All of which cost more than a 100000 dollars but were still somehow bought on a whim for that one experiment that one time...

[–] skillissuer@discuss.tchncs.de 21 points 2 months ago

and then it becomes impossible to get money for periodic maintenance

You forgot this beige box where the real magic happens.

Michael, stop playing Oregon Trail in the lab.

[–] Midnitte@beehaw.org 19 points 2 months ago

Hey, sometimes we also have glass boxes or boxes with screens on them where the magic happens too.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago (2 children)

My favorite part is when the magic happens.

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 9 points 2 months ago

Smell that?

Fuck guess the fume hood isn't working

[–] skillissuer@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 2 months ago

magic happens only once, when you don't know how it was made to work, it's your best result and then it's impossible to repeat it

OK but do they go beep boop, or brrr, or pfffh, or eeeiiigh?

[–] jabathekek@sopuli.xyz 21 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Most of them have programmable sounds so the researchers can more easily impress people and get more grants.

[–] Wrufieotnak@feddit.org 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Programmable? Look at rich guy over here!

In our lab all machines apparently use the same sound chip. So when you heard the beep, you had to check if it was the dish washer, the centrifuge, the oven or the automatic water measuring scale.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

everyone should set their phone notifications to the same sound for maximum insanity, call it an experiment

[–] Wrufieotnak@feddit.org 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I see you majored in mad science.

Now I want to know why the material has its color like it does. Anyone?

[–] n0clue@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Because that's the color of undyed plastic.

[–] weker01@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

I could be very wrong but it looks to be the same color as old computer cases. These got their color from a study by the German government which color would work best in an office environment. It was then written into health standards for the use in office environments for a time.

"And just what is it that happens inside the box?"
"Quantum yeets!"
