Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

No.

This meme type is fantastic every time it happens you take it back.

[–] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@lemmy.sdf.org 52 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yeah it's wild that Swift is still using private planes after she's been called out on it so many times

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 46 points 1 week ago (3 children)

she actually significantly cut back on usage and bought carbon credits to compensate for her excess usage since criticism :) fun fact

i just had to get ahead of the jokes as the original creator of the fossil fuel windoes 95 meme and an avid swiftie

[–] GiveOver@feddit.uk 59 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Carbon credits are bullshit, you can't put fossil fuels back in the ground.

[–] azertyfun@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The idea is theoretically viable, if you're actually paying for carbon sequestration. You emit X tons of carbon, you sequester X+Y tons of carbon (where Y > 0), that's a net win.

The problem is that no-one is doing that because it's several orders of magnitude cheaper to offer carbon credits to "save" forests that no-one was planning on cutting down. You get a clean conscience at a reasonable cost, some middlemen get richer, the planet gets warmer.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 4 points 1 week ago

good point! however no other mega celeb or ceo that flys as much as or more than taylor is buying those offsets. u gotta remember that.

Fair enough. I'm not a Swiftie but I don't particularly dislike her either other than being a billionaire. But yeah I do find it a bit disturbing how people are so ready to shit on her specifically for being a successful woman. Shit on her for being a billionaire, not a woman.

[–] AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And then everyone says "oh Gabe Newell being a billionaire is fine, Valve is such a great company" etc etc

OK, that's probably accentuated here because of all the pro-linux PC gaming people here, but still. Valve has done some pretty bad stuff too. And Gabe is out there buying yacht companies...

[–] Sammy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

All billionaires are corrupt. I don't care if they're* cute or techy, you don't get that kind of money without being a bastard.

*Edit: spelling

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Was her being a woman ever explicitly part of the 'swift takes too many unnecessary private plane flights' thing? I never really noticed that, and it's not like she takes those flights because she's female, it's mostly because of her job.

Though I suppose people wouldn't joke about Swift's hypothetical wedding if she wasn't a woman ...

[–] princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

The fact that she's a woman is being pointed out because there are at least one hundred men you could target for similar acts. I'm going to point out again what the image above says:

That's okay. Her actions are wrong. Just remember that, even among the well meaning, there is a disturbing tendency to make a woman the scapegoat, when many other candidates better fit the bill.

[–] Velypso@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Dont use her gender to defend her actions.

Her popularity among teens and young adults is the reason she was focused on, jesus christ.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

bro will literally see the sentence “her actions are wrong” and accuse the other person of “defending her actions”

some people on the internet are here to speak rather than read, and i fear you are one of them

The contortions some people wrap themselves up in to try and explain away anything that might be a bit prejudice is wild.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe -1 points 1 week ago

preeeecisely. if ur interested, this is the video where i came across this “remember the devil of environmentalism” idea https://youtu.be/7gDKbT_l2us :)

When the revolution happens some billionaires can be given 1 chance to give up most of their wealth to avoid execution.

[–] TallonMetroid@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

I mean, clearly people don't care enough about it to stop paying for her music, so why should she give a shit?

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 19 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The internet is full of endlessly recycled jokes and memes. These get posted repeatedly for years. No one cares.

I'm surprised by people who feel they need to defend Taylor Swift. You're allowed to enjoy her music. If she destroys the environment or people criticise her for it, it is not a reflection on you being a bad person for liking her music. Is this some kind of para-social relationship thing? Do people think Taylor Swift is their "friend"?

Your welcome! It's honestly wild to focus on one person's private jet usage (which is bad) in the year of 2025 where data centers are literally poisoning water supplies and creating the emissions of entire airports.

[–] KindnessisPunk@piefed.ca 33 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Honestly, private jets should be illegal given the climate crisis. Yes Tom, that does include airforce 1

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 14 points 1 week ago

furthermore most airlines should be taxed out of existence! especially flights that don’t cross the ocean, and use that money to build TRAINS

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'm gonna be real, this looks more like the sims than ai.

[–] flamingos@feddit.uk 11 points 1 week ago

AI image generators probably have a lot of Sims stuff in their training sets, tbf.

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Everyone after the first two rows all have the same bald spot on the top of their head.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

You're only reinforcing their argument further.

[–] AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (2 children)

ai image detector website that seems pretty decent in my experience:

All of the details look pretty consistent tho, idk how else you would make it for such a quick joke but i've never seen an AI image get so many small details absolutely identical before

I would guess they're just really good at photoshop and have a lot of time to throw away but I don't really know

ok nvm i found a higher quality uncropped version and now it looks a lot more ai both to me and the website

[–] BananaIsABerry@lemmy.zip 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Using AI to detect if an image is AI because you hate AI is a special breed of hypocrisy.

[–] AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I don't hate AI, I'm mostly concerned about it's impact to artists. This is an ai detector, so it's probably beneficial to artists. Ofc energy usage and whatnot is a concern too, but 2 inferences that this thing is doing is probably barely any energy usage compared to like toasting a piece of bread since it only takes a second or two to provide results

When all this tech was new I was following it very closely actually and installing a lot of local image models, but now that things have settled it seems pretty straightforwardly net negative outside of maybe DLSS. (also, the last big improvement in local image models was like a year ago, so it's not really interesting to follow anymore)

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't know how AI detectors work, seems like it would just be the more classical machine learning classification approach, but maybe not.

[–] BananaIsABerry@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

All AI is just rebranded machine learning, is it not?

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Being able to reasonably generate understandable language is an achievement. Trying to pretend it's can reason because of that is a mistake.

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 6 days ago

dis i agree with-

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

it’s so obviously ai to me without tools but hey glad you came to the same conclusion via ur own methods

[–] AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

It gives ai vibes, but I can't really point out anything specific that's off in the low quality version

And it is definitely possible to make basically the same image from photoshop

[–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 14 points 1 week ago (3 children)

What gets me more is that this image is a shitty 2022-ass AI image. Like 0 effort into making it better, prolly just “plane wedding” -> generate -> post

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I know, they didn't even do "prompt engineering"!!! 🙄

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's a shitty joke image, they didn't need to pull out the 2000 acre server farm to generate something.

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Could have just used clip art.

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I mean, an image like this could be generated locally on a 3080 in like ten seconds, using no more electricity than it takes to play a video game for a few minutes, so if anything that would suggest there's not really a climate/energy hypocrisy going on here

[–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I didn’t (mean to) talk about electricity. I was just laughing at the fact that this is a stone-age AI image.

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago

Oh yeah I know. I just thought it was a good point in light of the main idea of the post
