This is the kind of protest I like to see

Damn you can't download the video on bluesky

Naked people means lots of people will click on it, even MAGAts, and they'll see that Portland is very much not a hellhole.

[–] Jiggle_Physics@sh.itjust.works 10 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

I don't know, a lot of Maga people will see anywhere that large groups of naked people are out in public as a hell hole based on that alone.

[–] 5too@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

Some will.

But for just about everyone, it shatters the lie that the Portland streets aren't safe if people are biking naked on them.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 1 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

I thought about that too, later.

But they'd still watch it every time!

[–] Jiggle_Physics@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 hours ago

Oh course they would. As you know, heat maps of gay and trans porn consumption is about a 1:1 to a heat map of conservative voters.

I love that the administration has focused on Portland. It's such a beautiful city with such an amazing vibe, portraying it as anything other than a bougied up giant village feels just wrong. The whole narrative about hellhole falls apart after five minutes on the ground.

[–] masinko@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

The same thing with the "LA has burned to the ground, we're sending the national guards". Most of the protests and the "rioting" were happening in a 5-6 block area, the rest of LA was business as usual.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago (6 children)

I don’t even live in the US and have never visited Portland and I even know that Faux News and the Trumpanzee are trying to paint a deceptive picture of the city. How fucking dumb are some of these Americans to believe that shit.

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 hours ago

Really fucking dumb.

They’re told day after day for hours on end that all cities are dangerous shitholes. It’s part of the right wing propaganda to keep this a cultural war instead of the class war is should be.

It could also be a setup to treat city dwellers as other than human because they tend to be Democrats.

[–] AntEater@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 8 hours ago

How fucking dumb are some of these Americans to believe that shit.

I've lived here most of my life and knew it was bad but had no idea just how bad it was until Trump 1.0. Then covid-19 happened and it was a real eye opener for many of us. Now it's not just willful ignorance but a deep-seated dedication to remaining ignorant at all costs.

How fucking dumb are some of these Americans to believe that shit.

You see where we're at now...

[–] manxu@piefed.social 31 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Don't judge them too harshly. If everybody surrounding you starts talking about how Portland turned into a shithole, you'd start eventually believing it, too. I know people that live 20 km South of San Francisco, who claimed they would not come see me in town when I was visiting because it was too dangerous. They were baffled not only that I walked everywhere, but that I survived the ordeal unscathed.

Propaganda is strangely powerful. I still remember the run-up to the Iraq War, when Bush et al. were talking about weapons of mass destruction and everybody believed them. I thought to myself: if the Iranians are not concerned about Iraqi WMDs, and they are sworm enemies and right next to each other, why should anyone else be?

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 3 points 13 hours ago

A similar thing is how if you listen to anyone from the Inland Empire talk about LA it will sound like it's a toxic waste site. In reality we just don't like their attitude and also fuck LA traffic. We don't have anywhere to squirm on crime, ever been to San Bernardino or West Highland?

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

It's easy to believe someone who tells you what you want to hear.

[–] WEFshill202@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Including the president, king of dumb.

[–] venusaur@lemmy.world 38 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Haha I’m sure these misogynistic assholes didn’t mind the tits. Maybe liked the penis too.

[–] tal@olio.cafe 52 points 1 day ago (3 children)

My kneejerk reaction was "it's not going to do much" too, but I've kind of mulled it over and I'm kind of inclined to feel more charitable towards the Portland stuff.

What did the Trump administration want when it was sending National Guard out? Images of conflict, material that they could use to show that there was some dire threat and dangerous criminality that the administration was handling. They got footage of a frog air-humping and some nude bicyclists that's basically useless for that.

Looking at Fox News's front page, they have:

  • Emergency flights diverted from Portland hospital amid 'laser party' threats at ICE facility: report

and

  • Portland mayor orders removal of police tape despite federal demand for perimeter at ICE facility, report says

Which I think even the most die-hard MAGA fan is going to have a hard time getting too worked up over.

And it did accomplish some of the goals that a protest in that it helped build make visible that there were people who did object to what was going on.

I'm not sure that it was the absolute, optimal thing to do, but it might have been reasonably-canny.

[–] einlander@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Also they can't say naked people were threatening them.

[–] IamSparticles@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"He was pointing something at me, your honor. I couldn't be sure it wasn't a weapon."

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 4 points 13 hours ago

"Your honor he was packing heat! No he didn't have a gun."

[–] teawrecks@sopuli.xyz 43 points 1 day ago

I've been waiting for this moment for years. I knew that when Oregonians got serious about protesting trump, it would be a bunch of geared up military vs a bunch of naked unicyclers. And you just can't sell that as threatening.

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

On the one hand I think you could be right, but on the other hand, the average maga idiot has thought of portland as being “burnt to the ground” and non stop rioting for the last 5 years. Which makes no sense obviously. I dont think they will be rationalizing themselves out of a position that was irrational to begin with

[–] UltraMagnus@startrek.website 2 points 1 day ago

Well, any event could be "the straw that breaks the camels back" for someone who is apathetic about politics or supports trump. No single protest or action is going to cause millions of people to suddenly flip, it's going to be more like a slow trickle.

(Of course, you can argue all day about it not being quick enough, or it not accomplishing its goals in time, but it's not like other methods would be particularly faster)

[–] fittedsyllabi@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What are they doing? Trying to give DJT a boner?

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 30 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Making the idea that the city is a violent hellhole look absurd in a way that gets a lot of attention.
