One of the few things I go back to the old site for is /r/eatcheapandhealthy - you need the time to make the food, but you can make very little cash go a long way, especially if you’re buying beans/lentils/oats dried and soaking them overnight rather than buying canned.

China states that eating food reduces symptoms of starvation

WELL I GUESS AS A DEMOCRAT I MUST ABSTAIN FROM ALL FOOD TO PROVE THEM WRONG

My gut reaction would be “actions still have consequences motherfucker”, but my gut would also be to immediately remove this person from ever interacting with me again.

Sometimes, the results of something you do don’t quite match your intentions. Mistakes happen, miscommunications happen. A genuine person would respond “oh fuck, that is NOT how I meant that”, and apologize. A gaslighter does the above.

That’s an awful lot of words to say it’s a backdoor that could, plausibly, have been installed unintentionally, but is still very much a backdoor.

there is no coal plant incident even remotely theoretically possible that can render massive regions inhospitable for centuries

If you ignore the incident we’ve all been watching slowly unfold for centuries with our thumbs up our asses, and oil spills to a lesser extent, sure

Including disasters like Chernobyl, nuclear energy causes several magnitudes less deaths than fossil fuels. It is utterly fucking insane for the concern to be “the horrors” of the three meltdowns you’re thinking of, of which the only one to kill or injure any civilians was Chernobyl. Fukushima did have some workers undergo significantly higher than usual radioactive doses - I invite you to contrast this with the mortality rate of, say, working on an oil rig.

Fossil fuels are killing this planet before your very eyes. I am thrilled by the progress renewables are making, and small scale nuclear is quite likely the only new nuclear we would benefit from constructing these days. But we could have saved an ungodly amount of fossil fuels being burned and thus lives if it wasn’t for this argument.

The value of those “real goods” is typically just as fake as the value of fiat currencies anyways. Trying to use things with actual usefulness as money has its own issues too.

It will never not be fucking hilarious to me that one of the most holier-than-thou textbook american white moderate liberal people I know works at xitter.

Making something to make humans suffer is still making it for humans

It’s just very amusing from the outside to observe a fervent and dedicated community insisting a thousands of years old game’s wonky design choices make sense for a dozen different reasons. Gamers really never change.

One of the most interesting details about the Nuremberg trials, which I only learned from the ever excellent Robert Evans on a podcast, is the controversy over how many of the crimes Nazis were executed weren’t really “crimes” - international law wasn’t really a thing, and they weren’t really illegal under German law.

Yet we hung the Nazis anyways, because they were the fuckin’ Nazis. I find this a comforting thought in these times.

If you’re in need of additional fortification, the article on John Clarence Woods might help, the hangman who very incompetently and thus painfully executed nazi leadership - there is also a Behind the Bastards on him, possibly the one that discusses the trials iirc.
