You may also like Bill Maher?

What a slap in the face. Maher and MAX can eat shit.

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 84 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I saw a clip of this moron for the first time a week or two ago.

The entire segment was him saying that genocide against native peoples was justified because they too had violence present in their societies. Of course, the overwhelming majority of complex life on earth include violence in their behavior repetoire.

So per this dipshit, you're morally justified in wiping out complex life.

This dude is the textbook definition of a reactionary centrist: so comfortable with his entrenched wealth that he'll gladly sell out anyone who is getting stomped by the system that he benefits from.

Bill Maher is the smug "liberal" elite that I think conservatives think all educated democrats are. He thinks he's the smartest person in the room, has consistently bad takes and just generally sucks. He is all but the definition of smug. He thinks he's George Carlin but is not

[–] Geetnerd@lemmy.world 25 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

This.

I cannot tolerate him. It's the conceited, condescending, arrogant attitude.

I loved when Bill Burr and Seth MacFarlane put him in his place.

People like Maher is why blue collar Americans hate liberals.

During my "libertarian" phase I was trying to get into him. I figured out pretty quickly that he isn't well researched and his only response to anything he disagreed with is condescension and pessimistic sarcasm.

On cable as long as you had a DVR you could skip every commercial. With streaming, ads are baked into the experience and commercials can be made unskippable. It sucks.

Gaben said 15 years ago

Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem.

You can see it here live. OP's problem is not the price but that the service is shit, and the only solution you can see in this thread is piracy.

From 2013 to 2020 I didn't have bittorrent installed anywhere, and paid for Netflix, NowTV, and Crunchyroll. Then the enshittification kicked in, and now most of what I watch is from bittorrent.

[–] b161@lemmy.blahaj.zone 43 points 2 weeks ago

God I despise that little neoliberal worm.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 42 points 2 weeks ago (6 children)

Reminds me of how when my kids finish watching a decent-quality kids show on Prime or YouTube, the algorithm will try to autoplay absolute pablum like Baby Shark, Cocomelon, or some other trash. It's like it deliberately chooses the most basic mind-numbing schlock available.

[–] Lojcs@lemm.ee 19 points 2 weeks ago

Reminds me of the time I finished watching a stick figure fight video as a kid, went to take a shower without realizing autoplay was a thing and came back to snow white hentai

[–] kandoh@reddthat.com 17 points 2 weeks ago

The algorithms prioritize things that other users spend a lot of time watching, not relevant or healthy content. Just addictive slop. It's such a major failing of our institutions that this practice hasn't been regulated away.

[–] dontpanic@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 2 weeks ago

pablum

schlock

Hey thanks, I learned 2 new words today :)

[–] MissJinx@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They rely on people getting up to take a shit after Last Week Tonight to juice those Bill Maher numbers

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Does it autoplay or something?

[–] cubism_pitta@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

In my experience, yes

To be fair I can see the leap. Bill Maher made HBO's political arm for a long time...

Now he is just a tired old dip shit (instead of just a dip shit)

Should be renamed things you may absolutely hate

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Would prefer to never have to see his eminently punchable face again, but truth's a good start I guess 🤷

I wish they'd let us hide shows like you can hide channels on YouTube

Bill went bad. He was okay until we found out what he really believes.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Even before that, I couldn't stand him tbh. He's probably one of the most smug people in the entire world.

He makes Jeremy Clarkson and pregnant women look like Keanu Reeves and Dolly Parton

It's another HBO-sponsored newstainment show focusing on politics. Don't get me wrong, fuck Bill Maher, I understand why you're bothered, but from a programming standpoint it absolutely makes sense that this would be the next aligned recommendation.

Legacy format. You should be able to fully block suggestions you're not only not interested in but that make your stomach turn. We obviously have the tech to have more sophisticated suggestions now.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You should be able to fully block suggestions you're not only not interested in but that make your stomach turn.

EXACTLY! It's like they WANT me to associate one of if not THE best show on the platform with nausea and seething resentment!

If you love Gandhi, you're gonna looove Hitler!!!

Yes! And there's no, "Thumbs Down," or, "Not Interested," option, eo you can't make him go away! Every fucking time I watch Last Week Tonight I have to see this smug dipshit's stupid face.

[–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm confused. Is it Bill Maher or just the concept of "You may also like" in general that you take exception to?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

It's Bill Maher and them continuing to try to push his stupid show after hundreds of failed attempts.

I don't really have anything against a "you may like" function that DOESN'T insist on the same bullshit recommendation for over a decade of me rejecting it..

[–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 weeks ago (9 children)

I wouldn't even credit them with that much thought. It's far more likely that it's simply "you watched late-night political comedy talk show, so here's another late night political "comedy" talk show."

I used to be a Bill Maher fan (like in my teens) his smugness was really off-putting though so I ignored them.

Religulous would have been more fun if he wasn't such a prick in it. His outro was annoying AF.

Bill Burr said he was on the side of the student protestors calling for an end to the Palestinian genocide. Then Bill Maher said (I'm paraphrasing) that it's the same as being pro-Hamas. Fuck Bill Maher.

[–] fitgse@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Turns on VPN for Brazil. yt-dlp the weekly episode. Place on Jellyfin media server. Rejoice.

The rest of the recommendations are pretty solid, though. I almost said something like the Game of Thrones doesn't fit. But right now, it really does.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago

Damn, you have a sharp eye.

[–] Aatube@kbin.melroy.org 6 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

It is the only other late-night political talk show they seem to have, to be fair.
