Holy fucking AI nothing article batman.

What type of mindless sheeple G*mer would read this article and think "Quality games journalism here"

Opens thread

You continue to disappoint me lemmites.

[–] darksiderbun@lemmy.ca 2 points 9 hours ago

I actually really don’t mind World. It’s a different game than 8 Deluxe but honestly I was grinning like a kid when I discovered the free roam mode. I also like the track connectors. Different strokes I guess 🤷I find it pretty charming of a game! I think the open world part might also be good for different speedrunning challenges. Lastly, Nintendo sucks boooo! Be a kinder company!

I'm sure this will die down pretty quickly like every other gamer "controversy" or "massive backlash", but all power to the no-lifers who live for this neverending cycle of anti-game developer ragebait.

[–] Phelpssan@lemmy.world 34 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This controversy is pretty much "You're having fun in a different way from what we intended. This is not allowed so we blocked it.".

Which is a very "Nintendo" thing to do. But hopefully they'll change things in the future and give a "classic" option or something similar.

[–] semperverus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

From a gamedev perspective it wouldn't make sense to call what was happening "classic". It was unintended behavior.

What would make more sense would be to make a setting to allow or disable the intermission sections of the race (they'd need to think of another name for them though because they call the wait time between races intermissions in the settings already). Allow players to keep or remove the long stretches.

[–] Phelpssan@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

What I meant by "classic" is an "official" option to stick to 3-lap tracks, which apparently have a lot of fans.

Not a great article. Lots of leaning on emotions with little to actually say.

[–] Hawk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The whole part about no review bombing on Steam made no sense

[–] MelodiousFunk@slrpnk.net 17 points 1 day ago

The entire site looks to be slop.

[–] blargbluuk@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The article reads like it was put together by an LLM then edited (poorly) by a person.

[–] nomy@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

Wait a second, you mean "gamersplan.com" isn't a reputable, well-researched paragon of journalistic integrity? I'm shocked.

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 31 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I must say, even though I don't play much online, the lack of a traditional 3 lap grand prix is annoying.

The roads between circuits are not so great a concept that they had to force it on every mode. Especially since a lot of them are very same-y, with only a couple rather cool areas. I was not a big fan of linear tracks that have appeared since 7, but 2 "laps" of random highway for only 1 lap on the actual circuit is worse.

For that reason and a couple others, I still think 8 is the better game.

[–] catalyst@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Agreed. I’m pretty much completely over World at this point and only play if my kid asks me to. I think it’s technically impressive and gorgeous to look at, but the tracks are so utterly boring I have little motivation to fire it up.

I’m still salty about the lack of local multiplayer free roam too, but that’s another issue entirely.

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I hadn't even thought of local coop free roam, but yeah, that would be fun too.

What I had thought though was why the hell don't we meet random online people messing around, in that mode that's basically just about messing around? Anything to make it feel less empty and boring.

I mean come on, they did random online coop in the latest actual main Mario game!

Burnout Paradise did it like a decade ago

Edit went and checked, 2008... 17 years 😐

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 2 points 11 hours ago

I am more familiar with Forza Horizon, which is my own comparison point, but, yeah. It's like they missed why those were fun.

Also, those button missions. They're slow to set up, they interrupt the flow of driving, they're mostly easy enough you can still beat them while messing up completely and they don't incentivize breaking records.

Compare that to speed traps and danger signs in Horizon. You see them, you speed through them, you do stupid shit. No pause, no slow as hell camera move showing you the obvious thing you're supposed to do. It's all organic.

[–] catalyst@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Yes! They really under utilized free roam, especially when you look at how big a deal they made out of it in the reveal trailer.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have only played one grand prix (and that too locally), so I can't say if World or 8 is better, but DK Spaceport is probably one of the most interesting track I have played.

I have only played it once though, so am not sure if it was the nostalgia hit or if the track is actually good but its still pretty unique.

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I agree this one is great. But there's another problem with World : it's one of the 3 tracks or so that are actually new. Almost everything else is an old track they remastered a bit. It's not badly done, but it feels stale.

Base game 8 already had a lot of fully new, very good tracks. And 8's DLC had some of the best ever, including a few cool crossover circuits.

Even World's music feels like they went exclusively for nostalgia. There is a lot of it, but every piece of music except this episode's main theme is a remix of a previous Mario Kart or Mario game.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Oh, I have only played MK 8 before this, and haven't played World much, so haven't noticed anything yet, but that doesn't sound great for long time players. Hope they add more tracks, but I am not sure how common DLC tracks in MK are.

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Until then it wasn't a thing, but 8 is a precedent for new DLC tracks. The original had a great DLC with 4 extra cups of new circuits. Those are included in the Switch version. There is also the later pass that is made of recycled Mario Kart Tour content, but except maybe a couple, those are rather forgettable and disappointing.

I am really not sure whether we can expect new tracks in World though. If they want them to work the same as the rest of the game, it would basically mean also designing a new landmass around them. It's not impossible, but I assume it must be a lot of work.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

Yeah, an island or something, maybe 5-6 years from now.

[–] Tim_Bisley@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

3 lap racing local co-op mode to unlock tracks and bonus content was the bread and butter for me. So few games have a co-op campaign. I also enjoyed local battle modes as well. They never updated battle mode once in MK8.

Nintendo Stays Silent

Why would they say anything? We knew it would be a shitshow and people still bought it.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We knew it would be a shitshow

We who? And how did you know?

[–] 6nk06@sh.itjust.works -1 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Still underpowered, same bad controllers, you dont own your games anymore, way too expensive, no games. You dont need to be a psychic to see that it was not an improvement.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

I'm hyped for the future though. I bet there will be some cool Zelda and Mario games coming up. Can't wait.

And the old games run like butter. 🤩 Especially the Zelda upgrades. Holy. Great stuff.

[–] qwestjest78@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Nintendo must just hate consumers at this point. Why else would they do all this b.s.

Nintendo makes things for a very specific market and any spillover internationally is just a bonus. To be fair, that has worked out for them for decades now.

The shit icing on the shit cake for early Switch 2 adopters.
