of us to resist this fascist crap at every step and the Biden administration routinely failed us in that regard

Yeah, this should have been obvious back when Biden was fighting to increase their budget (archived)

e; Also, the fact that it took some independent journalists to uncover this and none of the thousands of different investigators at different agencies that interact with or oversee ICE that my federal tax dollars pay for is a disgrace. This person should and could have been fired a long time ago.

We have had and currently have some incredible authors artists and musicians who make beautiful and brilliant things that reflect the spirit of the average American far better than the handful monsters who have power over us

That's not to say other countries don't also have fascinating and ingenious creators and cultures too, just saying that ours are the thing I like most about my country

Let's not ignore all the efforts Republican governments have put into making it much more difficult for certain communities to vote

Of the DOGE list's initial claim of $16 billion in savings, half came from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) listing that was entered into the Federal Procurement Data System (FPDS) in 2022 with a whopping $8 billion maximum possible value.

According to a DOGE post on X, that number was a typo that was corrected in the contract database to $8 million on Jan. 22 of this year before being terminated a week later, and DOGE "has always used the correct $8M in its calculations."

But for much of this week, DOGE listed the outdated $8 billion for its savings claims while linking to the termination notice with the smaller ceiling amount.

Some time Tuesday evening, the DOGE link was changed to point at the original $8 billion entry, and on Wednesday morning, the site was revised once again to show $8 million in savings — but still linked to the larger, outdated claim. The site also continues to list $55 billion in total estimated savings — the $8.5 billion in alleged contract savings and another $46.5 billion with no specifically documented source.

Spokespeople for the White House and DOGE did not respond to multiple requests for clarification about the DOGE data and savings claims shared online.

...

Just over half of the contracts touted by DOGE, accounting for $6.5 billion in alleged savings, haven't actually been terminated or closed out as of Wednesday, according to an NPR analysis of a federal government procurement database, even though the site's "wall of receipts" listed these items.

...

In all, estimated savings from the initial DOGE list of just over 500 contracts that NPR found to be cancelled runs closer to $2 billion, with roughly half coming from the gutting of the Department of Education, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Pretending they care is step one of doing something, step two is blaming liberal bureaucrats for the problem, step three is pretending they solved the problem or repeating step two depending on whether the constituent phone call is happy or angry

"I'm trying to figure out what leverage we actually have," House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said at a press briefing this month.

It is wild to see him just stand up there and admit he's got no ideas for how to deal with this situation that he's known was coming since November (and should have known was coming since the convention over the summer). Like, even if he believes there's literally nothing he can do, just straight up admitting he's useless and implicitly telling everyone to look somewhere else for resistance is an awful way to rally out supporters and keep people engaged, which is exactly what we need to be doing right now.

We've got more important things to tell people right now about things Congress and the White House are going to be attempting soon, but eventually we also really need to be connecting with Jeffries' voters and making sure they understand that this blank check for Republicans is what they voted for when they supported him in primary votes and helping them understand that the country really can't afford this kind of lazy incompetence right now.
