A simple reminder of the incompetence, idiocy, and insanity that was the Trump presidency. Here's the original story, in case you forgot:

The funny thing is that NOAA and NWS are part of the Department of Commerce, the department that directly works with businesses to ensure that goods and services can plan for the weather. They track ocean currents, wind patterns, and yes temperature changes.

The accuracy of their models have become so good that we have pretty darn good forecasting now.

All so that Walmart can buy shovels in time for the next snow storm.

Yet they want to do a way with the agency because climate change is now a woke issue.

Talk about biting off your nose to spit at your opponent.

Not only them, but the FAA does too…

[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 15 points 7 months ago

And the military. And everyone who enjoys a heads up about a tornado before it can kill you. Or the flood.

Biting off your own nose? What???

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 7 months ago (2 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutting_off_one%27s_nose_to_spite_one%27s_face?wprov=sfla1

I've always heard it as "Cut off your own nose to spit in someone's face".

Basically it means you are willing to hurt yourself just to be able to make your enemy miserable.

[–] criitz@reddthat.com 12 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Ive always heard "cutting off your nose to spite your face"

[–] lewdian69@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

Because that's what the actual phrase is. Biting off your nose makes no sense, nor does then spitting in someone else's face.

[–] YarHarSuperstar@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

Oh right. I was just surprised how vivid the imagery was lol

Weather app companies want the information privatized in order to sell the data and subscriptions.

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/who-benefits-from-the-privatization-of-weather-data

Eliminating analysis of climate change is only a side benefit. There's money to be made.

[–] NineMileTower@lemmy.world 34 points 7 months ago (2 children)

That's untrue, because he won't need a Sharpie anymore. They will just be reporting whatever Trump wants them to report. There is no hurricane. Here's some paper towel. This will all blow over by Easter.

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 9 points 7 months ago

Of course there's no hurricane. Trump personally nuked it. In unrelated news, all US nukes are henceforth required to have a pussy for trump to grab them by.

All the competent people would be fired, so it wouldn't be accurate regardless. Everything these agencies say will just be Dear Leader propaganda.

[–] Freefall@lemmy.world 34 points 7 months ago (1 children)

To be completely fair....they likely have zero idea what NOAA is and they certainly hate and fear the unknown.

Shout-out to when Rick Perry wanted to abolish the department of energy, not knowing it's responsible for maintaining our nations nuclear weapons, international treaty monitoring for nukes, and nuclear waste management and cleanup.

Texas man think government energy bad. Must abolish.

So hurricanes are too woke now? Keeping track of hurricanes is too liberal for them? What the fuck.

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 12 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Hurricanes insulted their god emperor by obeying physics. Physics is woke.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 4 points 7 months ago

If science is woke then woke me the fuck up on that science.

Dismantling the entire noaa because they made a "non-binary" hurricane is like that type of thing the Google ai would come up with. Pack it up Lemmy Shitpost, we've been outdone yet again.

Can't have a weather forecasting agency disabuse people of the notion that gays cause hurricanes.

[–] Asafum@feddit.nl 23 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

They want to hand that over to private AccuWeather. They already had the CEO in Trump's administration.

[–] riskable@programming.dev 17 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Jokes on them then: AccuWeather wouldn't exist without NOAA since that's where they get almost all their weather data.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 16 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Privatizing NOAA and selling it off to AccuWeather for a song, so that AccuWeather can then sell the data back at a hefty profit, is how you make oodles of money in this country.

[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago

And is actually pretty on par for a Facist government

[–] lurch@sh.itjust.works 21 points 7 months ago

Yeah just you wait until he sharpie circles near your home town and suggests nuking the hurrican again 😱

[–] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 19 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Thank the good lawd none of them hurricanes hit the south. - Cletus Jackson Local Dirt farmer

[–] NineMileTower@lemmy.world 18 points 7 months ago

"Down with socialism, but lemme get some of dat sweet federal aid because it's wet as fuck down here"

[–] takeda@lemmy.world 10 points 7 months ago (2 children)

The whole thing about the sharpie makes one wonder what is dumber, the suggestion itself or the base that would believe it.

The reason why the circles are growing is to show uncertainty where the hurricane might go. The sharpie drawing shows that whomever drew it completely misunderstood what the map was showing.

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 8 points 7 months ago

If I remember correctly the sharpie map was because Trump tweeted that Alabama was going to be affected and then after people called NOAA and they said Alabama was fine, Trump instead of admitting his mistake, repeated on Twitter that he was correct culminating in a press conference where he presented an official NOAA map that had sharpie drawn into Alabama.

[–] PenisWenisGenius@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

If we ban the agency that manufacturers all the hurricanes, maybe hurricanes won't happen anymore. Hurricanes cause destruction to property and are a waste of taxpayer dollars especially when noaa scientists make 2 or 3 of them happen per year. /s

[–] PhlubbaDubba@lemm.ee 8 points 7 months ago

Are we able to say Simpsons predicted the Republican Party mostly just being a gaggle of the most despicable sorts of people congregating mostly out of spite for the decent morally upright society the rest of us try to participate in?

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 6 points 7 months ago

Yes, because billionaires don't own any sort of ocean going vessel

[–] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world -5 points 7 months ago

This is a very popular idea in Texas right now....home of the most democratic Democrats I think.
