Trump on Sunday pushed the Washington Commanders NFL team to return to its previous name, which was scrapped five years ago because it included a word that many view as a slur against Native Americans.

The president also threatened to block a complicated deal for the Commanders to return to a stadium in Washington, D.C., unless they return to the name "Washington Redskins."

"The Washington "Whatever's" should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this," Mr. Trump wrote.

Party of small government, huh?

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago

Party of literal traitors.

[–] buttnugget@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

Only for the parts that don’t help rich people.

[–] IamSparticles@lemmy.zip 25 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

This seems really important and not like a petty attempt at distraction at all.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 24 points 6 days ago

Epstein list

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 16 points 6 days ago (1 children)

He releases the Epstein Files, unredacted, and maybe they Washington Commanders will change their name back.

In fact, until he does, I vote they change their name to the Washington Epsteins!

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 6 days ago

Even better, call them the Trump Epsteins.

[–] Saledovil@sh.itjust.works 11 points 6 days ago

Even better name would be the Washington Epstein List.

[–] Lucelu2@lemmy.zip 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

He is such an idiot. As President of the US, don't we think he has more important issues to be concerned with? Like, does he have any focus/power of concentration or filter? WTAF. Why do we have this senile dumbass in charge????

[–] Mortoc@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

He very much does not want us to worry about the more important issues. This is his playbook, ignore the noise.

[–] Sgt_choke_n_stroke@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago

This is a distraction from the epstein files.... its not working

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

He already killed one football league by trying to force his will on it.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It's funny because America was likely to have year round professional football until Trump killed that league. It was already in the works to have that other league pick up where the NFL season left off.

Trump literally killed year round football.

Because everything he touches turns to shit. Including our country.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago

It's almost impressive that someone can be so incompetent as to fail selling football to Americans, and can bankrupt casinos.

Those are both licenses to print money and the guy fucks up even that.

[–] Goretantath@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

Washington Original Americans, just to spite him.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 6 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Professional sports is just a way for wealthy whites to own slaves, and trade them between each other like trading cards. I don't care about the squabbles among Sociopathic Oligarchs about their precious sports teams, until it comes to using tax money to build their temples. Then I object strenuously.

If they want a new stadium, they can buy the land and build it, using their own money. Not one penny of taxpayer money should ever be spent on professional sports. Let the owners pay for everything, they can well afford it. Taxpayers should not be subsidizing the dick-measuring contests of billionaires.

[–] BananaIsABerry@lemmy.zip 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Sportsball millionaires are slaves is a take I never expected.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 6 days ago

And yet, those team owners can literally SELL them to each other. Imagine how smug those owners are, knowing they literally own their millionaire athletes. Those athletes are nothing more than birds in gilded cages. The beauty of their cage doesn't replace their freedom.

[–] theherk@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I agree about tax funded stadiums, but slavery…? Come on. I’m sure slaves would definitely see playing a sport for notoriety and millions of dollars as basically the same as indentured servitude.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today -1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Imagine you are an athlete possessing the skills to do something at an incredibly high level, and you can be compensated obscenely for it. However, in order to capitalize on this incredible talent, you have to sign a contract, and surrender your entire career and life to a racist white Sociopathic Oligarchs who is absolutely obsessed with money. But the money is unbelievable, so you do it.

Now you have a family, they love their home, their schools, their friends, their city. Then one day, you are told that you have been SOLD to a different racist white Sociopathic Oligarch in another part of the country, and you have to go, or you will be in breach of your contract, and you will lose everything.

Have fun telling your family that some stranger to them has decided to uproot their entire lives, and send them to a city they have no interest in, and may even hate, AND THEY HAVE NO CHOICE.

You are OWNED by a wealthy white man, and he can sell you to another wealthy white man without bothering to consult you at all. If that's not slavery, then what is it?

[–] theherk@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Pretty simple. When you don’t have a choice in the terms of your agreement. Then, in addition, it is legal to beat the shit out of you for any reason, and in some cases kill a person under such conditions. All protected by law, in many cases with no contract termination. And throughout the remainder of your life, you’ll work tirelessly and thanklessly; all while owning no property or possessing any rights your own.

If you think your analogy holds up, fine. I just think it is hyperbole of the highest order.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today -1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

There are lots of different types of slavery, some like you described, but even during the American slave era, there were differences between slaves. Not all were consigned to work in the fields to their deaths. Many were house slaves, and lived moderately easier lives. Some slaves were allowed to work personal jobs off the plantation, and keep the money, some were able to travel within their jobs, and some could even eventually purchase their freedom. Others were forced into the sugar cane fields in Louisiana or the Caribbean, and driven to work until their deaths, usually within a few brutal years. That's a wide spectrum of experience among slaves.

Obviously, the modern day athlete is not a perfect equivalent, but they do lose much of their autonomy when they sign a contract. At that point, their lives, and their families,' are in the hands of a money-obsessed Sociopathic Oligarch, who sees the athletes he OWNS as his personal property.

The system resembles slavery more than it doesn't.

[–] theherk@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

It really doesn’t. They are not owned. They accept contracts of their own volition and are represented by unions. Are slaves represented by unions? This is just silly.

[–] Mangoholic@lemmy.ml 5 points 6 days ago

What about the rich pedo circle tho?

[–] Nusm@peachpie.theatl.social 3 points 6 days ago
[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 days ago

Change it to the Washington Fake Tan and Hair Plugs, just to piss him off more.

Also, don’t forget about those Epstein files.

[–] OrteilGenou@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

This is an easy one, say they will change the name to the Washington Commanders-in-Chief and say it was inspired by Trump's leadership.

Get stadium

Don't actually change name

[–] burgerpocalyse@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

are we still talking about the washington commanders?

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 1 points 6 days ago

Sports insiders said we could have avoided the 2016 election if NFL owners just let him buy the Bills.

Sounds like good reason to wait for the despot to die or whatever.

FWIW, billionaires run the NFL, they should pay for their own fucking stadia.

[–] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 days ago

They are also non profit. Hahahahahahaha

He is desperate for any news story that will stop the Epstein news.

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Gosh, why are people falling for this copium? Conservative outrage about Epstein will end up being a nothingburger, not changing the minds of anyone on the right. They never actually cared about "grooming," and never will. The evidence of this is old and stale, so don't think for a second that the rate of people waking up to conservative lies will change from this. The economy is what will change minds, not the indisputable fact that pedophilia is acceptable on the right.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Conservatives voted for a "man" that was already a convicted felon and adjudicated rapist and had committed treason by instigating an insurrection and attempting to overturn an election going into the 2024 election.

You are right. Conservatives absolutely are not going to draw the line at pedophilia.

[–] Lifecoach5000@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

It also still needs to be hammered away into the minds of everyone regardless, no matter which side of the aisle you’re on.
