The person accidentally added to the group chat, which appears to contain six people, said they had no idea why they had received these messages, and shared screenshots of the chat with 404 Media. 404 Media granted the person anonymity to protect them from retaliation.

One of six will not be hard to find… I mean, what?

This shit is really pissing me off! When do I get an invite to these group chats? I feel so left out right now.

[–] Zron@lemmy.world 6 points 8 hours ago

I just wanna shitpost to the fedbois group chat.

Just start trauma dumping while they’re talking about arresting some grandma or some shit.

[–] TragicNotCute@lemmy.world 107 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

Can we take a second and appreciate the person who got these messages and took them to the media? Putting myself in their shoes, I’d be scared shitless and you can easily see how it might make you a target. Good on you random citizen, I appreciate you.

I want to know how difficult it will be for them to look back at their texts, extract the phone number, and backtrace it to the owner. Because I don't think it will be very difficult.

Exactly. This citizen’s identity is not a secret to the people in the convo. It’s a brave move and I respect the hell out of it.

[–] Wolf314159@startrek.website 10 points 11 hours ago

Yeah, I'd say they should only have shared it with the news if the news also named and identified them clearly every time the photos are shared. Corruption dies in sunlight. The dangerous ones already know, might as well hang a lantern on any attempts at retaliation.

Gotta make one wonder how often this happens

[–] fittedsyllabi@lemmy.world 13 points 10 hours ago

So Hegseth is in this too, eh?

[–] AmbitiousProcess@piefed.social 112 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

And it wasn't even Signal, an actually encrypted platform this time.

It was SMS & MMS. As in, the known to be very low security, non-encrypted protocols used for basic texting.

[–] skuzz@discuss.tchncs.de 17 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Funny the article starts with "The texts were sent to a group called “Mass Text” "

Well, duh, that's how a group MMS is represented. There is no concept of chat group names in MMS.

[–] fishos@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago

Yeah my android phone(and my coworkers iPhones) would like a word with you. Because they absolutely do use group chat names now, and one person changing it can affect everyone in the group. Ask me how I know. Maybe it's not "MMS protocol", but you're literally nitpicking over the name they reported, so fair game.

The default is to just list everyone in the chat, but that in itself is literally used as "the group name".

[–] Manifish_Destiny@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

I doubt half these cunts can even tie their own shoes.

[–] GuyFawkes@midwest.social 18 points 11 hours ago

[–] Vupware@lemmy.zip 7 points 10 hours ago

I want off Mr. Bones’ wild ride.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 40 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

But were they clear on opsec?

[–] ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip 6 points 11 hours ago

I suppose the phrase "Do not do opsec." is clear at least.

[–] aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 7 hours ago

whoever they were going after probably didn't even wear a suit.

[–] CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social 30 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

👊🇺🇸🔥

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 12 points 14 hours ago (3 children)

If I ever am invited to one of these chats, should I iust observe and document everything or keep interrupting and prevent them from doing any organizing? 🤔

[–] BremboTheFourth@piefed.ca 12 points 10 hours ago

Definitely document. You interrupt, they'll just remove you or make a new group chat and move on. Document and disseminate.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Post cat pictures immediately to the thread

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 8 hours ago

It wouldn't even give me away as not belonging!

"Uh... I'm here. I'm live. I'm not a cat."

[–] GuyFawkes@midwest.social 4 points 11 hours ago

Disrupt immediately. Now is certain; tomorrow isn’t.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 11 points 14 hours ago

I'm not sure if I could fuck up this hard if I tried.
