For YouTube on android you can also use grayjay or revanced to set subscriptions as your home page!

(This is about a section in the video, not just a random non-sequitur ๐Ÿ˜…)

Its in alpha, of course its a mess ๐Ÿ˜…

My experiences with pop haven't been amazing (just always ran into small quirks and issues that shouldnt be a thing, but I haven't messed with it all that much), but I'm pretty happy for there to be another big polished desktop environment with resources behind it, I think it makes the linux ecosystem better :)

I've done this with my pixelfed/Mastodon to post on lemmy for easier image hosting. I still can't get over how cool it is that you can essentially "post to 'reddit' from your 'twitter' or 'instagram'"

the Fediverse is fuckin neat lol

That's pretty neat, I wish they had some pictures

To piggyback off someone else's idea, Technology Connections has some neat videos on passive thermal management of his house through things like blinds, awnings, and paying for power intentionally at off-peak hours, that are kinda solar punk

I wish I could remember more of the strategies he talked about, but reducing your energy load and improving power efficiency leaves more energy for other people and things :)

I think that's a fairly solarpunk idea

A countertop composter to reduce waste would be another idea, and could help you grow things like herbs if you want an application for your compost

Thank you for the additional context, I've heard peoples criticisms of substack but hadn't heard any of this additional info

Ghost still seems cool though :)

There's a Foss dating app called alovoa, I think I saw something on the subreddit when I was taking a look at it again a while back about potentially implementing activitypub

Neat!! Thanks for sharing ๐Ÿ˜Š

If possible it'd probably be ideal to delete all user posts and lock it with a post directing people to the new home, but leave it up for a while so people have a chance to learn where it went :)

Dunno if that's possible with Friendica, but I'm excited to join the new community, I wasn't previously aware of it!

I feel like there might be other comms to crosspost this to but couldn't think of any, feel free to crosspost if you can!

I have a friend who I recently learned is looking to switch to Linux and I offered to help, since I've been using Linux for ages. I'm not the most technical user, but in some ways I think that makes me uniquely well suited to be a new person's guide, and I'm pretty familiar with the install and setup process sans one big thing, proprietary graphics drivers, I've generally always been installing Linux on a laptop it an integrated gpu

They let me know they have an nvidia graphics card, I think 30 series if I remember right, we don't know what DE or distro might be a good fit for them and I told them we'd start by test driving a few, see what they thought of the interfaces, and pick a distro from there

Can you boot and use the OS without installing the proprietary drivers, or do you need to install them via like tty or something? I know nvidia started open sourcing their drivers and some amount is in the kernel now, I assume proprietary drivers are still optimal, if not explicitly necessary?

Any and all advice is welcome, it's kinda hard to research something this general and get a sense for what the big picture looks like

Thank you!

This is a cross-post from the map enthusiasts comm :)

The only one I found by searching is way out of date and doesn't seem to work. But it feels like there's got to be one out there somewhere

If you're reading this I hope you're having a lovely day :)

If you go to !videos@lemmy.world and scroll you'll see some of the posts have a youtube thumbnail image, but not all.

I wanna post YouTube videos, but no one seems to engage much without a thumbnail, which makes sense, but I'm not sure what would result in the post actually having a thumbnail

If anyone has advice or guidance I'd appreciate it :) Thanks!

EDIT: so far it seems like it's potentially a combination of what version of lemmy the posters account is running, and how that instance is configured...

I see literally nothing but memes and tweet screenshots. An overview of what happened would really help fill me in
