You love to see it.

De-dollarization can't happen fast enough, as the dollar is one of the pillars of US power. Good thing countries are banding together to make it a priority.

You mean the power cost of a computer idling at home?

I have 5 computers (beelink and nuc servers) at home rn, each idles at ~6 watts. That's about 40 usd a year. One computer would be 8.5 usd per year.

This is the first post I've ever seen that's gotten twitter-style ratio'd. There are more comments than votes.

If you're able to code from a terminal, and care about longer battery life (my main concern when working from a coffee shop or elsewhere), I'd recommend getting a used android tablet, pry something from xiaomi or oneplus. You can find a decent model used for around that price with > 8 hour battery life easily.

Get a good stand, a solid bluetooth keyboard (logitech makes some great portable ones), and put termux on it (can probably handle light python locally).

If you need it to do CPU powerful tasks, use termux to remote into a VPS or your home server, and let a plugged in linux machine do the work so you can save your device's battery life. This is how I code at least.

Funny, when indigenous peoples from the americas asked that question, the US settlers just killed them.

Are you really doing a "reverse ethnic cleansing" rn? Lord free me from redditors.

[–] dessalines@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 days ago

where it is okay for one ethnic group to systemically displace another

Ah the old "reverse ethnic cleansing"... all you white supremacists are coming out to play.

The absolute gall of westerners whose ancestors literally did ethnic cleansing, to then yell that at their victims at the hint of returning stolen land back to indigenous sovereignty.

Step 1: Steal something.

Step 2: Give it to your kid.

Step 3: The kid whines finders keepers, and that they shouldn't have to give it back.

Diseases did not conquer hundreds of tribes. The history of the new world is a one of campaigns of war and conquest against indigenous peoples. The fact that many are ignorant of this history is part of the whitewashing project. I linked some audiobooks below so you can learn this history.

If the nazis won, they would teach you about the shoah in exactly the same way western nations teach you about the colonization of the americas.

But nobody is talking about ethnic cleansing.

Reclaiming stolen land is not ethnic cleansing.

And also that much more territory should be transferred back to the reserves.

Correct and it leads to a simple question: If the tribal governments decide that all land claims and titles in the county upon which your house resides are null and void, they're beginning a land reclamation project, current title holders have no rights to the land, what are you going to do? Fight them? Claim ethnic cleansing? It's their land, not yours.

This was a busy month, with ~80 pull requests merged, as we're trying to get all the breaking changes we can added before the 1.0 release.

The release is still several months away, as even after finishing up the rest of the 1.0 milestone issues, we still have to add this new functionality to Lemmy-UI and Jerboa, and do extensive testing.

Here are some of the major changes made over the past month:

  • Added multi-communities (One of the most requested features).
  • Added a new rate limiting library.
  • Refactored the API structs and library for better usage in Rust projects.
  • Improved the migration diff checker.
  • Using an external library for checking invisible characters.
  • Votes are now removed when banning + removing data.
  • Added a GDPR style data export.
  • Storing upvote / downvote totals you gave to each user, and a setting to display that history next to their name.
  • Added ability to make a note for a user.
  • Added an RSS feed for modlogs.
  • Added an API action to get liked / disliked content.

An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and Nutomic work full-time on these tasks and more. As there is no advertising or tracking, all of our work is funded through donations. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. The only available option are user donations. To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. If that goal is reached we can stop worrying about money, and fully focus on improving the software for the benefit of all users and instances. We especially rely on recurring donations to secure the long-term development and make Lemmy the best it can be.
