[–] SirMaple__@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

i hate reddit too but we cant scoff at the amount of info it holds

[–] Catalyst_A@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 day ago

I have the continuum client literally only to view articles. I don't post, comment or otherwise participate. A lot of research I do keeps returning Reddit threads and I just need the safest way to view them. Otherwise I'm blocked for my security measures.

Yup. If you really need to check something on there, there is an extension for your browser (Chrome and Firefox) that will redirect you to an alternative privacy-friendly frontend. https://libredirect.github.io/

this is amazing ty

[–] TheGiantKorean@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

This extension is great! Thank you.

i agree with this but you cant deny the amount of info on reddit. glad someone posted the re-direct cuz as much as i hate it, its a valuable tool

[–] NKBTN@feddit.uk 10 points 1 day ago

Sometimes it's the only decent search result

[–] Zerush@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago

Short answer: Yes

[–] specialwall@midwest.social 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Yes. I've noticed this is a lot more common for Mullvad than for ProtonVPN servers.

[–] Catalyst_A@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 hours ago

because Mullvad is a real G and they know it.

[–] gravitywell@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Interestingly, while they do block vpns, they don't seem to be able to block the libred instance I run on the same IP address as my VPN.

[–] lumen@feddit.nl 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, that’s because libred looks like an Android mobile app to Reddit. Content doesn’t get blocked of on there, no matter what your IP address is.

i noticed i was able to use my vpn on my phone with graphene os and had no issues connecting, only from my PC

[–] Tm12@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Is there any way to auto-URL replace within a browser? ie Searching leads to a reddit thread, open on libred.

[–] gravitywell@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Yes there is!

https://libredirect.github.io/

Its a bit of extra work to get on some chrome based browsers but it works great once you have it set.

If you use the browser extension on Firefox it will do this automatically.

I think the main intention here is to block the bots. Reddit blocks requests coming from certain IPs associated with VPS and similar commercial providers. VPN services often rent exit servers there. My connection is blocked when it goes through Tailscale exit node hosted on a VPS.

You can use Tor to browse Reddit anonymously, there is even a .onion address

[–] No_Bark@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

I get this issue about 60% of the time I click on a reddit link with ProtonVPN. Though for some reason this week I've had no issues, but the past month I kept needing to server hop.

[–] zdhzm2pgp@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 day ago
[–] _deleted_@aussie.zone 6 points 1 day ago

It would seem so, I also haven’t been able to use Reddit on VPN.

[–] brainscan@piefed.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Same here with ProtonVPN

[–] Kirk@startrek.website 4 points 1 day ago

Sometimes yes in my experience, but mostly it works fine. I suspect it's a game of whack-a-mole with VPN companies constantly rotating IPs.

[–] limer@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think Reddit’s onion site still works.

If you use tor, the browser will suggest the site when you get on a Reddit page, at least using old Reddit, if you don’t have the suggestions turned off in settings ( by default they are on)

I have not used Reddit it in two years , but it used to work ok in tor onion URL

new reddit also has a .onion

It won't happen if you are logged in, but it's very likely that your account will be shadowbanned eventually.

[–] Confidant6198@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nah, I use VPN 24/7 and my account is still poping 10k likes on posts

They'll get you eventually. I wasn't doing anything bad, never got into trouble, never spammed, etc. I was active in small Linux subs, helping people. One day, I was simply shadowbanned. Only thing I can think of is the use of a VPN.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Change the VPN location.

The point of having a VPN is to use many locations.

[–] nfreak@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I've generally had good luck doing this. They do blanket ban the majority of big VPN data centers, but jumping around a bit for a minute usually gets around this.

Though tbh my plan for today is to wipe and delete my account and set up Redlib.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You can't log in via redlib, IIRC. It is great just to read, though. I used it all the time.

[–] nfreak@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago

Oh yeah I know. It's for the best to stop interacting with that cesspit so I have no problem going read-only lmao

[–] Telorand@reddthat.com 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That won't matter. VPNs typically use a known set of IPs, and services like Reddit that are run by surveillance capitalism companies simply block those known ranges (see also YouTube, for example).

[–] Xylarthen@kbin.earth 2 points 1 day ago

i tend to have pretty good luck swapping around with mullvad. eventually there's always one that works

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

Then explain why if I get this error, I switch locations and don't get it. I've been dodging this for 2 years.

VPN blacklists are chasing a moving target. Only truly bad VPNs with few exit servers and IPs would manage to get fully blocked across any location.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yep they block mullvad. Good riddance I say (to reddit. Its all bots anyways)

ya i use mullvad and i get blocked every time. i refuse to make an account so im so glad someone had posted that re-direct cuz the amount of info on reddit is unfortunately, unmatched

[–] HiddenLayer555@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago

The absolute irony of a site so infested by bots blocking VPNs.

Wonder how many VPS provider IPs they get from their "users"

[–] bowreality@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don’t have any issues. I always have VPN on and I can access Reddit without issues.

[–] Confidant6198@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Which one do you use?

[–] mistermodal@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

libredirect.github.io

Yup, this site is very familiär tot me since i got a VPN

[–] RheumatoidArthritis@mander.xyz 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yes. Interestingly, they don't block tor, so you can use tor browser and not need to disconnect from your vpn.

To get around this and not disconnect your VPN, search for the page you are looking for with startpage then open the link with the "view annonymous" option and it'll open it via a proxy.
