That the way the daily lives of themselves and everyone in their society has so many negative effects. I get they don't have a choice. You work were you can and live where you can afford and manage what you can based on the resources you have available. I just wish the average person would hate it more and try to disconnect from it as much as they can and realize its bad in all the ways they don't if they can't. Drive less, eat less meat, use less proprietary things, eat less processed foods, consume less, simplify, enjoy simple things.

We’re standing on an unthinkably thin layer of viable grime coating a very small rock. We should all be constantly aware of how delicate this situation is and act accordingly, both in terms of how we treat each other and the shit we do to the rock.

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

Seconded. If the Earth were the size of a globe on your desk, he entire biosphere would be thinner than a piece of paper. We have filled the whole thing with our waste and toxins and we are destroying the very systems that we rely on to produce our food and air. If we do not start paying attention and taking steps, I sincerely believe that there will be a society ending global crisis in the next 2-3 decades.

Driving like a maniac saves you a negligible amount of time but puts others in disproportionate danger.

[–] BlameThePeacock@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yup, I stopped worrying about extra lane changes and pushing the speed limit when I realized that it was literally saving me 1-2 minutes at best. Not worth the risk or the hassle.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Similar but really it was the difference between driving being stressful and relaxing. I used to be so angry every time someone did something wrong but now I leave them extra space knowing humans mess up all the time and I’m leaving space so it won’t affect me

That while they judge themselves by their best intentions, they invariably, and subconsciously judge others by their actions.

Once you realise most people are just trying to get through the day and most people aren't trying to make things worse for others, it's easier to forgive perceived slights, and that will make your own day better, and make you less likely to subconsciously slight someone else.

Damn. That's deep.

Yeah, I was gonna say something about how politicians lie or how the media manipulates people. You were more succinct.

[–] lgsp@feddit.it 31 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Cars.

They are everywhere, they take for themselves the majority of public space in urban areas and they are incredibly dangerous, noisy, expensive. Yet majority of people barely notice them

I wish people would realize how their bad behavior, how their greed, hurts other people.

[–] solsangraal@piefed.zip 6 points 1 week ago

the thing is, they DO realize it. what a lot of people don't realize is that people like that literally enjoy causing suffering in others. especially "other" others. telling these people that they're hurting you doesn't make them feel bad, it makes them feel GOOD

why? cycle of abuse? brainwashing? lack of education? most likely, all the above.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 28 points 1 week ago (2 children)

That they're never going to watch the video they're taking on their cell phone at a sporting event, or concert, or political event, or whatever.

And just live in the moment instead.

[–] MyDarkestTimeline01@ani.social 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

My family gets upset about that. I nuked my socials back on January 1st 2020. I rarely take any photos. "We want to see the memories!". Well, I'm too busy making them to remember to record them

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

When I go to an event I give myself 2-3 pictures and then turn my phone off. I do generally end up printing them physically and keeping them.

The natural world. Watch some birds or pay attention to the sounds of insects. See how many shades of green you can pick out from the leaves in the trees. Count the seconds between a flash of lightning and the subsequent thunder. Observe a lunar eclipse.

You'll realize this place is kind of neat if you take some time to appreciate it.

I wish people noticed how much fucking space they take up.

All the fucking time I go to the shops or something and some oblivious dolt just stops walking, usually right in the middle of a fucking choke point.

I wish people would treat walking like they should treat driving; look around. Don't stop in the middle of a highway. If you need to stop, pull over. If you're walking slow, use the slow lane.

We need pedestrian traffic rules because this shit evidently is not intuitive to a lot of people.

[–] johnyreeferseed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I clean windows and the amount of people that see me cleaning a door and proceed to squeeze through the door I'm actively cleaning while there is another door literally next to it drives me nuts. They just see an open door and have to go through it like moths to a flame. I hate how oblivious people are in public.

[–] blackstrat@lemmy.fwgx.uk 7 points 1 week ago

Have you tried switching to Linux?

[–] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago

The amount of people that arent aware of their space around them I have to drive around on a primarily bike lane on my commute is too high.

People rarely notice anything above their eyeline. It has to be directly in front of them or slightly down to be noticed.

Look UP people! There's a whole other world there.

The high pitch noises from so many electronic items. Just as an example HP printers have a high pitch whine from their power supplies. I literally can’t be in the room with them. If more noticed less people would buy the garbage.

[–] jewbacca117@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

CRTs used to drive me nuts. No matter where I was in the house, I could always tell if someone was watching TV

I don’t think this is a situation of noticing or not noticing, I’m pretty sure most folks over a certain age literally cannot hear those frequencies. Then there’s the “lucky” ones of us that can still hear every little whine 🙃

I'm Belgian. I'm working with and for muncipalities and the regional government for years now and people trend to think public servants are lady and stubborn.

I see a lot of enthousiastic, driven, hard working public servants everyday. They often are mangled between political pressure and civilian pressure. There are rotten apples in the basket, for sure, but tge vast majority of public servants work hard en mean well.

[–] Waldelfe@feddit.org 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

German here, I've worked with several areas of our municipalities in the past and can only agree. A lot of public servants are overworked and really try to do a good job. Many work insane ours and you'd actually need at least three people for the job instead of one.

Notice your default behaviors and take a moment to consider whether they serve you. They might, they might not. You may want to change them, you may not. Just be intentional about how you conduct yourself.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

How they are being manipulated by so many things; advertisements, the media, influencers, social media posts, the entertainment industry. The biases aren't all bad but they definitely exist.

That the collapse is incoming and ignoring that fact is exacerbating it.

[–] MyDarkestTimeline01@ani.social 10 points 1 week ago (7 children)

That no man is an island. And even the things you do "staying in your lane" affect those around you.

I'd also love for people to remember that breaking social contracts used to lead to duels and that's why you saw a dip in violence and breeches. But we stopped doing that and now violence and breeches of social contracts are happening more often.

And lastly I'd like all the people complaining about the biosphere in this thread to remember that they're Debbie Downers and that's why no one invites them to parties.

I'm joking about the last one. I agree with them, I just think the solution is getting off this planet as quickly as possible Oregon Trail style.

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

That they are not alone. Everyone is having a day just like themselves so being considerate and respectful goes a long way to making it work for everyone.

There are also people that are not like you so you might not understand the behavior of everyone but it could be that that person is struggling the same way you are (when you are) but it might look different.

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 5 points 1 week ago

Nature. Look around you. Like, seriously, stop what you are doing, and look around you for three, full minutes. You'll start to notice new things. Bugs, plants, views, animals. There's a lot going on, even if you just look at a 1x1 in square of grass up close. It's pretty cool.

Even in human areas, just spending an hour in a space while not being on your phone is kinda cool. I'd be doing something like weeding a local bike path and start to notice way more people than I ever thought used it. It's mostly asphalt, but even here, the plants are interesting, and you start to meet people in your community that do the same work.

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That society can function with us working less than 16hrs/week and we could have a UBI and time to enjoy being alive instead of apathetically accepting global feudalism
