I'd like to add as I wait for my t1000e in the mail (ordered today lol), that for things like festivals or parks where it isn't an emergency, meshtastic seems better imo.

Better than FRS simply because I don't always want VOX, maybe it's a music festival and I can't hear the radio so good, maybe I don't want to need headphones for "private" comms (encoding speech or encrypting traffic is illegal on FRS, so by private here I mean not overheard by the guy next to me, anyone else with an FRS radio can hear too by default), better than GMRS because no $70 license in addition to the FRS issues, better than 2m/70cm for the same reasons but the license is $15+test, and add in GPS to more easily track the other nodes instead of "I'm over by the porta potties, where are you?" You can just follow the map/arrow! Speaking of not hearing, I'm an old man now, my hearing is already shit from years of punk shows in basements without earpro, and now I use it, so with VOX I have to choose my earpro or the comms (or use quad ops-cores lmao), with meshtastic I don't have to choose. Meshtastic is also cheaper even if we're not talking opscore, you can probably get a set of cheap FRS radios from walmart for equivalent/cheaper, but then you have the problems of FRS plus shitty radios and I'm using the baofeng on it illegally, meshtastic wins again.

Imo, in an emergency it's best to have both, in a non emergency I'm reaching for the meshtastic before the baofeng, except at work where FRS is the standard.

Cool thanks, I think I'll try the combo of that and the t114, I think that'll get me everything, but if not then hopefully it'll be fixed soon. Plus there may not even be any near me, and if I can get people who aren't nerds like me into this it'll be with the t1000e probably, not the t-beam, and that's more important than strangers.

Alright I'm sold, placing the order now, thanks again!

Hey I hate to come back and sorta necro this thread lol but I'd feel worse starting a new thread two days in a row haha. I had a quick question for you though if that's ok!

So I was looking at this t1000e, and I want one as they look like a slick little package to get started with. However it has come to my attention that they are unable to rx from SX1276 radios (like the lilygo t-beam) due to a bug when syncword 0x2b is used. The bug seems to be being worked on but it seems "Word on discord is we got a new contact with Semtech and are discussing this." (Dec 14 2024).

With that in mind, would you say wait until the bug is fixed or go for it today? What are the more popular chips, would I be locking myself out of a significant portion of the existing community (assuming there is one nearby) or are most people still using the SX1262 which works fine with the L1110 both ways? I'm assuming the bug will be fixed soon enough, but who knows when that is. I suppose a temporary workaround could be to get one of these and then one of the t114v2s with an SX1262, and then as long as I have both nearby the messages will get forwarded from the 1276 to the 1262 to the L1110, right?

Thanks again for all your help!

Hey look, it's me! I saw my comment got removed and laughed "of course that tankie shit was from .ml" I said again. Considered posting it here actually but was too lazy, thanks for doing it for me in conjunction with the other ones!

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

That's crazy! Their thumbless paws would never be able to aim, rack a charging handle, etc!

Maybe they can reach the trigger with the claws though if they have a winter trigger guard.

The tankie handbook.

Rufus.

And who cares if there's spyware on windows, you're already using windows so there is, it's windows. At that point you may as well just use etcher, but I'd use Rufus anyway because let's be real it's just better. The only reason not to use Rufus is because it's windows exclusive, but if you're using windows that probably doesn't bother you, so...

Cool yeah so if I don't go anywhere for a weekend or so I'll probably need to give it a little extra juice just to top it off on monday while I'm at work, but with the impressive battery life it'd hold mostly, that I can do! I'll probably pick up 3 devices, at least one of these and at least one t114 v2 (two of one, one of the other, which is which is undecided lol).

That's just to start though! I'm keeping my eye on the t-deck and I'm sure more like it will come out too!

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Thanks for showing me the G2 and sensecap indicator, these things look pretty neat! I'll definitely be looking at those once I'm a bit more into it, for now I'm thinking about a t1000-e and maybe a couple t114 v2s (or maybe a couple t1000-es and one t114 v2, who knows! Lol). I do like how pocket sized the t1000-e is but I worry about the non-upgradable nature (antenna, battery), but then someone here said they hit a repeater with it 4mi away! I'm sure that repeater is up in a tower or something to get that range, but still, hitting it with an internal antenna like that is damn impressive, so it may be fine!

As for the indicator being standalone I'm not sure it's the one for me in that particular application, I'm basically looking for a blackberry or even nokia 3310 lol, with no SIM/CDMA radio and a LoRa radio instead (and GPS, full functionality of a meshtastic device ykwim), and I can use it to send/read messages directly like texting. A boy can dream!

I do drive at least 1h daily, 30 in the am and 30 otw home, might mostly cover me! There's also wall outlets about too and I intend to look into those solar foldable thingys since if the power goes out I'll still need it. I do also have one of those backup battery things collecting dust somewhere, I'll have to find it that's a good idea!

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago (8 children)

Three or four days is already pretty good, but I imagine I'll need the gps to use it as a tracker so I'm sure it won't be quite that.

Now that I think about it, who cares? It'd be cigarette lighter powered anyway! Man the possibilities with these are endless!

Hello lemmy's !music consortium. I was wondering if anyone could help me with this song, and being that it's lemmy, I'm assuming "probably." I've been looking for this song since Metro 2033 (game) came out, and I finally found it just now! It's sung by a guard right before you watch how Unkle Bourbon "works." (I had already found Гоп Стоп by Aleksander Rosenbaum). I didn't know where else to post this, being that it is music I came here, hope that's ok.

Now the issue is I'm a little lost on the historical context, and I was hoping one of the .mls out there who may have a bit more knowledge of the russian civil war could shed some light on it because to be frank I know nothing about it.

It seems to be a Cossack song, and anti Bolshevik? I translated the ru.wiki.whatever page and it seems to suggest the writers are a couple of punks with cool ass nicknames like "solid" and "not good" that pulled lyrics from a couple historical tunes, and that there was a 4th verse in the OG that is now oft omitted much to the chagrin of those authors, who call it "white guard pink snot" or something, what the hell does that mean?! Is the song supposed to be just generally anti-communist or is it...well...idk, really any insight into this tune would be much appreciated. Like I said I don't know much, I basically know the "reds" are the Bolsheviks and that's it.

Anyone else having an issue where they have to resubscribe to a community every time the app closes? For some reason in eternity it keeps unsubbing me from !c/comicbooks@lemmy.world every time the app restarts itself, and I have to go resubscribe. None of this actually affects my account, I guess, because when I sign in with other apps I'm still subbed to it, eternity just removes it from my subs on boot and won't show the content in my subscriptions feed. Is there any way to fix this?

I'm having an issue trying to burn a music CD for use in my (very old, I know I know) car. I'm running FedoraKDE (40) and Brasero, a Liteon brand external optical DVDRW drive, CD-R (TDK brand), and a Framework 16.

The issue I'm having seems to be that the blank disks(maybe?) aren't recognized automatically by Fedora, when I pop a full commercially released CD in it'll play/rip, but with a blank disk nothing happens, and I don't know where to "save" the "image" of this album I'm creating in Brasero to get it on the disk.

Someone on a random linux forum told some other guy to run cdrecord -checkdrive which says my drive is at /dev/sr0 with a blank disk, but that's as far as I've gotten. Do I choose sr0 as the place to save it? It says "something something overwrite" when I try which makes me wary, it seems it wants to overwrite "sr0" itself and either bork my drive or install, but maybe?

I'm positive it's just something simple I'm missing, any help would be greatly appreciated and I can answer questions and run commands if needed (but I don't actually have WIFI rn, so I'll have to have the package for said command already.)

Thanks in advance.

Hey I figured I'd make a post and see the state of current lemmy appage, since I'm looking for a good one. So far I've used Jerboa, Thunder, Eternity, and Voyager.

Eternity seems to be a dead project, it's full of bugs and hasn't recieved an update since The Exodus

Thunder seems ok and is what I'm using right now, but I can't seem to send direct messages, and can't "Don't blur NSFW preview on NSFW comms" which sucks. The messaging is the dealbreaker for me.

Voyager I used momentarily but the UI was not my favorite.

Jerboa seems OK if unpolished (which is ok to me) but I don't trust the rabid idealogue that makes it and using another instance of his site is one thing, but installing an app is another. Has it been audited to confirm lack of spyware?

Ideally through this I can find one with instance blocking, DMs, and a decent UI. What're your experiences with the current state of lemmy apps?

Is there a way to log all the stuff on start up to a text file so I can read it? It goes by way too fast! Mine shows some blue warnings but I can't read them.

To be clear I mean the part that explains what is starting or failing, like if you hit [ESC] during start up or don't have plymouth, not the plymouth splash screens.

What do y'all like? Get as granular and varied into genres as you want!

To start, I like: Punk, HxC, D-beat, d-trakt, metal, grindcore, sludge, stonermetal, jungle dnb, hardstyle, hardbass, pre-00 country, americana, blues, jazz, western, noise, anti-music, -gaze both shoe and zoomer, and many more!

If I start posting weird shit in here like Julie, or Vince Gill, or Ernest Tubb lmao, will y'all run me out of town or are y'all cool?

This week's list is up! Let's see..

Lester of the Lesser Gods #1 - Sounds interesting enough,

"Lester, the larping bastard son of the Odin, wanders the post-apocalyptic wasteland after thwarting Satan’s attempt to bring about the end of days. But can this hero of the downtrodden survive the battle arena of Will Frye the Technomancer Guy."

Minor Threats II The Fastest Way Down #2 - I'm all in on Minor Threats, Patton Oswalt done did it again.

Rook Exodus #1 - Damn man all in the same week? Can we stagger these?!

Sacrificers #7 - New arc, probably most excited about this one this week, or tied with Minor Threats.

Deadpool #1 - I did read all of Deadpool Vs Cable back in the day, maybe I pick this up.
